MBB: Stanford vs. UNLV, 1PM, ACCNX - skip75 - 12-07-2025

In the long road that is the Stanford men's basketball season, the latest winding turn brings the Runnin' Rebels to Maples for the final game before  a break for final exams.  Stanford is favored by 9.5 and the over/under is 165.5.  Implied score is 87.5-78.  UNLV is 3-5.  Their best win was a road victory over Memphis, so they can be a dangerous team (although they also lost at home to Tennessee Martin and Montana).  They are 0-3 vs. Power 4 teams, with all of those losses coming during Thanksgiving week at the Players Era Men's Championship at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.  They have dealt with injuries all season, which particularly affected the size and depth of their frontcourt in those three games.  The 10-day break since their last game has likely improved their health, but the status for three players for today's game remains unknown (at least, to me).

Josh Pastner is UNLV's first-year coach.  He was on Arizona's 1997 national championship team.  He served as an assistant coach under Lute Olsen at UofA, and then under John Calipari at Memphis.  He has 14 seasons of head coaching experience at Memphis and Georgia Tech.  Eric Reveno was on his staff at Georgia Tech for five seasons.  The Rebels have only one returning player on their roster, which also includes eight D1 transfers, three freshmen, a JC transfer, and a player from the National Basketball League of New Zealand.

Probable starters are:
#0 Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn (6'1/185 Jr G)  Transfer from Illinois, leads with 16.6ppg and 1.75 3s/game.  Also 3.0 assists/game;
#12 Isaac Williamson (6'0/165 Fr G)   14.0 ppg;
#3 Howie Fleming Jr. (6'5/210 RSr G)  Leads with 3.1 assists/game and 4.1 fouls/game.  Also 6.0 rebounds/game;
#6 Tyrin Jones (6'9/190 Fr F)  Leads with 6.1 rebounds/game and 2.25 blocks/game;
#2 Kimani Hamilton (6'8/225 Sr F)  13.4 ppg; Transfer from High Point, where he was a two-time All Big South honoree;

The three players (all forwards) who have missed recent games with injuries are: #1 Ladji Dembele (6'8/255 Jr); #24 Naas Cunningham (6'7/175 RFr); and #10 Jacob Bannarbie (6'9/235 RSo).  Three other players (including Emmanuel Stephen - a 7'0" transfer from Arizona) have yet to see action this year and are not expected to be available before December 20.

The opposition is better today, but features of the Portland game that I would like to see repeated include: six players in double figure scoring (including three off the bench); prolific 3-point shooting in terms of both volume and accuracy (would be nice to get Cameron Grant back on track); double digit steals and turnover margin; the continuing emergence of Oskar Giltay.

Oof.  Up 1 at the half but this has been a bad game so far.  Terrible shot selection, non-existent interior defense. We're gonna lose if they keep playing like this.

I hate to call out individual players, but Okpara has three unnecessary turnovers so far, and he needs to be playing less.  He doesn't bring enough on offense or defense to be getting starters minutes.

I'd love to see a big lineup with Giltay (for defense) and Rohosy (for offense) at the same time.

Right now, Stanford's guards are just not great at creating assists, so imo Okpara has to be out there because he's one of the few Stanford players able to create his own offense.

Stanford up 39-38 at the half.  Stephen started for UNLV and has been a force inside with 10 points and 5 rebounds.  Cunningham also playing.

Agarwal leads Stanford with 10 points.  Giltay has 5 points and 6 rebounds in 8 minutes.

The way the game is officiated now it resembles 5 on 5 wrestling more than it does basketball…

Okpara is great at getting to the basket but very bad at finishing.  On "close" 2 point shots he's hitting 51% this year, which is well below the D-I average.  It seems like everything he puts up is extremely well defended and high degree of difficulty.  If he'd just pass out to a wing a few more times a game, it would make the team much better.

in other words, the officiating meets the current NCAA standards.

Ugly, ugly, ugly.....

what a collapse. zero offense down the stretch

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. UNLV, 1PM, ACCNX - burger - 12-07-2025

Okpara's unforced TO (he drove into a double team) with 1:20 to go was the turning point.  He shouldn't have been in the game.

Today was far from Smith's best coaching job.  Stephen had 4 fouls from 5 minutes on, and we never once targeted him. Gealer was on the bench for the final couple of minutes. I'd much rather have Rohosy in the game than Camann near the end, but Rohosy was sitting. Just a lot of questionable stuff.

Oh, and let's not forget that we finished the game with an unused timeout.

F**k!!!!

This type of loss really pi***s my off. We blow a win with lack of offense at the end. We let them shoot 50% for the game. Crappy, crappy, crappy.

A stinker for Coach Smith
I’m sure he’s pissed
Now our men’s team has matched our women’s team with a likely bad loss that could haunt later if get into tournament consideration
Maybe Seattle was bad loss already, not sure

Did you mean NIT consideration?

The ACC is having a horrible start to the season, so it is really unlikely conference invites to NCAA will extend too far below Duke, UNC and Louisville.

I think realistic stretch goals for this team will be to finish in the top half of the ACC and participate in the NIT.

I fear this team will really struggle with those cross continent trips to ACC venues, so perhaps a .500 plus record at home against conference opponents with a couple of ACC road wins is likely a more realistic expectation level.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. UNLV, 1PM, ACCNX - BostonCard - 12-07-2025

This team is not going to a tournament.  Stanford is currently rated #88 by Bart Tovic’s site (https://barttorvik.com/trank.php#), behind Belmont.  He projects us to end up 14th in the ACC, behind Cal with a projected record of 17-14 (7-11 in the ACC).

Bear in mind that we were projected to finish 17th at the start of the season, so it is still an improvement over (preseason) expectations, but I think people got a little bit too excited about some wins over bad teams.

Okorie struggled relative to the level he's played at previously, Okpara had a bad game and Stanford still had a chance to win at the end. Yes, it was against a bad UNLV team, but I think the team can hopefully learn something from the loss and improve.

Don't give up all hope of 20 wins just yet.

Rohosy was  zero for four from the free shot line and is shooting at a 29% rate from the line this season. You just can’t afford to have him in the game down the stretch. I think this is first time Okorie has seen determined defenders who are quick as he is. He will get used to it but as a freshman , he still needs to make some adjustments . Having him in games like this down the stretch is critical for his development.  You never like to lose but if his development costs you a game it’s a worth while.

I think your other points are valid , though I am more inclined to cut Smith some slack than you are .

Just the other day in a different thread, I said that I liked Smith as coach.  That hasn't changed--this was just a stinker of a game.

Agree, still like the coach, stinker of a game. But if the stinker games continue, I won't like the coach quite so much.
My guess, based on his past elsewhere, and more recent with us, is he is pissed about it too and working on getting out a better game next one up.
