He has been at Stanford 28 years, counting his undergrad years. He was Dean of the Econ department before becoming GSB Dean 8 years ago.

Somewhat dubious online sourcing, but if the linked story is true I think he's a football fan (and that Stepfan Taylor is a really nice guy).

"Last week, when we were watching the first UCLA game, Ben announced that he wanted to invite Stepfan Taylor to his birthday party. Naturally we told him that probably Stepfan Taylor would be too busy to come to a kindergarten birthday party, but that Ben could email an invitation."

Sure enough, Taylor got the message and showed up to Ben's party. He played football with the kids and even tried some of the cake.

"It was probably the greatest 6-year-old birthday party ever," Jon Levin told the University's website. "Very cool and I was so impressed with Stepfan's generosity."

Edited to add: A 2014 survey question asked economists whether they agreed with this statement: "If the NCAA let colleges pay athletes with more than scholarships (which currently may cover tuition, books, room and board), then top colleges in men’s basketball and football would pay most athletes substantial sums beyond full scholarships."

Levin was among the 38 percent of economists to strongly agree with the statement. He added: "Schools are not afraid to spend money to win at football & basketball - look at coaching salaries."

Agree, Bob. Don't intend to start a discussion here, but it is baffling that there is such aggressive opposition to a goal of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Cool story about Stepfan Taylor. The linked story has a picture from the party so seems to be true and he's a regular at Stanford football games.

I'm a bit confused. I thought Stanford pursued DEI progress and had achieved substantial progress? An aggressive opposition to DEI goals exists at Stanford?

At a time of rampant antisemitism on campus (see separate thread on Theo Baker's article), hiring a Jewish person as the next president of the university is an important form of DEI.

Econ department has a chair, not a dean.
