I think it is safe to say that none of those guys will be on Zaidi’s shopping list.  Giving up draft choices is not the way he does business.

Even in non covid depressed market times, I don't see how a QO (even with draft compensation) to Gausman makes sense.  Admittedly,  i haven't followed him this past year,  but he was basically a journeyman with some unrealized upside.   When I first saw he was on the list,  I was thinking he should accept the offer ASAP.  Is he someone that could be a #2 starter on a pre-expanded playoffs team?  Charlie Morton just had his $15M option declined.  He was much better than Gausman when he signed 2 years $30M 2 years ago in a normal market. 

I guess the money they saved on Pillar is finally being repurposed. =)

Gausman has big league, starting stuff.  The Giants are low on that, imo.  Sign him - if not crazy number of years.  Cueto, Smyly, Gausman would not be an awful core to a starting rotation . . . in fact, I'd say that's pretty good.

I’d go after LeMahieu hard. Great player.  Gold glove level second baseman that can play first and I suspect third. Led both leagues in hitting.  High contact guy with some power. Of that list, he’s the one I’d target.  Springer also. Although I think DJ would cost quite a bit less.

Still think it was a no brainer for Gausman to accept and a head scratcher for the Giants to offer.  

Given the depressed revenue this past season and in the near future, this year's free agency is going to be uglier than normal.

If he'd had enough innings to qualify, Gausman would have had the 10th best WHIP in the league.

He has the chance to be very good.  Glad they kept him. Their rotation is iffy to say the least. He helps. Now, work with him to stretch his starts. He doesn’t need to try to strike everyone out. Only Nolan Ryan could do that and go deep into games. A physical freak.

Great! We gave up our season ticks for next year but remain brobdingnagian fans. KG was often unhittable for 4 innings. Then stamina, and/or injury would limit. Hopefully, he can stretch out to 7 innings on a regular basis.

Stats bear that out.  Innings 1-3, hitters hit .160 against him.  Innings 4-6, hitters hit .278 with .845 OPS.  more to the point, he was unhittable the first plate appearance, pretty good the second plate appearance, third plate appearance he got smacked around.

Exactly. Small sample size.  Not saying the Giants should have discarded him.   But they probably could have signed him for a few million less. Money that could have gone to one of the bigger free agents.  If they get outbid by a few million they can look back to the QO.

BTW, Gausman had similar stats in the second half of 2018 with the Braves.  But then fell apart in 2019.  Obviously if he can repeat his 2020 performance,  he'll have earned his contract,  but just seems like the Giants could have had a better deal.

No bio of Ryan is complete without mentioning that he is the all-time leader in no-hitters, with 7.  That's an incredible 3 more than the next best guy, Sandy Koufax.  He is also tied for the record for one-hitters with Bob Feller (12) and has 18 two-hitters.  That's 37 games allowing two or fewer hits, which is more than a season's worth.  Add in his 31 three-hitters, and he's pitched two season's worth of games allowing three or fewer hits.

As you noted, he played well into his forties, and is one of 29 players to have appeared in four different decades.  He also has a no-hitter in three different decades, and is one of five pitchers to have two no-hitters in a single season (trivia: can you name the other four?)
