WBB: ACC Tournament - crackpot - 03-01-2026

We play Miami.

We have the first game -- 8 a.m. PT (in case you need any more proof that we are the most-hated team in the conference).

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament - old spanish trail - 03-01-2026

I think we have the worst record of the first day teams.

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament - jonnyss - 03-01-2026

playing notre dame on the second day doesn't sound like fun.

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament - 2006alum - 03-01-2026

Before this weekend our path was Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. I liked that a lot better.

Although an 8 am revenge game against Miami will tell us whether Our Gals are hungry for a post season or not.

And to think - we were picked to finish 6th in the ACC... Not 13th...

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament - petersalas - 03-01-2026

We were at the bar at the hotel last night and overheard some Clemson staff members saying Stanford and Cal asked if they could finish the season on the east coast then go to the ACC tournament in Georgia but the ACC would not agree or something like that. So yeah, I think you’re right..

This is exactly what the men are doing next week. Playing Saturday at NC State and just staying in Carolina till the tourney starts nearby.

I think this is a path that by winning some games can get us back into the serious bubble consideration. I don’t mind the Miami rematch. Beating Notre Dame will be a challenge but also provide us a key resume win.

I’m hoping for not a replay of last years ACC tourney. We were playing quite well to end the regular season and then went to ACC tourney and had maybe one of the worst performances against Clemson. It was quick one and done.

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament - jacket3ree - 03-01-2026

Y'all really expected favorable treatment as an 11 seed?  Or even as a geographic outlier? Luck of the draw. Maybe next time Stanford should join a conference that isn't headquartered in Charlotte, NC. Or maybe get back to where you once belonged, a top 4 conference seed. They don't play until Friday. Then no one would be thinking it would be better to spend all week on the east coast, between the last regular season game and the tournament.

This is the first time ever that the ACC women's tournament has been played outside of the Carolinas. That only took 49 years. Now that you mention it, I'm a little surprised it isn't in San Jose. Gas South Arena is out in Gwinnett County northeast of Atlanta. Capacity is 13,000. Normally hosts minor league hockey and box lacrosse, whatever that is. Curious that they didn't select a venue downtown on mass transit. McCamish (8,600 capacity) is 3 blocks from the Midtown Station or State Farm Arena (17,600) is right there at the GWCC/CNN Station.  I watched some of the Duke-Carolina game and the Dean Dome looked pretty full, so they might expect decent crowds depending on who is playing.

Whomever wanted one of the Techs would only get their wish if Stanford makes the finals along with Georgia Tech or Virginia Tech.

Have to say that if Karen Blair makes any kind of noise in this tournament with the decimated roster she started with this year, she's a coach. They did lay a 30-point beating on Miami today. Actually, just getting into this tournament might mean she's a coach. Rooting for some hometown magic. Why not?

and looking at the bracket for 2025 the schedule is the same for day 1 with

game 1 - #13 vs #12
game 2 - #15 vs #10
game 3 - #14 vs #11

Hate us?

No, we need to ASPIRE to be hated.  Teams in the ACC hate Duke, Notre Dame, North Carolina.  They don't notice us.

As JacketTree says above, let's win a bit before complaining about getting the 13th seed treatment we heartily deserve.  We were at the top in 2021 and had been in or around the top 10 for decades. We've got some ground to recover but right now we're seeing how the other half lives.

Getting to the finals is better, but they may need to win it to get in. Net ranking right now is 42 which would be right at the bubble line without other upsets. Realistically, that is out right now, and our 8-10 in conference doesn’t help. 9-9 or 10-8 would be a lot more comfortable. Beating Miami will help exactly 0, but beating ND and NC State would be a positive though I am not sure it gets us over the hump. Beating Duke might get it done. We will see.

I'm no "bracketologist", but this seems a bit pessimistic to me. According to Charlie Creme, Stanford went from "Next 4 out" to "1st 4 out" with the win over Clemson. I agree that beating Miami (NET 58) doesn't help, but beating Notre Dame (NET 24) is a significantly bigger deal than beating Clemson (fell from NET 38 to 44). I believe that has a chance of getting them in - obviously the results of the other "bubble" teams will have an impact. And I think that following that up with a win over NC State (NET 23) would almost certainly get them in - unless the results of every other "bubble" team work against them. If they would then beat Duke (NET 10), I would be shocked if they were left out.

But first things first. Beating Miami is certainly not a given. And if they do move on, playing on consecutive days will be a challenge given what seems to have become pretty much a 7-player rotation. The 3-game mini winning streak is encouraging, but there is no margin for error at this point.

RE: WBB Stanford Clemson - OCcardinal - 03-02-2026

I think there are scenarios where Stanford makes the tournament with just a win over Miami. Compare our team to Washington, who got an 11 seed play in game last season.

Net Ranking
Stanford 42 (as of now)
Washington 44 (end of season)

Strength of Schedule
Stanford 64 (as of now)
Washington 42 (after the ACC and NCAA tournaments)

Worst Loss
Stanford NET 172 FGBU (62-66 November Neutral site)
Washington NET 184 Montana (68-82 November Away Game)

Total Wins
Stanford 19 (as of now)
Washington 19 (including the Big 10 tournament win)

Stanford - Best Wins
-NET 19 North Carolina (#16) Away
-NET 26 Oregon Neutral
-NET 27 Washington Home
-NET 64 Gonzaga Away
-NET 44 Clemson Home
-NET 53 California Home
-[Assume NET 58 Miami Neutral]
Quad 1: 2-6
Quad 2: 5-4 [assuming Miami win]

Washington's Best Wins
-NET 29 Illinois Away
-NET 37 Minnesota Away
-NET 40 Nebraska Away
-NET 37 Minnesota Neutral (Tournament)
-NET 41 Oregon Home
Quad 1: 3-9
Quad 2: 2-4

Streaks
Stanford: From January 11, went 2-9, then won 3 in a row, including 2 blowouts, with tournament coming up (only 1 big win though - the one over Clemson)
Washington: From January 12, Washington went 2-8, then won 5 in a row, including the tournament win before losing to 5 seed Michigan. However, some of its best wins were in that streak at the and (2 over Minnesota and the wins over Nebraska and Oregon)

Overall, Stanford's best wins are better than Washington's last season, but Washington benefitted from a streak of wins of over good (if not great) teams at the end and had a better SOS. I think we'd have to hope a fair number of bubble teams lose early in their conference tournaments to get in without at least 2 ACC tournament wins.

Tied for 11th by record, but played on the road and lost to Georgia Tech and Miami. Get to play Miami on a neutral court.

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament - Hieronymus - 03-02-2026

Net ranking is currently #42. In theory that would be an 11 seed in the tournament, but there are 31 auto qualifiers out of 68 teams; so right now we are definitely out. Beating Miami won’t help much (net #58), but we need to win to keep playing. I don’t think 2 wins will be enough. 3 wins might be enough, but ND and NCST definitely would be good wins (net #23 and #24). 4 wins is much better, adding likely Duke to the list (net #10). Obviously, 5 wins guarantees us a spot in the NCAAs.

I hope so, but I will note UW was 9-9 in a top 2 conference, and I think that makes a world of difference vs. 8-10 in what is only the third best conference this year. It is possible 2 or 3 wins does it though I think it’s unlikely at 2 wins and it depends at 3 wins. Only beating Miami I don’t think has any chance of getting them in. We will see.

31 auto qualifiers out of 68 total teams leaves 37 at-large spots.  But many of the automatic qualifiers are in the top 37 teams so they don’t take up an extra slot.  For example, last year Princeton got in as the final 11 seed with a NET rating of 46, which implies that there were 9 automatic qualifiers with a NET rating better than 46.

I think we need to beat Miami, mostly to avoid dropping in the NET rankings.  After that, it will depend on how many upsets there are in conference tournaments and what other bubble teams do.  A win against Notre Dame should be enough.

RE: WBB: ACC Tournament - 2006alum - 03-03-2026

Moved a few posts from the Clemson game thread here since they were solely about what we need to do in the ACC tournament and it felt like we were having the same convo in two separate threads.

OCardinal, I love the energy you're bringing to the assignment, but the only proper comparators for Stanford this season are other bubble teams this season - each year the bubble is different, so it can be stronger one year and weaker the next. I definitely agree that we're stronger than Washington was last season, but the teams we need to worry about are the ones at or above us in Creme's latest projection

LAST FOUR BYES
Princeton (NET 38, Q1 1-1, Q2 4-1)
Nebraska (25, 1-10, 4-0)
Colorado (46, 1-4, 5-4)
Mississippi St. (39, 2-9, 1-2)

FIRST FOUR OUT
Richmond (37, 0-2, 3-3)
Utah (55, 2-2, 4-8)
South Dakota St (43, 1-3, 2-2)
Stanford (42, 2-6, 4-5)

NEXT FOUR OUT
Arizona St. (52, 0-5, 7-1)
Texas A&M (61, 2-9, 5-0)
BYU (57, 0-4, 8-4)
Kansas (49, 1-7, 2-4)

So now we know who to root against this week! ;)
