WBB: Stanford 79 Albany 35 - 81alum - 11-24-2023

Preview:

Playing its 4th game in 8 days, Stanford takes on Albany at 1pm on Sunday at Maples. The game will be on Pac 12 networks, though which channel I’m not sure. Our team will hardly have a whole day to prepare, given that it needs to return from Las Vegas.

The Albany Great Danes play for the University of Albany, SUNY. Like SJSU, Albany is a former teachers’ college that grew into a full fledged state university, of 16,000 students located in the NY state capital.

The Albany WBB team is a good mid level team. Last year they were 22-12, 14-2 in their conference: America East. They mainly play similar schools (like Maine) but sprinkle in some military academies and Ivies, and once a year they play a major school. Last year it was Ohio State, that beat them 82-57. Albany went to the finals of its league and lost to Vermont by the repulsive score of 38-36. Whew.

This year Albany is 4-1, having beaten teams like Sarah Lawrence 118-27 and Cornell 57-45.

Albany is led in scoring by 6’0” senior guard Kayla Cooper, who is averaging 12 pts but hasn’t made a three.

Fatema Lee, a 5’7” grad student guard also scores nearly 12 ppg and makes over 40% of her threes.

Lily Phillips, a 5’’11” junior guard scores 11 ppg and makes 48% of her threes.

Albany has 3 other key players in its rotation—all grad students—and two of them are 6’1” and 6’2”.

In sum, Albany is a good three point shooting team and its players are very experienced. They don’t have anyone who can match Iriafen or Brink in the paint. Their best hope is to catch us under prepared and emotionally flat, and for them to get hot from three point range. I doubt those things will happen. Nevertheless, rather than repeat the platitudes about "trap games" I hope our freshmen and second stringers come out on fire and have a great game.

Please cheer extra loud for me. Some family stuff will probably keep me from attending games… hopefully, it’s just one or two games. But gotta take one day at a time and count the blessings we have.

The 4 games in 8 days with a trip to and from Vegas right in the middle does make me wonder about having somewhat of a letdown flat game. Hoping we use our depth and the freshman can get plenty of court time

Gonzaga beat Alabama today and plays ranked Louisville tomorrow. If they win tomorrow, they may also be ranked when we head there next weekend. Glad our team has a few days off this week.

Anyway it is 30-14 in the second quarter so I wouldn't complain too much. Not yet anyway.
47-24 at halftime so I can see why there isn't much interest in discussing this game.

Given the overall good game & score I won’t complain much either
Except for this(!)
Our point guards continue to ___ at shooting. So far Lepolo+Clardy+Harriel are 0 for 5.
One recent game this group was 1-11.
This is an Achilles heel that could be exploited by a smart opponent.

I think that's a problem that just ain't going away.
Will we be able to beat the UCLA's of this world with it? Time will tell.

Apparently the refs got bored and decided to make this game about them. Missy goes to the monitor for 3 minutes to alter the shot clock 3 seconds, and now they're calling fouls on us left, right, and center. Still, glad our frosh have gotten a lot of playing time, and each of the three has shown some great promise.

Albany scored 11 points in the entire 2nd half. Our defense got better. The game was low scoring for us because we didn't shoot great from outside but also this is just how Albany plays, tough defense and drain the clock on offense to make it a low number of possessions game. Albany took 56 shots vs the 84 that run and gun Florida State took. Good to see that we can win games both ways.

Just got back from the game. The chalk talk was interesting, a lot of conversation about the Florida State game. A few tidbits:

1) The team got back Saturday morning and immediately practiced. There was not much time to prepare, and the team needed to rest.
2) Albany was the school where Tara played basketball her freshman year. She transferred to Indiana to be part of a bigger basketball program.
3) While Tara was at Albany, for a few months her roommate was Ros Gold-Onwude's mother.
4) Kate said that Duke and Florida State have some of the best guards in the country, and weathering those storms will help prepare us for what is to come.
5) More than one question about the officiating. Kate had this to say "It is a thankless job. They care about basketball. They are nice people." She also answered a question to the effect that they do scout the refs and let the team know in advance if any refs have particular tendencies.
6) Kate is very pleased with the freshmen, and with Iriafen's improvement. But "there is no substitute for experience." She thinks the freshmen will be fully integrated into the system by the end of the year, but we haven't seen their best, yet. As Kate talked about Iriafen, I could not help but think about the subtext around Betts. Some players need time to develop. Most players.

Now, as for the game, it was nice to have the band and a somewhat festive atmosphere. Albany runs a half court offense by design, unlike FSU, so we weren't going to score 100 points. It just slows the game down. My takeaways from the game:

A) Jump is getting her shot back on track, and her emotion showed when she drained those two treys in a row.
B) Brink was brink, although she missed another free throw. We may just have to settle for 90% instead of perfection.
C) Iriafen is wracking up the fouls, too. Second game with 4 fouls for her.
D) Agara is showing some freshman-itus. 2/9 and some shots she forced up in traffic. But nice to see that toughness inside.
E) Ogden is quietly coming into her own.
F) I continue to raise my hopes about Harriel. I remember a player last year mentioning that Harriel was the best three point shooter on the team. I sort of laughed it off, what with Jump et. al. But perhaps she is. She was 2/3 today and both swished all net. She also had 2 assists and 0 turnovers in 10 minutes.
G) What a gorgeous no-look assist by Papadaki to Ogden with two minutes left. Such a pretty play!

Well, the monitor thing made sense. A missed shot apparently hit the rim but the shot clock didn't reset to 20. Barlow stopped play with it at 6 (edit: or less... it was at 2 when the clock operator stopped it). The monitor review was for what to correct it to. The rules wouldn't allow just putting it at 20, so a review was required to get the right time.

But I pretty much agree about lots of ticky tack fouls after that.

Watching some of the broadcast now I learned that UAlbany's #23 is the younger sister of NBA player Kevin Huerter. She went 3/6 on 3-pointers today, but didn't score otherwise.
