Re: SKOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVV - JohnR34231 - 01-05-2013

Nice!

Dare we hope for Ertz?

Re: SKOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVV - OutsiderFan - 01-05-2013

This probably means Murphy returns too.  Stanford players are smart.  It's only smart to leave early if you are sure to be a first round pick, or if you really need to get paid for personal reasons.

Ertz probably projects as the #1 or #2 TE, so it would be smart for him to go early.

Toilolo is another story.  He's not going to be a first or second round pick, or even third or fourth.  He really needs another year to improve his game.  Sure he has height, but he does not play nearly as tall as say Joseph Fauria (UCLA) at 6-7, who will be drafted ahead of Levine without a doubt.  I just saw one draft board that doesn't have Toilolo among the Top 25 TEs.  The same list has Ertz #2 behind Eifert.

But I wouldn't rule out everyone coming back to make a run at the crystal football.  This Stanford team seems to be a pretty tight-knit group.  Guys like Gardner and Skov could provide the leadership pull to get everyone to come back with them to make a title run.

Re: SKOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVV - iyengar06 - 01-05-2013

Murphy is coming back too!

Re: SKOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVV - Hurlburt88 - 01-05-2013

brobdingnagian!!!

I suspect Ertz goes, but Toilolo returns to hone his game.  we'll see . . . but either way with this news our defense is looking quite stout!

Re: SKOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVV - fullers - 01-05-2013

Last i heard was that Toilolo is ready to try something new (NFL). Druk and Lombardi both said this, I believe.

Re: SKOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVV - dabigv13 - 01-05-2013

I think Skov and Murphy were always coming back. I wouldn't be surprised if Ertz comes back either, most of the projections have him going in the second round. He could certainly improve on that, as well as get his degree, have another year with his buddies, etc. Leaving wouldn't surprise me, but staying wouldn't either.

The rumblings I keep hearing about Toilolo are strange, he's a mid round pick at best and would seem to have a lot of room to grow. But I suppose it boils down to his own particular situation.

Re: SKOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVV - socalstanfan1 - 01-05-2013

Toilolo would be wise to come back for another year, but perhaps there are other factors we don't know about (family, financial, etc.) that are influencing the decision.  I hope he decides to return, but if he has finished his degree, maybe he feels it is time to give the NFL a shot.  The fact that he has already suffered one devastating knee injury could also play into his thinking.  Maybe nobody knows better than Toilolo and Skov how quickly you can lose any shot at the next level.  Both of them have managed to come back, and Skov has chosen to return for another year.  But perhaps Levine doesn't want to take that chance.

Re: SKOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVV - DC - 01-05-2013

Three years ago, Toilolo won the starting TE job ahead of Fleener, Ertz and Hewitt, before he was injured and out for the season perhaps on the first play of the first game against Sac State.  Fleener went on to have a great year, including in the Orange Bowl, as well as the following year, the Fiesta Bowl year.  This year, with Fleener graduated, Ertz has shone.

Before he got injured, he somehow outshones Fleener and Ertz in practice, but in games since, Fleener and Ertz have performed much better.  I would think Toilolo would be best served by returning for another year of seasoning, but maybe he just wants to move on.

Re: SKOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVV - StannyBoy - 01-06-2013

Wtf is wrong with everyone saying Ertz needs to get his degree? He's a senior and is graduating. Same with Toilolo. Even if Toilolo won't go as high as Ertz he will still make good money. TE's rarely go first round so Toilolo coming back to improve his stock isn't the same as other positions. Gronkowski went 2nd round and he was always going to be great. Aaron Hernandez went 4th round and he had a great college career too, won the Mackey award as a junior. If Toilolo comes back good for him. If not I don't think he will have any regrets and should do just fine no matter where he gets drafted.

I'm sure dabigV is flattered by your referring to him as "everyone," since he's the only person on this entire thread who has suggested that Ertz could get a degree by staying an extra year.

Re: SKOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVV - 82 Card - 01-06-2013

Last year, a lot of articles made it sound like it was very special that Luck didn't join the Colts until after graduation. If a player still needs credits this spring to get their degree, is the NFL going to cooperate with someone who doesn't have quite the market power of Luck?

Re: SKOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVV - fullmetal - 01-06-2013

NFL teams will take that into account when drafting, I think.  But for non-QB positions, I think they'll be less wary about lost time with the teams.

Re: SKOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVV - dabigv13 - 01-06-2013

I recognize that he's an academic senior and may be on track to graduate. But that doesn't mean he will finish if he enters the draft. I think it's much more likely he will if he stays another year.

Also, you made a good point about Hernandez and Gronkowski, in arguging that Toilolo should STAY. Those two had great college careers, certainly better than Toilolo. If they only went in rounds 2 and 4, where is Toilolo going to go?

Quite possibly nowhere.

This is a sobering reality Toilolo needs to face.  Not saying whoever put this list together is the end all, be all expert on draft prospect rankings, but there are no secrets in the NFL.  This list of TE prospects should have Toilolo's attention: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/2013/TE

Only the Top 20 TEs are even considered draft-able.  Toilolo isn't even on this list of Top 25 TE prospects.

Re: SKOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVV - pincemob - 01-06-2013

It was reported that Ertz has 3 classes left to graduate, so 1 light quarter basically.  He has had two younger brothers suffer serious injuries, I believe football related.  Signals point to leaving and good for him if he does.

Re: SKOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVV - Cardinal96 - 01-06-2013

If I were Ertz, I would declare.  His draft stock is about as high as it can ever be as a TE.  As mentioned before, Fleener and Gronkowski were both 2nd round TE's.

Toilolo is another story.  His draft position could really benefit from him showing what he can do as the primary TE option.

I agree that Toilolo would benefit from another year, but it's hard for me to believe he's not in the Top 25 TE prospects. If he comes out, I think he will be drafted. And my guess is that if he does come out, it will be because he's getting assurances that he will be drafted. The fact that a list is published on the Internet doesn't mean that it's comprehensive.

Re: SKOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVV - washingtonismoney - 01-06-2013

I think Toilolo will be a third rounder. He's athletic, he's 6'8", he's a nasty blocker and a hard worker. If you're an NFL GM, you love that and the potential and you draft him.
