Another "shocking" lack of commentary - JohnR34231 - 10-26-2023

No comments on the Washington football game coming in two days.
Anyone think we have a chance?
Well, they typically don't play well in Palo Alto (only one victory since 2007).
If they play like they did against Arizona State maybe we have a shot.
Problem is, they probably won't.

we'll be at the game, looking forward to tailgating while it is still light out.

left the UCLA game at halftime

hopefully this week we get to eat some TD cookies while we're in the stadium

and remember 1982, we beat a highly ranked (I vaguely recall #1) UW team!!!

Best # 1 Washington with Vincent White the star

80's were a strange time. We would beat teams like Ohio State, Oklahoma and #1 Washington and lose to teams like San Jose State.

I walked out of that Washington game with mixed emotions. Of course I was happy for the victory, but I said to myself "Why can't we play that way more often?"

If I recall correctly, Stanford forced 5 Washington turnovers in that game in 1982. It would sure help a lot if UW would be as generous on Saturday.

Stanford's defense has not forced a single fumble all year so far this season. And has only intercepted 3 passes - 2 vs. Sac State and the one critical INT in OT vs. Colorado.

Jack Curtice once said of the Stanford team at that time "We may not be big but we're slow."  A similar saying about the current defense might be "We may not be talented but we are poorly coached."  I do not recall ever seeing so many players out of position as we had at UCLA except at a high school game.

I also vaguely recall that going into the game people were asking some question that had a binary answer and giving you either a purple or gold ribbon to put on your arm to show how you voted, people figured out pretty quickly this was an attempted UW prank to get their colors all over the stadium....

Stanford football is 8-23 since the 2020 season.  Forgive those of us who no longer comment and find the games unwatchable.  I was here for the OT threads.

Lotsa fun that day in '82, a rainy overcast Halloween-season-Saturday afternoon. You could see the lackadaisical body language of the bigger, faster Huskies, however. They just weren't excited about this one, despite their lofty ranking (they went on to win the Aloha Bowl after a 9-2 regular season). Came in flat and sleep-walked. To the chagrin of their fans and the delight of the Cardisans. Attendance: 55,213--in lousy weather! It would be Stanford's 5th and final win that year, finishing 5-6. Four straight losses after spaying the Dawgs.  A bitter season, even having won in Columbus. I was there and naively looked forward to a stellar year. Great roadie, however. Met Keith Jackson, who wore brown/white saddle shoes.

That's 12-31 since 2019. Last winning season:2018. And counting.

Another evening of unwatchable carnage? Penix, the Duck slayer, should have a pretty big night to fluff-up his H-man campaign.
As for me, this season cannot come to an end fast enough. Oy.

Plus they'll be angrier than a hornet's nest (too soon after the Sac State game?) after the near-miss against an improving Arizona.

Or 2020. 4-2

Since then, 4-19 in P12 play. That's a percentage of 0.174. Stanford is looking at a 3rd consecutive last or next to last finish in the conference. There is no good way to spin the product.

I think Stanford looks improved this week. My sense is that we actually match up better with UW.

It’s clear we need to come out with more urgency and I think that’ll be the emphasis Saturday. Start fast and gain confidence.

Unfortunately, I won’t be attending in person but I’ll be there in spirit and watching on tv!

I hope you’re right
I’m afraid they may be stuck on the strategy of the Angel Field Ancients: “Start off slow, then taper off”

I hope George is OK. He usually sets up the prediction thread and that is where the pregame commentary usually is.

Vince White and I worked a Huey Lewis concert together once. Really good guy.

Looks like we'll have dumb alternate uniforms.
