Looking forward to to seeing someone explain to me what happened at halftime. I’m exhausted but elated like the rest of us.


Hard to explain.  But the game went from almost certainly 31-7 and a blowout to 24-14 in the span of three plays.  Basically, an Oregon receiver's touchdown was called back when on replay his foot touched the pylon.  No big deal, Oregon gets first and goal on the one.  Except Oregon fumbles the exchange (but Herbert recovers) and it's now 2nd and goal from the 8 or so.  Oregon gets a second down run to the four so they are third and goal.  The ensuing snap goes over Herbert's head, Alfieri picks it up and runs it back for a touchdown.

On the ensuing drive, our defense stops the Ducks for the first time all game three and out.  On our ensuing drive, Costello hits Parkinson and then Irwin to take us down to the Oregon 22.  Then on first and ten, we line up in the heavy formation, I sigh because I figure the run will be cut down for a short gain, Love gets the ball, cuts in front of Wilson who is pulling instead of waiting for the block, and he's gone, the game is 24-21 and Stanford is back in business.

Thanks, I was watching but it is most helpful to have it laid out like this. I wonder what kind of halftime adjustments were made because both the O and D looked like different teams.

I wholeheartedly agree. You could tell he'd felt the sting of all those losses to a better coached team.

That is the most improbable win I can remember.  I am elated.  I nearly stopped watching by halftime since I was so depressed, but I stuck with it and our boys rewarded the loyal fans with a thrilling, seemingly impossible win.


I am so glad we won, but mystified that we were able to do it without fixing the problem with our running game.  Notre Dame, here we come.  How tall are their defensive backs ;)

Stunning game. Several Stanford players stepped up to make great plays, when combined with some nonsense mistakes by Oregon, made for a very memorable Stanford victory.

To be honest, I don't think we changed a whole hell of a lot.  Oregon made a few  boneheaded mistakes: a bad snap on third and ten that took them out of field goal range, then the bad snap that led to the scoop and score, and a freshman running back who should have known that in that situation, the only thing he could have done wrong would have been to fumble the ball.

We did have a couple stops on defense, Adebo forcing a pass incompletion on third down (one of only two Herbert missed during regulation) and Fox finally sacking him on the next drive.

On offense, we passed more, but that was mostly out of necessity.

Herbstreit during the game and Husak at halftime we're puzzled by the lack of play action and lack of misdirection by our offense. Herbstreit even commented on Oregon's ability to use the pass to set up the run (wasn't that a Bill Walsh staple?). We have some amazingly gifted kids at TE and WR that present unstoppable mismatches for the defense.

They're like Krakens! Release them!

In turn, that will open up Love, too.

Did Antoine get hurt? Former walk-on Noah Williams was playing safety the last couple of series.  I hope we get at least one of Edwards, Simmons or Antoine back for Notre Dame.

We have run very few play action passes the last couple years.  Since Shaw used to love them with Kevin Hogan as our quarterback, I can only believe that he doesn't think our line can hold the pass rush long enough or that Costello can execute the fake well enough.

It's one of my favorite plays, but CTCard has posted a few of its weeknesses.

If so, it turned out to be a fortunate turn. Williams caused the last-minute fumble. Will be a life-long memory for him.

I'm not up on this as most, though I keep hearing that the new O'line coach is great on pass blocking and that's why our running blocking has suffered.

Herbert is terrific. And tonight, KJ Costello came of age. He was tremendous. In a hostile environment. He made a lot of great throws while under quite a bit of pressure.

Maybe the most unlikely Stanford win I’ve seen.

Our OL needs work.  Four games in and the new OL coach is not acquitting himself well.  Heck, Lance Anderson should be questioned for rushing four defenders against an Alabama-esque OL (hey Oregon just hired Bama's OL coach).  We fared better rushing five in the 2H blitzing the run gaps and also pressuring Herbert.  Our DBs were giving a lot of cushion to those Oregon receivers, and they carved us up underneath.

I think in OT, the compressed field helped us a lot and neutralized Oregon's speed advantage.  Adebo was picked on in that last OT Oregon possession, and he came up big with three defensive plays.  

But Stanford won, and the watch party here was loud and proud through the second half as the team found a way to win.  Amazing, gritty effort.  Let's hope they start each subsequent game with that kind of intensity.

Stanford won!!!  (Still can't believe it)

Yes, Adebo was picked on a lot.  But man, on a night when Herbert had 7 incompletions, Adebo had 4 pass break-ups, including some money ones in overtime.
