Hoping EJ comes back, but, if not, best of luck to him:

Absolutely not on hoping he comes back. We need at least 20 scholarship departures just to stay within roster limits. He doesn’t make the cut.

That said, I think he could be a nice receiving option/what used to be called a third down back type elsewhere. Just doesn’t fit what we need and where we are in the rebuild.

Totally agree. When he first arrived at Stanford, he was considered a 'tweener. Not big enough to be a running back full time and probably going to play in the slot. That changed pretty quickly into being a full-time running back. I always wondered if that was his wish or was it the coaching staff's idea. Anybody know that story? In any case, IMO he isn't a running back and hopefully he can take a last year and establish some credentials as a receiver.

I hope he finds a team that suits his style of running.  He certainly never shined here.

What were Smith's and Patu's recruiting "star" ratings?

I think they typify the situation that eventually led to Coach Shaw leaving.
Quality recruits that did not seem to find their footing and potential as Cards.
One might have hoped they could have had another (in hindsight, one last) chance to shine this year under Coach TT.
But how much shining could they do behind the porous and usually overmatched OLine?
So is kinda hard to say Goodbye under such conditions, but as others have also said, I hope for well wishes playing successfully on a good team elsewhere next year.... (just not one of our opponents in the ACC please!)

Anybody have any info re what lead to Smith's semi repositioning as a receiver in the last game. Many thought he should have been a slot receiver all along. Seemed right to me especially with the dearth of receivers last year. Did he want to stay at rb? Did his dad want him at rb? And, btw, he looked pretty good Sat.

Good on Ari an EJ for graduating.  I'm proud of them.

And right on cue as I respond to the Recruiting 2024 thread, here's the next portal entrant: James Pogorelc.

Pogorelc started the first two games of the season. His announcement says he'll be a grad transfer, so another leaving Stanford with a degree: https://twitter.com/jamespogo33/status/1731758596231422329/photo/1

Sam, how big of a blow is this?

RE: Stanford football transfers - Outgoing/portal entrants - msqueri - 12-04-2023

Not only not a blow but extremely likely to not be Pogorelc’s choice. Our scholarship math is stark. You can basically think about it like this: any upperclassmen who weren’t starters and leave are a gift. Many of them will be told to move on. Just the roster math.

Thanks!  Yes I get the math.   Just want a lot of linemen, and I am not deep enough right now to know exactly who I really want to keep (as if I have a magic wand, LOL).
