How many games will Stanford football win this season? - Papa John - 07-23-2025

Stanford football has suffered through 4 consecutive 3-9 seasons. By my calculations, that .250 wins/game average is the second-worst four-year streak in school history--1958 through 1961 Stanford went 2-8, 3-7, 0-10 (!) and 4-6 for a .225 average.

If we go back to 2019, the season following Stanford's most recent bowl appearance, the wins/game average is .303, the third-worst six-year streak in school history. The worst is 1958-1963--2-8, 3-7, 0-10, 4-6, 5-5 and 3-7 for a .283 average; second worst is 2002-2007--2-9, 4-7, 4-7, 5-6, 1-11, 4-8 for a .294 average.

The good news is that both previous nadirs were followed by significant improvements, as opposed to sustained mediocrity or worse. The Jack Curtice-led swoon of 1958-1962 was followed by the glory years of College Hall of Fame coach John Ralston, who, from 1963-1971 compiled a 55-36-3 record and back-to-back Rose Bowl wins. The Buddy-Walt years were followed by Jim Harbaugh's resurgence and a full decade of winning football.

So what will the 2025 season bring? Will we suffer another losing season and possibly establish the worst stretch of football results in school history? Will Frank Reich steady the ship in a transition year that will lead to another period of sustained success? There have been a smattering of divergent opinions, but the purpose of this poll is to collect the predictions of a broader swath of the CardBoard community.

I picked 6+ because I'm a fan and it seems wrong to predict another sub-.500 year, not because of any objective factors that make me think the team actually will win 6+ games.

Bless you, TrumpCard.

I put down 4.  My head says the consensus media prediction of three is a better choice but I want to be a LITTLE optimistic even if it's tough to find 4 wins on our schedule.  We need another Harbaugh, too soon to know if Reich is that guy.

RE: How many games will Stanford football win this season? - Mick - 07-23-2025

I went with six. Not sure if we will win the bowl game... ;)

Incidentally, after the 3-8 1998 season, I predicted 8-3 in 1999 and nailed that season's 8-3 record when most folks, including a Mr. winded thought I was nuts and two wins were more likely. I did not, however, predict the Rose Bowl that in fact happened.

Feeling the same vibe this season...

voted 4 wins.  this appears to be the median as well as the mode, at least for now.

Me too. I may not think that we have a good chance of winning, but that's what I thought before Tavita's U$C game. I can't get myself to ever pick against Stanford.

It was sad to see that the options stopped with 6+

I just hope the team looks strong enough that someone believes coming to The Farm would be a good first head coaching role.
And for me 4 wins with 2+ one score losses hopefully will be enough, so I elected the 4 win prediction.

FWIW I just hope the team has a good number of close games so that players see an upside for 2026 and decide to stay for the next coach.

last year we won three and had four one score losses (TCU 27-34, WF 24-27, Big Game 21-24, SJSU 31-34), oh so close to seven wins....we also had two one score wins (Syracuse 26-24, Louisville 38-35), oh so close to one win....

Hopefully we're a little better and win 4 (which is my prediction in the poll)....and I would really, really like us to win Big Game......

Papa John, thanks so much for reminding me of how bad our football team was when I was at Stanford.  i have tried to forget it.

I failed to take a position on this subject.  i fully expect us to win 6 games minimum. Why?
Better Coaching in the sense of a system, and buy in by all the players to the system. I think Reich has succeeded in creating a team ethos that Taylor never reached. Most importantly we need butts in the seats, but until I see an AD plan for doing this I am still doubtful

Buddy Teevens can say something similar. In 2004 (his last year), they started out 3-1 with multi-TD victories over Washington, BYU and SJSU; and a three-point loss to #1 USC at Stanford. He had a three-point loss to #23 Arizona, three-point loss to Oregon and a five-point loss to Oregon State. They went 4-7 but had four losses of less than a TD. All that stood between Buddy and an 8-3 record were four TDs, either on offense or defense. But he lost to Cal, 41-6. Nice guys finish up back at Dartmouth -- ultimately with four 9-1 seasons and two 8-2 seasons. And if you visit Dartmouth today, you can see the Buddy Teevens Stadium and the Buddy Teevens Center for Peak Performance. Not bad.

Papa John, thanks so much for reminding me of how bad our football team was when I was at Stanford.  i have tried to forget it.

GK3, I feel your pain. As a Stanford student I was present for the events of November 20, 1982 in Strawberry Canyon. Wish I could forget that.

For what it's worth, the football wins/game during my five years at Stanford, which are the 1980-84 seasons, is .345 (6-5, 4-7, 5-6, 1-10, 5-6). The first three of those were Elway's final three years, and Stanford would have attended bowl games with Big Game wins in 1980 and 1982.

Back to this year's team, I still haven't heard discussion about how the 2025 team is improved over the 2023 and 2024 teams, other than coaching and the strength of schedule. It seems to me that there will be equal or less talent in every position group, especially QB.

When I Google "stanford football returning starters 2025," Google's AI tells me that "Key players like quarterback Kevin Jennings, linebacker Tevarua Tafiti, and safety Jay Green are expected to be major contributors." That would be great if it were true. Kevin Jennings is the starting QB for SMU...

If you want current news like on yesterday’s first practice read or join The old bootleg now 247. An awesome story

RE: How many games will Stanford football win this season? - Papa John - 07-24-2025

BobK, I read Jackson Moore's 247 free article. I learned that:
(1) Coach Reich thinks the players made significant progress working on their own during the offseason.
(2) QB is an open competition between Elijah Brown (QB3 last season), Ben Gulbranson (QB2 at Oregon State the last two seasons) and Dylan Rizk (unsuccessful QB1 at UCF at the end of last season).
(3) Stanford's transfer class has 17(!) incoming student-athletes.
(4) Stanford's freshman class, which ranks 56th nationally, has a 4-star WR.

Overall, according to 247, Stanford has 35 incoming players total. Not that rankings are perfect, but there are only three 4-stars among that group. Overall, 247 ranks this group as 54th nationally.

Maybe the VIP article has more info that would instill confidence that 2025 will be better than 2024?

Rizk is unsuccessful? His stats look pretty good compared to the other two

Some say Rizk's arm is a bit weenie like. I dunno.

UCF does have five QBs on their roster (four transferred in at one time or another) so it seems that maybe he either was nudged out or didn't like where he thought he was on the depth chart, or maybe he realized that he could go to Stanford and that the Stanford degree was much better than a UCF degree.....

He as recruited by Northwestern, so he has to have something on the ball academically. He came in as a starter last four games of last season, crushed Arizona 56-12, lost a close one to ASU 31-35, lost by 10 to west VA, then by two TDs to Utah. UCF finished 4-8 but started 3-0. He's the best returning QB, my guess is they told him it'd be an open competition. Former Cardinal Scott Frost is the recently named head coach at UCF, and transfer Cam Fancher had 6 starts and transfer Tayven Jackson had the most talent upside, so...adios Rizk.
