RE: Stanford Women’s Golf 2023-24 - Spiny_Norman - 09-03-2023

Congratulations to Megha Ganne on her first collegiate win! Stanford also won in this play 6, count 5 format.

Final team result
Stanford -22
Arkansas -14
Texas A&M -10

Individual results
1. Ganne -15
T6. Sampedro Martin -5 (freshman in her first collegiate tournament)
12. Xu -2
T19. Englemann +1
T22. Heck +3
T28. Sturdza +6

It's nice to see Stanford on top. But fall golf does not generally foretell spring success. I think we learned what we already know - that (if healthy) Stanford can compete with the best in the country and contend for the NC next May.

RE: Stanford Women’s Golf 2023-24 - Spiny_Norman - 09-29-2023

The men's and women's golf teams paired up to face Cal in the Big Match at Menlo CC yesterday. Cal won 4-3. It all came down to the final match with each school's #1 men's and women's players against each other. Rachel Heck and Karl Vilips lost to their Cal counterparts 2 and 1, although it did produce quite a highlight. With the team 3 down with 3 to play and Cal already in close for a birdie 2, Vilips made a hole in one to win the 16th hole. Alas, it just postponed the final result.

Stanford now gets ready for the prestigious Stephens Cup in Dallas the week after next.

Winflop - any idea what's going on with Brooke Seay? She did not play in the match yesterday and did not appear to have been on the recent team Scotland trip. Injury?

RE: Stanford Women’s Golf 2023-24 - Spiny_Norman - 10-09-2023

Both the men and women golfers are competing in the limited field Stephens Cup this week in Dallas. This is a prestigious event that will be televised on The Golf Channel today, tomorrow and Wednesday. Broadcast today starts at 2 pm pacific.

The format is 54 holes of stroke play (36 today, 18 tomorrow), followed by match play for the top 4 teams on Wednesday.

Stanford men are playing without Michael Thorbjornsen who is still recovering from a stress fracture in his back. As the team is playing the back 9 of round 1, they are 1 shot behind LSU. Frosh Ethan Gao and Kush Arora are leading the team at -4 each.

Stanford women are playing without Rachel Heck and Brooke Seay. They also are playing the back 9 of round 1 and are in 3rd place behind Texas A&M and South Carolina. Kelly Xu is leading the field at -5.

Live stats here - https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&&lb=&x=0.555131510656&tid=28413

Broadcast schedule on Golf Channel will be 1 pm pacific tomorrow and 12:30 pm on Wednesday.

RE: Stanford Women’s Golf 2023-24 - Spiny_Norman - 10-11-2023

Stanford had the lead on the back 9 of the final round of the stroke play part of the tournament but stumbled at the end. Ganne made triple bogey on the 18th and frosh Martin Sampedro finished bogey-bogey. Across all 5 players, the team only made 2 birdies on the back 9 of the final round. I guess the putts stopped falling.

Stanford finished 3rd in stroke play and is playing South Carolina today in match play for 3rd place overall.

I learned from the tv broadcast why Rachel Heck did not play. She got beat by her teammates in qualifying! I don't know if that means Heck is struggling. Amazing that a team with a senior All American and a grad student All American on the sidelines is still nationally competitive. I hope that Heck and Seay can return to their high level of play in the spring. The team needs their leadership.

RE: Stanford Women’s Golf 2023-24 - oldalum - 10-11-2023

We're currently leading So Carolina 2-1 (completed matches) with remaining players Ganne up 1 and playing 18, and Martin Sampedro up 1 and playing 17.
______________________

Martin Sampedro just clinched the victory with a birdie win on 17, finishing 2 and 1! And Ganne wins 1 up. Final team score 4-1 with Englemann our only loser.

Texas is leading Wake Forest in the championship match early, 3-1-1

Playing for 3rd place in a fall tournament is relatively low stakes, especially compared to playing for an NCAA championship. But look who Coach Walker put in the critical anchor position - a true freshman. And Martin Sampedro delivered.

This team still needs to coalesce around a reliable #1 player.  We'll see what happens with the final 2 fall events - the Stanford Invitational next weekend and the East Lake Cup the week after.

I know it is early season, but we aren't looking all that good. Down something like 12 strokes to the leaders after round 1.  Need to step it up. We may miss Rose more than we think

RE: Stanford Women’s Golf 2023-24 - Spiny_Norman - 10-21-2023

Stanford now is being led by a frosh and 2 sophomores. Playing #1 this week is frosh Paula Martin Sampedro. Playing #2 is soph Kelly Xu. Playing #3 is soph Megha Ganne.

Bringing up the last 2 spots are seniors Sadie Englemann and Rachel Heck. One might expect the seniors to lead, particularly Heck. But she has struggled to reclaim the form she had as a frosh. I think we are seeing a team in transition with players in different roles than they might have expected. Martin Sampedro has been the best player on the team so far this fall and who saw that coming?

But fall golf is not the same as spring golf. We'll see what happens once we get to February and March. It might be the case that Heck (former NCAA champ) is fighting for the 5th spot on the team.

I think it is asking a lot of Freshmen and Sophomores to carry the team into February and March.  For several years we have had serious leadership from the upperclassmen, now we are asking a first or second year player to carry the Flag.  A bit too much I think.  I expected  Megha to step up this year, and she still might, but it is looking less likely.  Hard to say what has happened with Rachel, but she is clearly not the player she once was.  I think Stanford has opened her eyes to lots of other things in life and I do not think golf is as important to her as it once was. Plus who knows how much the injury hurt her game.
I am not optimistic about either the women's or men's prospects this year. FWLTIW

RE: Stanford Women’s Golf 2023-24 - Spiny_Norman - 10-29-2023

Stanford's women's golf team plays its final fall tournament this week in Atlanta at the limited field East Lake Cup. Only 4 teams compete - the 4 semifinalists from last spring's NCAA tournament - Stanford, Wake Forest, USC, Texas A&M. The format consists of 18 holes of stroke play on Monday followed by match play on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Stanford's lineup will be Xu, Martin Sampedro, Ganne, Englemann, Sturdza. Rachel Heck is not available. She is playing for the US in the Pan American Games in Chile this week.

The tournament is broadcast on the Golf Channel starting at 12 noon pacific on Monday.

Leaderboard - https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=28488

After this tournament, the team will be off for the next 3 1/2 months. Back in action in mid-February.

RE: Stanford Women’s Golf 2023-24 - 76lsjumb - 10-30-2023

Sadie Engleman takes first place in stroke play at the East Lake Cup, just as everyone predicted…

Stanford also takes team first. Now, on to match play.

Go Card!

Englemann had been struggling with her game the past 2 weeks, but found her form today especially on holes 10-12 when she made 3 straight birdies to take command. She will be bringing some hardware home.

Match play in the semifinals on Tuesday will be Stanford vs. Texas A&M and Wake Forest vs. USC. Stanford off beginning at 9:30 pacific. I was hoping that Stanford frosh Paula Martin Sampedro from Spain would be matched against grad student Blanca Fernandez Garcia-Poggio from Spain. But that is not how the coaches chose the match ups. Coach Walker is playing Martin Sampedro in the 5th or anchor position. That's a lot of confidence in a true frosh.

Match status will be available here - https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=match&tid=28491&rid=1

Golf Channel coverage begins at 12 pm pacific.

RE: Stanford Women’s Golf 2023-24 - Lorcan - 10-31-2023

Wow. It looks like Ganne just won in 22 holes to knock of Texas A&M 3-2. Englemann and Martin Sampedro also won their matches. We'll play Wake in the championship match which will be a fantastic early season test after Wake held off USC.

I was beginning to wonder if Ganne had a problem with match play. She lost both matches at the NCAAs in May. And she was behind almost all day in her match today against Zoe Slaughter. Until she won on the 22nd hole, Ganne only led for a single hole in this match. Slaughter appeared to be rock solid. After a birdie on 16, she was 2 up with 2 to play. But she missed a 4-5 footer for par on 17 that would have won the match. Ganne had to get up and down from a downhill lie in the back bunker just to keep going. But she hit a great shot, then made the putt. Slaughter had to concede 18 after hitting multiple balls in the water. On to extra holes.

In extra holes, Ganne was all over the place. In 4 holes, I think she was on the green in regulation once. But she made clutch putts from 4-6 feet on every hole to halve. That takes steely nerves. Slaughter's stroke failed her again when she 3 putted from 20 feet on the 22nd to hand the match to Ganne.

Stanford now has a chance to close the fall season on a high note against the defending national champs. I would not call this a 2024 NCAA championship preview because I hope that Rachel Heck and Brooke Seay will be back in the spring. But at this point, who knows if Seay will play at all this year. And Heck has not played well. She failed to break 70 in the fall, broke par once in 6 rounds, and had a scoring average 2.5 strokes above her career average. She may not be in the top 5 if that continues.

Golf Channel coverage starts tomorrow at 12 noon pacific.
