Guessing Azia Kim is sad she's now the second-most famous fake Stanford student.

Pretty impressive work by the Deadspin journalists. It's amazing how some people double-down on lying and deceit rather than just face up to the truth.

This article makes it seem like Manti's dad was in on it, too.
Quote: The plan was for Kekua to spend extensive time with the whole Te'o family when upwards of 40 of them came to South Bend in mid-November for ND's Senior Day date with Wake Forest.
"They started out as just friends," Brian Te'o said. "Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there. But within the last year, they became a couple.
"And we came to the realization that she could be our daughter-in-law. Sadly, it won't happen now."
About the time Kekua and Manti became a couple, she was injured in an auto accident. There were complications during her recovery. And it was also during her recovery that it was discovered Kekua had leukemia.
"That was just in June," Brian Te'o said. "I remember Manti telling me later she was going to have a bone marrow transplant and, sure enough, that's exactly what happened. From all I knew, she was doing really, really well."
Kekua, who eventually graduated from Stanford, was, in fact, doing so well that she was released from the hospital on Sept. 10. And Brian Te'o was among those congratulating her via telephone.Â

Probably the most eligible male student at ND in decades and he'd rather have a make-believe Stanford girlfriend than date any of the women at ND!
Take heed recruits -- this is what you are destined to if you go to Notre Dame.

I know little about the Te'o family, but I think most families of elite football players are just doing whatever it takes to cash in that golden ticket. I think a lot of them lose the perspective of normal people who just want their kids to grow up and be healthy, contributing members of society. I wouldn't be surprised if they're more concerned with damage control on the baby boy's draft status than worrying about the implications of such a strange series of decisions.

Absolutely incredible... Who would have ever thought that, between Kulabafi and Manti Te'o's girlfriend, Kulabafi turns out to be the more REAL one...? :o
As for next year's LSJUMB halftime show vs. N.D., they might as well just go ahead and put the Band on probation right now...
By the way, if he's forced to give up his Voldemort runner-up spot, is there any way we can get Stepfan in [...or, for that matter, Kulabafi...]?
From the stories being put out by N.D., it sounds like Te'o et al are claiming that they were the unwitting victims of a hoax, as opposed to knowing participants. Pretty hard to believe, but, if true, Te'o has got to be one of the unluckiest persons in the world...the week that Lance Armstrong decides to go on Oprah and come clean is about the worst possible time to ask people to "suspend disbelief."
Re: This has to be the weirdest story I've read (it's about Te'o) -
TreeWeird - 01-16-2013
Domers have issued a statement saying Te'o and family told them they were the "victims" of a hoax on Dec. 26. I'm willing to believe the domers may not have been in on the hoaz before then, but if they and Te'o truly thought Te'0 was victimized, then why not go public with that before now? It would have created even more sympathy for them. One could argue the point, but I think the most logical answer is that they did not think it was credible Te'o was a victim and just hoped it would stay quiet. It also suggests that Te'o realized by 12/26 that deadspin was poking around and the story might come out.
And did that knowledge affect his (non)performance against Alabama?

Manti Te'o released a statement:
"This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.
"To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating.
"It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother's death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life.
"I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been.
"In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was.
"Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I'm looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft."

I challenge anyone to come up with a day in recent history that comes even close to the "Schadenfreude Trifecta" that we hit today.
Chip Kelly's departure [after indicating he was staying] story,
The whole Te'o thing, and
The U.S.C. post-game locker room "non-brawl" story (

all hitting the mainstream press on the same day.
If I were a k.al guy, I'd be really worried for the next few hours...

There are lots of holes in the story that Teo and ND are spinning.
The CBS News story referenced in the Deadspin piece aired in January 2013, which is after when ND says that Teo told the university that the story was a hoax. This means that at the very least, ND allowed CBS to run a story that the university knew to be false. Unless the university somehow wasn't aware that CBS was working on a story (and that's exceedingly difficult to believe).

Why exactly would a stud college football player want to create a lie about having a girlfriend? As we learned in the BCS game from Brent, those football players get the hottest girls.
So why create a mythical girlfriend when real hotties would literally do anything to date him?
What would be the benefits of getting to claim a deep long-distance relationship with a mythical girlfriend?
The answers to those questions might not have played well at Notre Dame. :-X
While it is all fun and games, it does appear true that his grandmother died during the football season. And that remains a sad story, even if it will forever be overwhelmed by this more intriguing side show.
