WBB: What will be our starting team by Pac-12 season? - 81alum - 04-12-2013

Fitzgerald's article is out from behind the firewall now, and there are some interesting tea leaves to read.  And no, I don't think there is anything new on Toni in there.
http://www.sfchronicle.com/collegesports/article/Help-coming-for-Stanford-women-4411342.php

The idea that 3 of next year's entering class could start before the season is over seems to be coming from Tara.  She may be serious, or she may be trying to light a fire under the other players.  I think both may be true.

As for posts, I think it is a safe bet that either Ally Beebe or Erica McCall will start in Jos's former slot.  As for the wing slot, Kailee Johnson may be well suited to it.  But if Beebe gets the 4, it is hard to see Tara not finding a way to start McCall somewhere.  But anyway you cut it, that leaves Ruef and Greenfield and Bonnie Samuelson fighting for time with three new competitors.  As if to emphasize the point, Tara says
Quote:"We need a lot of offseason improvement. We expect to be much more competitive."
Assuming of course that Chiney's slot is set, then when you throw in Tess you have 6 posts competing for the 3 and 4 positions, and frankly neither Greenfield nor B. Samuelson nor Picknell have yet shown themselves able to lock up one of those positions.  Ruef is a different matter, as the article pointed out that she played the end of the season on another stress fracture.  Hard to know what she is capable of--how often have we really seen her healthy?

As for guards, it gets interesting there too.  Toni might be gone--my guess is that no one including Toni knows that yet.  Amber seems to have a position locked up.  But who will anyone step up to claim the Toni/Sara James 2 position?  Sara might--she has been starting, after all.  The article hints that it will be Karlie
Samuelson--assuming Toni can't come back at full strength.
Quote: "Guard Karlie Samuelson isn't as tall as her sister, Bonnie, but is a sharpshooter too and more athletic."
Whenever I read "more athletic" I immediately think "potentially better defender."

At point guard, Tara suggests that Lili Thompson may back up Amber, and keep Amber more rested.  I noticed that lutely nothing was said about Jasmine or Alex.  Of course, that could just be Fitz and not Tara.

There is a chance our starting team at the beginning of Pac 12 play could be dramatically different and dramatically younger.  Here, in order, is how I think things might shake out if the youngsters develop as Tara hints they should.

Beginning of the year
5. Chiney/Picknell
4. Ruef/Beebe/McCall
3. Greenfield/Samuelson/Johnson
2. James/Camp/Green/K. Samuelson
1. Orrange/Thompson

End of the year
5. Chiney/Picknell
4. McCall/Beebe/Ruef
3. Johnson/Greenfield/B.Samuelson
2. K. Samuelson/James/Camp/Green
1. Orrange/Thompson

Tara often experiments by starting a frosh here and there.  Sometimes, as with Toni, it works.  Other times, as with Taylor  and Jasmine they do not persist in a starting role.  But most of the greatest Stanford players did start for four years, so usually Tara figures it out very early.

Ruef was in a walking boot at the awards ceremony last night.  Obviously, she really toughed it out.

Re: WBB: What will be our starting team by Pac-12 season? - WAcard - 04-12-2013

From last season I would say that basically Camp isn't even considered as back up anything, Tara even went with Taylor at the point rather than trust Camp. Green nothing new, don't see anything other than this year.

I have seen Johnson many times, both HS and club and they never played any man defence, she s not a 3 she will have to be in the paint as she would never be able  to hit the 3 or guard on the wing, but to take minutes from our 4 or 5 she will have to get much stronger. She is however the tallest, probably over 6' 4 so if they can get her stronger she will help against tall posts as Erica is shorter than our other posts.

Disagree on Johnson WA having seen her also a number of times. I think she's a 3-4 but do agree needs to be stronger as a 4.  Old news but 2 years ago one site had her as the # 1  2014
With 16 or 17 players lots of competition.

Very odd on the link.  When I Google "Help Coming for Stanford Women" I go right to the Fitzgerald article with no firewall.  When I post the link here and then click on it, I hit the firewall.

You can try the google technique and see if it works.  It is not a long article, most of what is in it is discussed here already.

I googled it and got the one-sentence teaser.

Re: WBB: What will be our starting team by Pac-12 season? - CompSci87 - 04-12-2013

I googled and got a page saying I had been granted free trial access to the article, and it let me read it. This probably works based partly on what page you came from (http referrer). So if you came from Google, you might get access; from elsewhere, no. Same trick that IMDB uses to prevent its images being linked or embedded in another page (such as a post here).

It seems to me that many athletes take a couple of years to fully recover from a major injury. The first year they return they often regress from their pre-injury level and in year two they make noticeable improvement. Shayne Skov and possibly Wayne Lyons are good examples. Jasmine was starting her freshman year before she was injured. She seemed anxious to return last year and seemed to remain anxious on the court. Hopefully, she'll grow and develop during off-season. Same for Alex Green. She is coming back from ACL and a ruptured achilles tendon. I'm looking forward to seeing her on the court - hopefully, fully recovered. Alex was higher rated in her class by HoopGurlz than Bonnie and Karlie Samuelson. We should be quicker and more athletic with better ball handling with them on the court - and as the article says - Amber won't have to carry the entire load.

Ruef and Tinkle were not 3s either, but they played there a lot in prior seasons.  Greenfield was the more natural three but Tara replaced her with Tinkle midway through 2011-12, and Jos gamely worked on her 3 point shot.  In 2010-2011 there were a few games when Ruef was used for some time at the 3.  She took 18 three point shots (not very successfully) as she tried to earn playing time in that awkward (for her) position.

If Tara concludes that Beebe, McCall, and Johnson are able to help the team better than Ruef, Greenfield, and B. Samuelson, then she is going to figure out a way to start a couple of them and play all three for extended minutes.  Of course, a lot can happen as they work out over the summer, and we will have to see how much our returners develope and how advanced our frosh really are.  It should be a fascinating autumn--a great time to enjoy the exhibition games.

Johnson this year in high school was 10/34 from three point range.  Given that she took 244 shots overall that is not a high percentage of three point attempts.  However, she did take a few dozen and seems to have been competent.  There might be something to work with from the wing.  If she can also defend, then 1000 shots a day over the summer and she might become a starter.
