News on what the Alliance might mean for football scheduling.

1. Work with ESPN and Fox to allow 8 conference games instead of 9
2. Each school in the Alliance plays one home and one away non-conference game each year vs. other Alliance members

Perhaps it is time to rethink the North-South divisional alignment if we're actually going to go down to 8 conference games.

Unfortunately that gives Oregon a pretty sure shot at the conference championship. The "new guys" are more than a bit weaker IMHO. This obviously can and will change over time, but for right now I think it is true.

ND could count as an Alliance game because of their ACC alignment.

Very underwhelmed. No one cares if every PAC team takes part in Alliance scheduling. Division winners from the previous year should play division winners from other conferences, no home-and-home requirement.

Oregon State vs Penn State in any random year does very little to nothing.

Flex scheduling in season would be difficult, but it is definitely a possibility to explore (current div. leaders play each other in season, with other matchups made based on current standings).

I am certain ND would count as an Alliance game.  In addition, I believe an eight game conference schedule would result in the elimination of the requirement that Stanford and Cal play USC and UCLA annually unless there is a realignment of the conference divisions.

Instead of two divisions, you could have three:

CA: Stanford, Cal, USC, UCLA
NW: Oregon, OSU, Washington, WSU
Mountain: Arizona, ASU, Colorado, Utah

Each team plays the three others in their division, a home/away from each other division plus one "bonus" game.  The top two division winners play each other in the conference championship.

FWIW, when Utah/Colorado joined, part of the deal was that they would be able to play USC/UCLA every year which is why they are in the south. Not sure if that's still in play with any future moves.

You could, in theory, continue that.  Every year, the CA-Mountain pairup would be as follows:
Stanford/Cal get UofA/ASU
USC/UCLA get Colorado/Utah

This would enable us (and Cal) to pretend like we were still in the Pac-10, plus we would get to avoid Utah, which has been a bit our bugaboo since they joined.

Well if the Big 12 had poached 4 teams from the B1G, then both conferences would have had the correct number of teams as indicated by their names.
