After last night's entertaining victory/debacle, SF is still first in the NL at 18-12.  On track to win 97.  Giants now 12th (18th last week) in OPS (.720) and 13th in runs scored in MLB.  4th in ERA (3.26) and 5th in WHIP (1.13) in MLB.

18 runs in 14 innings will help the stats.

Man, Wisler is one special pitcher.

If they want to be serious then they need to deal for a closer. Belt and a legit prospect for who?

Can’t get a closer type till deadline.  Then we will know better where they are.  And they would have to deal prospects. Not likely to happen.

Maybe Rogers can close.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Phogge - 05-06-2021

Lex, they may be out of it by deadline if they can’t find one. They have already lost a few game in the new season because various guys couldn’t close. And pitch selection beat Doval the other night. Blackman could hardly make contact on the heater and they kept calling slider so finally Doval put one on a platter. Look at a replay.

I’m convinced that whatever Belt’s stats are in 2021 he will be considerly worse next year. Time to deal. In hindsight Mick was right about Bumgarner.

Torture but McGee stuck out the side for the Save. 5-4 win on Slater’s HR. Posey hit his 8th HR

Stanford's own Austin Slater is (I hope) breaking out of his slump.  Going into the HR at bat he was 0 for 10 and 3 for his past 25.  He was 1 for 2 with two walks and three runs scored and a stolen base.  When he's on, he's really, really on.

Posey leads all catchers with 8 HRs and a 1.231 OPS. He's played in 21 of the Giants' 32 games, so they seem to be keeping him fresh. Crawford, Longoria #7 in OPS, Belt #11. Yaz (#13) and Tauchman (#23) are doing well in MLB OPS, all others struggling.

Giants team OPS (.719) is now #11 in MLB, way up from the #27 10 days ago. #5 in HRs, but #15 in runs scored. Pitching now #7 in ERA (3.38) and #5 in WHIP (1.13)

McGee got the save, but WOW was that a two-point landing.  He threw 25 pitches (11 balls) to the #6, 7, 8 and 9 hitters.  Walked the first guy and went to three balls on most counts with the high pitches really high -- and the called third strike on the last batter was a super generous pitcher's strike on a 3-2 count.  Struck out the rest.  Rogers, on the other hand, faced the #3, #4 and #5 hitters, didn't strike any of them out but set the side down in 14 pitches.

Agree on Doval to Blackmon. You throw 100 you have to use it. He threw more fastballs last night. It wasn’t pretty but he had a clean inning.

Trading for a closer is a crapshoot. Look at Melancon. He was one of the best relievers in the NL from about ‘13-‘16. Then he comes to the Giants in ‘17 and from game 1, literally, was a bust. Farhan trades him in 19 and gets high praise for doing so. Now look at Melancon. Once again one of the top closers in the league. Still it was the right thing to trade him. We will see if Tristan Beck helps down the line.

They inevitably break down for a bit. Almost all of them. You don’t want to trade for that guy. Melancon was hurt much of the time he was with SF. Now he’s healthy again.

So who is out there and who do you have to give up. My guess- not much and too much.

BTW, Bum has pitched very well the last 5 times out. Got off to hoffific start but looks to be getting it together. Last 5 starts. 29 IP. 10 hits. 4 runs.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Mick - 05-09-2021

7-1 win by Giants (20-13), now 2.5 games ahead of the Dodgers and Padres.  Slater homered for the second game in a row, went 2 for 2 yesterday.  Only weakness in Slater's and Yastrzemski's game are those mustaches.

Odd stat: After decades of marginal running skills (last in steals in the National League in both 2010 and 2014), the Giants are 4th in MLB in stolen base percentage (16 steals in 19 attempts, 84.2%).  Stanford's own Austin Slater has 6 steals in 6 attempts this year, he's 22 for 23 in his career.  Tied for 8th in MLB this year.

The Athletic currently ranks the SF 49ers as the 7th most powerful NFL team.  Thinks they'll bounce back for three reasons semi-out of 49er control:
1) They had the third worst turnover ratio.
2) They had the most injuries in the league.
3) They faced the third toughest schedule.  Supposedly, the Niners have the easiest schedule this year.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Phogge - 05-10-2021

They still need a tall red zone receiver. Someone like Jalen Hurd. LOL. At least they don't throw three straight fades.

The Giants are competing with the Niners for national most injured players award.

And Crimson, Pelosi being from Baltimore is rooting for SF native Gus Triandos to win the AL MVP. However still dead.

Per the Strength of  Schedule rankings, based on 2020 results, the Eagles have the easiest schedule (SF is tied for 19th).

They are in the toughest division. That is outside of the SEC West.

My source was Sheil Kapadia, The Athletic, today's column on NFL power ranking.  Here's the link:

Here's the quote: "This year, if we go by projected win totals from the betting markets, the 49ers have the NFL’s easiest schedule. "

RIP Former Stanford and Yankee 3B Bobby Brown at 96. He was the AL President and served in WW2 and the Korean War

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Mick - 05-10-2021

Giants beat Rangers 3-1.  They are now 21-14, 13-4 at home. On pace to win 97 games.  Alex Wood got the win, he is 4-0. Kapler subbed in three pinch hitters in a row -- all three reached base (Slater/Walk; Ruf/Single; Dubon/single). Dubon's single scored Slater with the go ahead run.

Giants have the fewest errors in the majors with 10.  Next is Houston with 13.  Their average WAR by position is 3.5, best in majors (Boston 2nd best at 2.9).
