Depth chart for game vs UC Davis -
pcgoode - 08-25-2014
Not too many surprises. I am hoping that by listing Montgomery as starter at WR that he has been medically cleared to play. Can anyone confirm?

Thanks for posting.
Ronnie Harris or Alex Carter listed as starters for left corner is surprising to me. What's up with Carter?

There are some things that look off to me. Cotton is listed as the starter over Hooper, which is very unexpected based on the reports about Hooper. As VFRing noted, Harris is listed as an "or" with Carter, which suggests Carter's injury may still be an issue. Whitfield is listed as backing up Richards (not Olugbode), which seems like a diminished role compared with the recent report that he'd share time equally with Olugbode. Hemschoot is listed as an OLB rather than an ILB. I suspect that he's slightly behind D.avis and Palma for the two-deep at ILB and that Shaw justed wanted to make sure he appeared on a two-deep because he's too good to omit.Â

I know Carter had a lower body injury (hip?), and I wonder if he is fully recovered yet.

Most surprising absence: I'm a little surprised Christian McCaffrey isn't listed as a back-up returner. Despite praise for the guy, maybe the staff is considering a redshirt?
Most surprising name: Casey Tucker. Being listed doesn't guarantee he'll play as a true frosh, but it's a strong sign the guy has a bright, bright future.

I believe Hooper is the so-called Y tight end - more blocking oriented, whereas Cotton will be relied on more for his receiving skills. Think of the way Toilolo and Ertz were used a couple of seasons ago. I wonder if that has something to do with it.

There's some speculation on Twitter that the
Carter -Or- Harris safeties two-deep designation just signals that
Harris Hoffpauir is considered a starter at the nickel back position, fwiw.
EDIT: Looks like I misread Twitter. I'm surprised that Hoffpauir is considered a nickel guy, but I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Also remember that David Shaw doesn't really believe in "starters". The answer to these questions might be as simple as "That's the play we want to run first" and "The defensive personnel depend on what formation they start out with".

Those weights look outdated. Kyle Murphy listed at 272 contradicts the official roster that has him at 298. Some other inconsistencies too.
I would have thought HoffPauir was a SS and Whitfield a FS. Doesn't really much matter much these days, but Hoffpauir seems much more of a run stopper than Whitfield, and Whitfield more the centerfield type. I'm sure Akina knows what he's doing, however!

I think the coaches were busy and had a grad assistant put this together with the thought of playing with the minds of the $C coaches. Either that or they think against the school that shall remained unnamed it won't matter what the depth chart reads.

Weirdest thing to me is Whitfield being listed at SS instead of FS. Since the staff has often said that the safeties are interchangeable this could just be a further emphasis of that.
My only further speculation would be that Hoffpaur has been extremely impressive since returning for baseball and this is nothing against Whitfield (though it would probably make sense for them to be switched since Whitfield seems more like a FS and Hoffpaur like a SS)

So Young is the clear #1 and then Sanders/Seale/Wright are the next tier?

How about comparing the current depth chart with the starters predicted by Go Mighty Card--over two years ago!
http://www.gomightycard.com/2012/06/what-the-new-playoff-system-means-for-stanford-football.html
Quote:Quarterback: Brett Nottingham, RS Sr.
Running backs: Kelsey Young, Sr.; Barry J. Sanders, Jr.; Remound Wright, Sr.
Wide receivers: Ty Montgomery, Sr.; Kodi Whitfield, Jr.; Francis Owusu, So.
Offensive line: Andrus Peat, Jr; Josh Garnett, Jr.; Kyle Murphy, Jr.; Nick Davidson, Jr.; Graham Shuler, Jr.
Defensive line: Aziz Shittu, Jr.; Jordan Watkins, Jr.; Luke Kaumatule, Jr.
Linebackers: AJ Tarpley, RS Sr.; James Vaughters, Sr.; Noor D-a-v-i-s, Jr.
Defensive backs: Wayne Lyons, RS Sr.; Alex Carter, Jr.; Zach Hoffpauir, Jr.
The biggest whiff would be missing out on Hogan at QB, but I'm pretty sure that each one of us would have whiffed on that one (even the coaching staff for the first part of 2012). There are some other notables missing (e.g. Jordan Richards, Henry Anderson, Cajuste and Rector), but it's hard enough to predict the upcoming season, and it is nearly insane to predict two seasons ahead.
All in all, GMC did a fine job of prognosticating. I can't wait for GMC's projected depth chart for 2016!

Talk about names! I feel bad for "Noor the team that shall not be mentioned".
Can we replace that auto-correct?

Good catch, stupac2! I did a manual override of the auto-correct for Noor's last name.
Maybe after Saturday's game we can eliminate that particular auto-correct for good?

I'm kind of nervous he'll get injured, to be honest. Irrational on my part, I know.
Also, I vote that the D-a-v-i-s autocorrect be retired if Stanford beats them this weekend.

Looking at USC's depth chart for their game with Fresno State, the two-deep features 9 true freshmen and 2 redshirt freshmen. That might work for Kentucky basketball, but it seems like a recipe for disaster in Pac-12 football

Yeah, especially if Noor Da.vis makes a contribution to the win that folks want to talk about.
