WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - 81alum - 10-31-2023

Preview:

Dominican University, founded 1890, is in reality a small liberal arts college of 1800 or so students in San Rafael.  Their athletics operate in Division II,  in the Pacific West Conference.  They are the Penguins.  After they play us they go on to play Menlo in another exhibition.

Last year, Dominican was 18-11.  Their roster contains a bevy of short guards, but they do have a 6'4" player and a couple of others over 6', so they are not devoid of size.  Their best returning player is 5'11" Keyonee Neal, a sophomore guard who averaged 13 points, mostly from inside the arc.  Neal is from Rohnert Park.  6'0" forward junior Olga Faasola, from East Palo Alto, was their leading rebounder a year ago, so I expect there will be some local fans at Maples cheering her on.

Of course, in an exhibition, the opposition is not nearly as interesting as seeing Tara's decisions about our own team.  Who starts, who plays, what roles do our players have this year?  The team scrimmage was sloppy at times--but the male practice players were pretty good and disruptive.  I doubt Dominican will be better than those male practice players, so we may have a chance to see how the team behaves under much easier conditions.

There are some unanswered questions from the team scrimmage I want to answer.  In particular, I want to see how Ogden plays.  I didn't feel as if I got a good look at her during the scrimmage.  I'm also interested to see if Clardy plays some point and splits that duty with Lepolo.

And I want to see more crisp passing and movement without the ball on offense.

I'll put this nore here. Arizona has a roster of 11 Stanford 12. Arizona has one out for the year. Tonight they play an exhibition with 4 more out thus 6 players.

I sure hope Tara sees the wishom of 13-14 and gets 2 more 2024 commits.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - 81alum - 11-01-2023

Has there been any notice about chalk talks this year?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - stopandpop - 11-01-2023

Great posts!  But can we move these conversations to WBB 2023-2024 thread?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - Lorcan - 11-01-2023

I think this is separate from the 2023-2024 thread as it's an actual game - so they deserve their own thread. I'll be watching the game tonight, hopefully.

It has been my habit to start a new WBB thread for each game, for about the last 10 years.  Having a single merged thread is fine for general discussion.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - BobK - 11-01-2023

The new treads are excellent. Don’t change 81

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - 81alum - 11-01-2023

Ogden has a really sweet three point shot.  She made several during shoot around that hit nothing but net, from a foot or two outside the arc, and moving left or right to receive the pass first.  Hope that shows up in games.

Ogden has now made 4 or 5 mid range jumpers in a row from about 8 feet that hit nothing but net.  She is an awesome shooter in practice.  We will see....

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - 81alum - 11-01-2023

Moment of silence for Bob Knight.  Then the team stayed on the floor for the national anthem for the first time in years.

Elena srarting, aling with usual suspects

All three frosh enter game with 4 min to go in first. Score is 22-4

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - CompSci87 - 11-01-2023

Nice 22-4 start. All 3 freshmen come in at 4:00 in the first quarter.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - Card10Fan - 11-01-2023

What an offensive clinic in the first quarter. We look ready to go!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - 81alum - 11-01-2023

Just an exhibition, but 40 points in a quarter is a good thing.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - CompSci87 - 11-01-2023

40-10 after one. Dominican broke double figures when Stavi blocked a 3-pointer and the carom happened to go to an open Dominican player right under the basket, who hit a layup for 2.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - WBB fan - 11-01-2023

End of first, score 40-10. Everyone has played, including Green and Papdaki. Among frosh, Nunu looks really good, Clardy also strong. Ogden hasn't done much to impress me so far. Free throws perfect

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - 81alum - 11-01-2023

And looks like Bosgana is our 5th starter.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - BobK - 11-01-2023

Kiki with a double double in the first half

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - CompSci87 - 11-01-2023

78-18 at the half.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Dominican (exhibition) - WBB fan - 11-01-2023

An exhibition game against a badly overmatched opponent, but still.  Looking really good, everyone. Love Kiki aggressive play. And perfect at free throws line. Going after the ball, manufacturing steals.
