Spring Football Showcase -

Was anyone else there? I arrived ten minutes late and stayed for less than an hour. They were scrimmaging (without tackling to the ground) when I arrived, then did position-specific drills for about 45 minutes, and then started scrimmaging again. This did not remotely resemble any kind of real spring game or even any kind of competition. Coach Taylor seems to be very averse to open practices in general.
It's silly to try to report on who looked good in these kinds of drills, but here are some small, casual observations:
- The crowd was extremely small, maybe just a few hundred people of which many were parents. There was a group of around 15 recruits in attendance.
- Injuries included: #21 Scotty Edwards, our presumed starting safety, who was on one crutch; #47 Caleb Ellis (backup CB); and top freshman receiver in the country in 2023, #13 Elic Ayomanor.
- Ayomanor did an interview for TV but was not in pads. It appears that he played through half of last season with pain management for a grade 3 AC joint separation! (per Troy Clardy's podcast) I'm purely speculating that he might have needed surgery or additional rest/therapy for that injury in the end.
- Welcome Elijah Brown, our future QB? He looked good in drills but seemed a little lost in the one series of 11 v. 11 that I was able to watch.
- The most exciting play was a long touchdown on a wheel route from Daniels to Sedrick Irvin. He was wide open and would have scored anyway, but he looked quicker than I expected (which is to say, a lot quicker than our DBs on that play).
- All of the drills and scrimmages featured Daniels first, then Lamson, then Brown/Jackson/Mirer in no discernible order.
- Season ticket prices are down slightly year-over-year, and alcohol continues to be served.

Wasn't there in person, did tune in a bit to KZSU. FWIW, the announcers frequently praised frosh Emmett Mosely, a WR.
Hearing the play-by-play, based on results it certainly sounded like Daniels performed at a higher level than the other QBs.

I was there. Pretty boring which wasn’t a surprise. Loved Irvin’s TD

I watched most of the Pac 12 program with Ted Robinson and Camarillo. Not bad. More than half consisted of interviews with Taylor, Ayomanor and the new BB coach Smith. He said a group of 60 former BB players want to help with bringing the program back with NIL (I think) and increasing fan support. Luck sure sounds like he's going to stay around the area. Frosh receiver Moses and QB Brown were mentioned most by Taylor. I thought Moses was still injured, but guess not.

Andrew Luck gave a very powerful speech to the team the night before. That all the alumni who came before them were watching who was leaving and who was staying. And that that mattered to him.

I thought they would have deep-sixed those cheesy "helmets" by now. Yecchh...
Not a good look and an even worse omen. It's John Candy's winter hat in
Uncle Buck.

I hate 'em too. But, have heard they're only for spring practice, not games in the fall.

Oooops, didn't include Luck among those interviewed. he was really good....a lot more comfortable with a microphone than back when.

We went. No 'show' in the showcase really, other than a bit of scrimmage toward the end. Does it count against their sprint training session limits? On the one-hand, it may be a smart way to sneak in an extra practice, but as a live attendee it would have been nice if they at least had a PA announcer or printed roster for reference. It was mostly just position groups practicing for at least the first 45 minutes or so, then some scrimmaging.
No one stood out to us as the next McCaffery/Elway/Luck, etc. Of the QB's, Daniels looked best to me, and honestly he looked better then last year to me. Tight, fast throwing motion seemed stronger, was pretty accurate and seemed more confident/quick with making decisions. Maybe that's just the comfort of the green vest, I dunno, but he looked better. Brown looked quick, but was off on more passes, had less zip (maybe more touch?) and looked like he needs time to get bigger and stronger. When Elway played as a true freshman, there was a 'holy cow' sense watching him throw -- didn't have that sense about Brown, yet anyway. Lamson was hit and miss -- there were a few moments when I thought 'why isn't this guy starting, and then other moments when I said "oh, that's why".... Reuben looks the part of an NFL receiver, and was getting good separation, etc., but dropped a couple easy ones (and made a great grab in the endzone). If he could put it all together, he could play on Sundays, so really hoping for him this is his break-out year. If there was one guy who stands out as a potential star in the making to me, it was Irvin. He breaks tackles and accelerates away like a keeper. Butler looks like a compact beast and should be a great compliment. Just my two cents.

Re Elic, he was walking past the stands (walking fine) and someone shouted out and asked why he wasn't suited up. Elic kind of shrugged and said "I'm not cleared yet" -- cleared from what, by whom, he didn't say...

If he required surgery for the separated shoulder, he'd need 4 to 6 months recovery time. That's my theory, but it's just a guess.
By the way, another amazing aspect of Ayomanor's redshirt freshman campaign is that it was his first year back from an ACL/MCL/meniscus tear the previous season.
So the dude not only clocks 21.5mph on 97-yard touchdowns but he's also a frickin' warrior.

Unrelated to his shoulder or knee.

Here's a Daily article about the spring game.
Cites one of the pay sites in reporting that Ayomanor had surgery for a sports hernia and that Bachmeier had a knee surgery, but that both are "likely" to be ready for fall camp.
Also: Trevor Mayberry, a starter on the OL for most of last year, this spring played on the defensive line. I can't imagine this bodes well for the defensive depth at Stanford, but hopefully it's a switch benefitting both Mayberry and the team. I applaud the coaches for trying anything that can possibly make the defense better.

This team is 3-5 yrs. away from relevance. And that assumes really great recruiting.

Can you please elaborate on what you mean by relevance?
I don’t intend to be snarky.
I just think It just can mean different things to different people.

I don't intend to speak for gailtate, but if I were to use the term 'relevance' in this context, it would mean having a realistic chance to get into the 12-team playoff.

Mayberry is #61, right? Unfortunately I remember him b/c I watched 2 painful losses in a row on TV this year and he was almost always getting either overwhelmed or beaten by the pass rush.
From that very limited sample, I think the move to D can only help.

Forgive me if this has been posted elsewhere, but here's some very positive comments about Coach Taylor's program by former David Shaw player, Stanford's OG, circa 2009, Andy Phillips:

if this Coach TT team has a fraction of that prior generation's skyrocket improvement, it can be a success
