Nobody ever said that being a Stanford fan was easy.

Some stats…
We were outgained 440-28 in the first half, the second worst yardage discrepancy at halftime in seven years. This was the worst loss since going down 57-7 in 2003.  We gave up three 100-yard rushers… the first time it has happened in the PAC-12 since 2017.  It was the most yards rushing we’ve given p in Shaw’s tenure.

BC

Yeah, this one even topped the 44-6 2016 Washington thrashing as a game in which we were totally dominated in all aspects. And it was at home.

After 2 possessions you could see that the team had mailed this game in from the locker room.  I saw all the Cactus Jack games as a student, and he had some awful games in that winless season, but I never thought the team had simply mailed the game in before it was played.  It was clear the game was over early.
It will be a major challenge to win any of the remaining games.  I am assuming  that no matter how bad Shaw is, the University is NOT going to let him go.  That doesn't prevent them from telling him to recycle his coaching staff, top to bottom.  If he says no, then they have a reason to let him go.
I like Shaw and believe he is a fine individual and a credit to the University, but he seems unwilling to make the hard decision to let people go whom he is close to.

My darkest thought: it’s actually fortunate Stanford doesn’t play Arizona.

Getting blown out by a good team is one thing. I couldn’t take a loss to Arizona.

Then again, it might be our one chance at getting another conference victory.

Wonder if the players don’t care. And why isn’t Sam McF posting anymore. Could be that Shaw has lost the team.

Well, one thing is for sure. Shaw has lost a lot of the team,....due to injury.

RE: Stanford vs Utah Game Thread - Softball Fan - 11-06-2021

I don't follow football that closely so I don't have an opinion about Shaw (seems like a nice guy in interviews) or the players.  However when I saw how empty the stands were I thought this is embarrassing to Stanford.

It might be better for Stanford to focus on academics and do away with football.  Just have club sports or start a new west coast conference modeled after the Ivy League.

RE: Stanford vs Utah Game Thread - BostonCard - 11-06-2021

The lack of fundamentals: tackling, blocking, even just being in the right place at the right time, is just shockingly bad.

Well, we have considered that in the past and decided to stick with D-1 football. Taking the big picture into account we have done OK. Let's not overreact to a extraordinary bad loss.

What, exactly, should be considered an overreaction given the catastrophic humiliation the $7M per year David Shaw produced Friday night?

Actually the loss was not the catalyst for my comment.  I'm not that much of a football fan.  I don't get excited when the team wins.  I don't get frustrated when the team loses.  It was the meager number of fans in the stadium.  If there isn't much of a following by alums, the surrounding community, and particularly the students, maybe going in a different direction should be considered.

I understand this is a thread basically for hard core Stanford football fans and there is a lot of frustration.  Stanford did have one really good victory this season so I recognize sports teams have their ups and downs.

The idea that we should give up football, or at least relegate it to the club level or join an Ivy League type Conference.
Do you think it should be considered?

RE: Embarrassing Loss 52- 7 - PVTree - 11-06-2021

I attended the game and stayed to the bitter end. I doubt attendance was more than 10k.

From the first drive, it was easy to tell it was not going to be our night. Utah tan for 8+ yards per rush. When they needed to pass, their QB had plenty of time to pick an open receiver.

My group began to consider a play for no loss by us as a win. A first down was a big deal as we were unable to move the ball. I thought we were heading for a 30 point loss (didn't think we would get there by halftime).

We started going for small victories such as not getting shutout (yay, we accomplished that!) and we outscored the Utes in the 3rd quarter (7-0). At the end, we were hoping for Patu to get in the game (couldn't do worse) and we got to see it.

Completely disheartening game. We were badly beaten in every phase of the game. We started getting chippy (a couple of near fights). Seeing McKee on a crutch makes it hard to believe he will be ready for the River Rodents. In that case, I'm all for starting Patu to see what he can do. West is not a Division 1 QB. He's proven that everytime he gets on the field. Sanders is strictly a running QB. No choice but to go with Patu.

Only bright side that comes to mind is that it was easy to park and get out after the game.

If you would rather feel sorry for a team we dominate rather than feel sorry for ourselves, come to the WBB exhibition today at noon, and watch the defending national champions take on a team from a small liberal arts college.

In fact, I have never transferred my enthusiasm so quickly and so completely from football to WBB as I have this year.  Usually the two sports divide my attention for a while.  Now, other than Big Game.....

If you really want to get disheartened about the upcoming game with OSU, consider the fact they beat Utah in Corvallis a couple of weeks ago.
I realize comparative scores don't mean much (especially in the Pac-12 this year), but still...

RE: Embarrassing Loss 52- 7 - Phogge - 11-06-2021

Don't give up football just play a small school schedule like the Ivies. Just 10 games, no playoff possibilities. Problem, are there enough D2 schools in the West where you can get anywhere in two hours?

If not then end the Notre Dame relationship. They are much too good for Stanford. Do a home/home with Sac. St. Get the Spartans back into the stadium. Play Cal Poly every year and play some games in SLO (great town).

Probably because the experience of playing behind an OL that is destroyed on every play may cause him to enter the portal.

Keeping him on the bench while West stinks up the field will more likely drive him to the portal.

Only if the play we called was saying the entire team had tested positive for COVID and we just forfeit the game.
