MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - Mick - 11-12-2023

Tuesday night, Stanford (2-0) takes on Santa Clara (2-0) at 6 p.m. at Maples. I'll see you out there

SCU is shooting 50.4% from the field, just 30.4% from 3 pt. range, just 56.1% from FT line. Outrebounded opponents 46 rpg vs. 29 rpg.; more assists per game, 18 vs. 10. Turning the ball over way too much at 16.5 T/Os per game vs. 14. 5 blocks per game. Basically, they're big and uncoordinated. I anticipate a Stanford victory. Stanford has won four of the last seven, though lost to SCU in their last meeting, 88-72 on 11/12/21. SCU only has two of the ten players back from that game.

Santa Clara starts four transfers, and six of their top seven players are transfers. Maybe they all think they'll be NBA first round selections like Podziemski (2023) and Jalen Williams (2022). Starters include:
- PG Jalen Benjamin (5'11") transfer from Mt. St. Mary's, 5th year senior, 2nd team all-NEC, also played with UAB.
- SG Carlos Marshall (6'6") is scoring 21 ppg, was 2x All-Ohio Valley Conference at Tennessee State.
- Forward Adama-Alpha Bal (6'7") is on French national team, third leading scorer, transferred from Arizona, shot 39% from 3 pt range.
- Johnny O'Neil (6'10" forward), transfer from American, started 60 of 70 games there.
- Center is soph Christophe Tilly (7'0") from Germany.

Key backups are 7'1" Francisco Caffaro on Argentine U19 team, he's a 5th year senior who played at Virginia for four years. He's leading rebounder, 2nd leading scorer. Tyree Bryan (6'5" guard) transfer from Charleston Southern had started 28 of 29 games in his only season there.

SCU has victories over Utah State and St. Francis of PA. Utah State is currently ranked #109 on teamrankings.com while SCU is #116. Go figure. Stanford is #144 after the wins over Northridge State and Sacramento State.

Stanford strong from the line (80% on 12 FTAspg), 49.6% shooting, 36.2% from 3pt range, slight rebounding disadvantage (37 rpg vs. 41.5), lots of assists at 20 apg, few turnover (7 topg vs. 13 topg), 6.5 blocks per game and 7.5 steals per game. Excellent defense.

I think Stanford stymies SCU on defense and scores well. My guess is around 77-68, Stanford. SCU is likely to outrebound Stanford, but Stanford will have the advantage in all the other categories.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - AlbanyCardinal - 11-12-2023

Thanks, Mick, for the breakdown. I've had this game circled since the schedule came out. Seems to me this is the kind of game Stanford needs to win if they have any hopes of going to the Dance. Winning on Tuesday night doesn't guarantee a ticket obviously, but losing tells me this team has no chance (once again). I'm so far pleased to see TOs down -- that's uncharacteristic of Haase's teams -- hopefully that trend continues as the season progresses.

I think it helps when we have probably the best point guard we have had since Haase took over.  Gealer isn't bad either.  Both seem to know where their fellow players are supposed to be and get them the ball.  The bigs know if they run the floor hard they will get the ball.  Guys always play a bit better when they know their pg is always looking for them and will pass the ball if they are open.  Shoot 40 percent from 3, 80 percent from the FT line and keep TO's in single digits and playing decent defense is a decent recipe for winning games.  I think the word Team means something to this years guys, some past years, not so much.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - AlbanyCardinal - 11-12-2023

Yep, agreed. Bynum-Gealer is a pretty strong 1-2 pg punch for Stanford. I'm surprised that Gealer is as productive as he's shown.

In case anyone needs a refresher on Bynum like I did.

Getting Bynum was a great find. Gealer was a star in a very, very small school in SoCal.  I am sure the size of his school and size of his league made his 3 star rating actually a great achievement.  He was actually way better than anyone thought.  So far we have shown what low turnover, high assist point guard play can do for a team.  I think Haase has been looking for PG's like this ever since he got to Stanford, guys who put the team first and play that way.  Guys know if they can get open they will get the ball, and we don't see those dribble drives into oblivion that were so much the part of past years. The 3 star PG commitment for next year seems like the same kind of player.  Nice thing is that they can also shoot so they are not one trick ponies. How often are we going to get a PG who is a great distributor, a great shooter and a great defender?  Not very often in my opinion.  So if you get two of those three attributes, which two do you pick?  We have had a number of guys who had only one of those three markers.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - SkiBum80 - 11-13-2023

Yes Bynum has been just what the doctor ordered and Gealer has become a totally reinvented on-fire player compared to last year.
But lest we pause in our effusive draping of gold medals around their necks, this coming test with Santa Clara will be much stiffer and tougher than the prior 2 games.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - PVTree - 11-13-2023

Speaking of transfers, North Carolina starts 2 former trees: Harrison Ingram and Cormac Ryan. Both have started the 2 games they have played and were on the floor for at least 25 minutes each game.

Cormac Ryan? seems like he should be middle aged by now

Bynum is 24 years old. He basically the same age as Ja Morant and Luka Doncic. He's played years more basketball than Gealer and even more still than any incoming frosh. Yes, Bynum has good skills that fit well with Stanford (so far). But he also gives Haase what he has never had - a VERY experienced PG. No substitute for that experience.

Thanks, got my dates mixed up.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - BobK - 11-14-2023

Angel out with an injury. Caryle still out

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - SkiBum80 - 11-14-2023

We came out strong
Very refreshingly nonHaasian
Stojakovic went nuts (good) for ~10 min
But with Bynum & Raynaud resting our 2nd string looked 2nd stringy & SCU pulled back within 2

At the half, both teams w hot shooters
We have more assists & some were things of beauty
But they been crashing the OBoards effectively
This is a nail biter so far

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - PVTree - 11-14-2023

We had a 12 point lead and then substituted at least 3 starters. Broncos made the comeback then.

14 and 22 are their prime scorers so far. E need to feed MR down low. They are having a hard time hosting him.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - SkiBum80 - 11-14-2023

This is by far best opponent so far
It shows
Bynum & Raynaud up for it
SJones has 1 pt at the half?
Gealer not looked as hot
If Stojakovic could keep the brilliance & lose the bad mistakes he’d be all conference

Our guys 2 quick fouls in just the first minute of 2nd half
Ugh

SJones on offense has either been cursed, or needs an optometrist

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - PVTree - 11-14-2023

Again...a close game, leading by 1, and 3 subs come in (Agarwal, Gealer, and Keefe). We quickly go to trailing by 5. We can't have that many bench players at once on the floor.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - SkiBum80 - 11-14-2023

Has SJones ever played this many minutes of a game and had only 1 pt?

Bynum shows experience is so important
SJones shows it doesn’t always mean anything
