WBB: Stanford v. Cal - 1 p.m. ACCNX - triangle2 - 12-14-2025
This is the ACC opener for both teams. Cal is 8-3, Massey rating of 54, NET 67. Cal is 0-2 quad 1, and 1-1 quad 2. This seems like as much a “who are we” game for them as it is for us.

55-52 Cal at the end of the 3rd quarter - we had a seven point lead at the beginning of the quarter. Ogden leads the team with 18 points - Somfai with 9 and Clardy with 8. Nunu is having a hard time at the basket.

Two very big threes, by Ogden and Clardy, and Stanford leads 69-62 with 2 minutes left.
Not a pretty game, but Stanford has come up when needed, and has outscored Cal 17-7 in the fourth.

78-69 is your final. Stanford outscored Cal 26-14 in the fourth quarter. Ogden with a career high (and game high) 25 points. Somfai with another double double (12 pts/13 boards). Tough day for Agara (5/13 shooting) but she still almost wound up with a double-double (12 pts/9 boards).

Yes, not pretty, but I think the team showed a lot of grit and determination in a game where shots that should have been made simply weren't going in. NuNu in particular was struggling, but she never gave up, never backed off. As for Courtney, she was obviously the star of the day, but lots of credit has to go to Lara as well -- not only the 12 points, including 2 threes, and 13 boards, but she also had 3 blocks -- was in there pressing and working hard, a force.
Lots to bemoan re the shooting, but by the end, the Card outrebounded a team that has a +4.9 rebound edge over previous opponents. AND the free throw shooting continues to be really good. That's going to be important all season long. I think this was a really good win, against a good Cal team.
Now, onward to U Dub on Friday, a top 25 team. I'll be there, yelling. Hope that lots of you are there as well.

A usual percentage of those shots go in, and the Card would've won by at least 20. I'm glad they kept shooting, though, 'cos they finally started to go in. Aside from the shooting woes, I thought this was the best played game all year (so far).

A grind of a game with Nunu struggling. She did keep working and ended up with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Importantly, Coach Paye made the right adjustments and the team started denying the easy positioning and passes to Walker. They also double, even triple teamed her during some of her possessions. That stopped the bleeding. Having Ogden being aggressive and making shots all game was great to see in this game and hopefully is a sign of things to come. The rest of the team turned up their defensive intensity during much of the second half and held Cal to under their typical scoring percentages.
The freshman players had a rough game. Somfai did the best but had moments of trying to do too much and getting beat on defense. She needs to be in the game and Coach Paye played her over 30 minutes along with the rest of today's best five (Agara, Ogden, Lepolo, and Clardy). Swain continues to struggle with her shot but still played 17 minutes. I think that was right for this game. Coach Paye has to balance the development of young players to give them time to grow but not destroy their confidence. I think Swain will start finishing better once she adjusts to the speed, size, and mostly, the physicality of college play. This was a good win for the team's development. Hopefully, they continue to improve over the next two tough games.

In fairness to Eschmeyer, she played good physical defense but got few touches on the offensive end. I think once you have Somfai and Agara on the floor, it’s hard to find her minutes when Ogden is playing this well. The minutes distribution was interesting. Paye kept Somfai on the floor and let her play through some ill-advised fouls.
Ogden looks like a classic Stanford development project blossoming as a junior. Making the transition from inefficient and turnover prone to this — so happy to see her progress.
