WBB: Stanford 72 Cal 75 - 81alum - 01-21-2025

We played Cal five weeks ago and got badly thumped.  The game thread for that game is here:

https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=25347&pid=424702&highlight=WBB#pid424702

I won't repeat the preview I wrote for the game at that time.  Instead I will focus on what the two teams have done since December 13.

Since Cal walloped us, they are 7-2.  They lost (as did we) to Duke and Clemson, but they beat (as we did not) North Carolina State and SMU.  They are currently ranked 21/22, with Massey having them at 32.  Their NET ranking is 33.

Since Cal walloped us, we are 3-5, unranked, with Massey having us (generously) at 38.  Our NET ranking is 42.

In looking at how Cal is playing lately--we all know about the meltdown at Duke.  We probably acquitted ourselves better against Duke than they did, although that is not saying very much.  Cal's subsequent win against Wake Forest, however, left them with a good feeling after the trip.  Cal's defense was solid, holding Wake to 55 points, and they got their three pointers to start falling again--Twidale and Krimili had 8.  Last time we defended  against their three point shooting poorly, and Cal set a record against us.

Oniah is pretty much averaging a double-double, and she had 10 and 10 against Wake to keep that going.  Suarez led them in points against Wake.  Notice I just mentioned four players as very significant offensive threats--we can't afford to neglect EITHER the paint or the perimeter when we are defending.

Hopefully having 5 weeks to prepare will pay off and this game will look a lot different than the last one.  We need a win like this one to make the Tournament.

I'm afraid Kal is just the better team this year.
The better team, however, doesn't always win.
That's what I'm counting on for Thursday.

Yes, we can hope.

Playing at Maples has been much, much better for us than on the road, so there is that.  I also think our inexperienced team has the greater opportunity for improvement and they have been showing signs.  Ijiwoye is a factor now and she really wasn't on December 13.  December 13 is about the time we realized how other teams were going to deny us the three point line and we have been working on our response ever since.  So I do think we will  perform better than in December.  We have certainly not reached our ceiling and so every game there is a chance that the puzzle pieces may fall in place.

Whether all of that is enough for a win remains to be seen.

Tiffany Bird and Chuck Gonzales. Oh, yay.

Half way through the 1st Q, Cal is shooting 83%.

Seemed like a weak foul on Clardy. Okay if we get those calls too, I suppose.

Just checked the score, and promptly closed the browser window.  Still early, but ooof.

Some bizarre calls. No clue on that foul on Demetre. Again glad to see the ACC has done nothing to improve officiating.

Defense non-existent in q1 for Stanford.

No replays being shown?

Demetre's box out was good, but then she backed into the Cal player too forcefully.

They are calling all fouls, so it's time to get Agara in there and get Ohyiah her 3rd foul.

I got called for that once in an 8th grade rec league. Literally never called in a real game.

I think someone is moving the basket when Stanford shoots from distance.

I can't believe how similar KP's manner of speaking is to Tara's.  I listened to the audio of the pre-game interview and thought they were talking to Tara.

Clardy has been a bright spot. Not much has been going right otherwise.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Cal Thurs 7pm; preview and game thread - Griffins78 - 01-23-2025

I wish Clardy would improve her passing. Too many head scratching turnovers

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Cal Thurs 7pm; preview and game thread - mbdude - 01-23-2025

what is being said at halftime? let the other team shoot, maybe they will miss

Kal has an 18 point lead halfway through Q3.
I expected this one to be at least fairly close.
Oh well.
