Ricky Pearsall Shot in SF - cardcrimson - 08-31-2024

Niner's first round draft pick and rookie WR Ricky Pearsall was shot today, apparently during a robbery in Union Square in Downtown SF. Pearsall is in the hospital in stable condition. Prayers are with him.

RE: Ricky Pearsall Shot in SF - Mick - 08-31-2024

He was on his way to an autograph show. Mugger tried to steal his Rolex, 3:37 p.m.. Happened at Geary and Grant, just off Union Square, in the intersection by Brunello Cuccinelli.

He was shot in the chest, is in serious but stable condition. He made it to the ambulance under his own power, taken to Zuckerberg SF General. Suspect in custody.

One report said he had been at the signing show earlier at the Cow Palace. Report said robbery attempt was over a Rolex. Another report said suspect was also shot and at SF General.

glad his condition is stable.  suspect is 17, so no telling if his name will be released.

SF was once a wonderful city to visit.

I doubt it. He's going to be tried in juvenile court.

If you dig into the data, violent crime is much lower in SF than it was 10-20 years ago.  And far, far lower than, say, in the 80s or 90s. It's not even close.

Not saying that SF doesn't have plenty of problems.  But the idea that it's some sort of uninhabitable war zone is just false.

RE: Ricky Pearsall Shot in SF - Mick - 09-01-2024

My 6'4" weightlifting son used to live and work in SF (near Coit Tower) during summers in college, and he carried a knife to work because he didn't feel particularly safe.

Today, 10 years later, he says it's not too bad. He lives a block from Ghirardelli Square, so...nicer neighborhood. But he's not moving any time soon.

I'm not a doomsayer, but it's weird that 17-yr olds with guns think it's okay to commit violent crimes of chance in broad daylight in a fairly well-trafficked part of the city.  Glad Pearsall is stable -- could have been an artery or heart :(

RE: Ricky Pearsall Shot in SF - cardcrimson - 09-01-2024

According to a post from his mom, the bullet entered his chest and went out the back, missing any vital organs. Amazingly fortunate.

As for SF, glad the crime rate is down, but vacancy rates are at historic highs. Fewer people to rob?

Retail vacancy around Union Square is at 20%, city-wide around 8%:

Nearly one third of all offices in SF are vacant, also an historic high:

That, and the fact that it wasn't a local child, but a teen who came in from Tracy to commit some mayhem. That was weird in and of itself.

My wife's a shopper and used to go to Union Square regularly, by herself, day or night. About 10-12 years ago, she stopped going at night. Five years ago, she stopped going without me to escort her, and two years ago, she insisted we depart before 3 p.m.. Of course, without the 140 retail outlets that have closed since COVID, there's not as much of a reason to go there any more.

Not sure what that says or portends, but nothing good, I imagine.

I doubt it. He's going to be tried in juvenile court.

In California, it is up to a judge to determine whether a 17 year old accused of a serious offense can be tried in adult court.  It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

out of the hospital!

RE: Ricky Pearsall Shot in SF - fullmetal - 09-01-2024

That's near miraculous on both parts imo: no vitals hit and out of the hospital already.  I hope he relishes his good fortune and makes the most of his life going forward.

RE: Ricky Pearsall Shot in SF - cctop - 09-01-2024

FWIW I was just in downtown SF & Union Square today.

It was a gorgeous day with lots of people out and about, though maybe half as many people as there were before Covid.

The sidewalks were clean, no tents, very few homeless.

Tourists were lined up halfway down the block to get on the cable cars at the Powell St. turnaround.

The Tenderloin is still the Tenderloin, but downtown SF and Union Square are nothing like what's portrayed in the media, which makes this attack feel out of place and shocking.

Completely agree. He gets serious points for walking to the ambulance after getting shot through and through in the chest area.

into the chest and out his back without hitting vital organs? hard to picture. the chest sure is filled with vital organs - lungs, heart, major arteries and veins. maybe he was shot just inside the shoulder, but then the bullet would at least pierce his scapula as it emerges through his back. not a vital organ i suppose, but important for catching footballs. likely to have 1 or more broken ribs as well.

or is he terminator 2?

Thanks for sharing. I've been refraining from posting to this OT thread because I live in SF and work blocks from the Tenderloin, so maybe I'm too close, physically and emotionally.

I'll keep it at this: SF takes up a lot of rent free space in certain people's heads, and the fact that the demand for $3k one bedroom apartments continues to persist despite that probably says all that needs to be said about its overall balance of vices and virtues.

Very glad he is doing so well, and may make a full and rapid recovery.

And I'll close with this: I'm quite proud and happy to call SF home.
