Another crucial stat for us is that we went 11 for 12 from the free throw line. We needed each of those makes. When Lacie made 1 of 2 to start the game, I thought it was going to be another game where we shoot around 50% from the FT line. Lexie was clutch, hitting 8/8. I hope that continues for one more game.

I have to laugh at us, the only fan base looking to find ways the refs helped us. They missed some, as always but overall I think the bad calls balanced out. Jones was spectacular. Lexie missed too many layups but everything else she did was gritty and very, very good. SC played tough defense. I think this was simply a tough game against an excellent team, and if we had lost, it would have not been due to bad play but good play by SC. Those last second shots on the run under extreme pressure are not so easy. Almost gave me a heart attack. Glad it was a W, that's all that matters and that everyone is healthy for Sunday.

Today Stanford beat Dawn Staley and her South Carolina team (Staley is now coaching instead of playing) in the national semifinals. The score was 66-65.
And in her presser, Staley said she hoped Tara would win more national championships--but not at her expense like 1992. Well, we need to win one more game to realize Staley's worst fears.

Yep. If Lexie doesn’t hustle back, it’s an uncontested layup. Of course, “if Lexie doesn’t hustle” is the equivalent of “if the earth stops rotating.”
Ouch Haley. 2 bad errors within a minute but then the game winner. I think we’re in for another exciting 2 years, LOL.

I might be wrong, but didn't men's wrestling win a national championship recently? Or does that not count?

UConn went on a 5 point run and did outscore Arizona in the third.

An wrestler won the individual title in his weight class, but as a team we didn't win the title.

If you want a piece of history repeating itself....in 1992.... Stanford beat Dawn Staley’s Virginia en route to the Championship game. The score in that game? 66-65.

I can still remember Dawn running up and down the sidelines at the end of the game pleading with the refs over a call that went Stanford's way

I've been a big fan of Rebecca Lobo's commentary in this tourney. However, tonight in our game I felt she showed bias toward SC. Perhaps she has a close relationship with Dawn or something. It bothered me that she and that guy kept going on and on about how great SC was playing, how good this SC player was doing, yada yada yada.
For instance, it is not a kicked ball when the ball inadvertently contacts a defender's foot. Both commentators claimed that the refs clearly blew that call on Lexie. But, it looked to me that Lexie never intended to kick the ball.

Agree. I also thought that the defender needed to purposefully kick the ball for it to be called. I thought I saw that Lexie kicked the ball as she was moving to get into defensive position. So, yes, she kicked it, but I don't think it was deliberate.

Per the announcers, I don't think the kicked ball has to be deliberate. It just doesn't count as a kicked ball if the player with the ball throws it into a defender's foot.

According to the NBA (Is it different in the NCAA?):
What is the Official NBA “Kick Ball” Rule in Basketball?
[*]A player shall not
kick the
ball or strike it with the fist.
[*]
Kicking the
ball or striking it with any part of the leg is a violation when it is an intentional act. The
ball accidentally striking the foot, the leg or fist is not a violation.

On this one, the player with the ball dribbled it off the defender's foot. Although Lexie's foot was moving, I still didn't think it was a kicked ball. The slo-mo replay was misleading (as they often are) by making it look like Lexie had time to see the ball coming and deliberately kick it.
Plus the announcers were misleading (as they often are) by trying to be amateur refs who can overrule the real refs.

Yeah, that's what the announcers said, but they were wrong as best I can tell (the NCAA publication page is offline so I can't download the rulebook). But everything I've seen, including the recent change to the shot clock after a kicked ball, is that the ball has to be intentionally kicked. See, for example:
https://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/shot-clock-rule-altered-women-s-basketball
Quote:Also, when the shot clock is below 20 seconds, it will reset to 20 seconds when the defensive team commits a single personal foul or when the ball is intentionally kicked or hit with a fist in the offensive team’s frontcourt. When the shot clock is at 20 seconds or above, it will not be reset in these situations.
I suppose it is possible that an inadvertent kick would result in a different outcome.

I don’t watch a lot of women’s basketball so I don’t know how the rule is generally applied, but in the men’s game and the NBA that’s a dead ball situation 9 times out of 10. As others have noted, under the letter of the law the ball has to be intentionally kicked to result in a whistle. Similar to traveling, how the rule is written and how it’s applied don’t always match up. I believe the disconnect is what led to the confusion on the broadcast.
