Phogge, I think some reporters did ask the question, or at least one like it. They didn't ask "Did your father tell Harbaugh that you should redshirt no matter what and veto burning the shirt." They did ask Andrew for comments about the decision to redshirt and that is where he made the comments that the OP referenced. I believe this was actually asked twice that I know of.

You seem to believe that Oliver Luck dictated the outcome. You may have information to that effect that the rest of us don't. I for one find it improbable that Harballs would allow anybody, other than himself, to decide who redshirts and who doesn't. He may (or may not) listen to other peoples thoughts on the subject, but he would never be dictated to IMHO.

I am pretty sure that if Harbaugh was convinced Luck would help the team "significantly", Luck would have been playing. I also take Andrew Luck at his word that he told Harbaugh "He hadn't earned it". I am also pretty sure that Harbaugh didn't care what Luck thought he had "earned". I think Andrew was being politically correct, but he let Harbaugh know that he (Andrew) didn't like the idea. That may have affected Harbaugh's thinking. If a guy doesn't jump at the chance to play, maybe it isn't a good idea. What Andrew's reasons actually were will remain unknowable, because he isn't saying. It seems more reasonable to me that is anybody's opinion mattered to Harbaugh, it would be Andrew Luck's, which we know, as opposed to Oliver lucks, which we do not.

Not a great thread to have this discussion, but as a casual Harbaugh watcher I feel that *since* the year in question, Harbs has been *very* aggressive in promoting more inexperienced QBs over established starters (see this year’s Michigan team and also go back to Kap over Alex Smith).

Carl is heavy and appearing on talk shows. Bob writes books. It takes an incredible amount of energy to investigate a story especially with the wrong turns and long stakeouts involved. A young person's game.

Today's CBS is nothing like the old CBS. And there is nobody alive remotely close to Don Hewitt.

Really? Last  year's team that had the same "inexperienced" QB available started Cade McNamara all year despite some significant pushback from the pundits. McNamara also started the first game this year, although arguably that was a "courtesy". I think there is no question Harbaugh values McNamara's intangibles more than the fans do, but eventually talent will tell. In a way it is (IMHO) eerily similar to Pritchard-Luck, except McNamara had a much better defense behind him :-).

It is also IMHO important to note that Harbaugh did not start Kap "over" Smith. Smith was out injured. Kap performed well and Smith didn't get the job back. Lots easier to justify the decision when you were forced to do the experiment.

I apologize if my remarks go over the top. I would say that the biggest complaint during the 2008 season at the tailgate was the play of Pritchard and the non use of Andrew. I probably should just let it go.

As for journalism I worked with some of the best investigative reporters in the biz. Brian Ross was a bulldog when he was at NBC working with Ira Silverman. Brian has gone off the rails at ABC but his Segment 3 team did some great work and we brought down some crooks. Of course he also put his crew in physical situations at times where it could have been the end.

I can't watch Fox, CNN and MSNBC. What they talk about would have been labeled as "This is an editorial" back in my news days. Good reporters are few and far between now with the best at NPR not making enough money. I follow Michael Sullivan in South East Asia, Ron Elving (Sp?) in DC and Scott Schaefer in Sacramento.

I really miss working with Mike Wallace. That man really got the juices flowing.

On this I also agree. Interestingly, Ron Elving and I both lived in Cedro for the 1967-68 school year.

Walk-On Union Watch. Four non-scholarship players got PT against Oregon State. No statistics were recorded in the game unless noted. In addition...
Frosh Force. Six true freshmen played against the Rodents, including two debuts. None recorded any statistics unless noted. As this was the fifth game played, several freshmen who have played in every game thus far had their redshirt officially burned.
Bench Bunch. The following non-injured non-frosh scholarship players did not appear against the Beavers.
M*A*S*H Unit. The following players did not appear against OSU due to injury. I am basing this on both official reports and reporting done by Cardboarders. Please do correct me if I am wrong.

If we ignore the depth chart and go with what Shaw said, Rouse and Rogers are doubtful/out for Saturday.  McLaughlin and Miller are still out and do not even appear on the depth chart.  Hinton is likely back. 

It is unclear whether Hinton will play RT or LT, but let's assume he plays LT to relieve some pressure from Leyrer.  In this case, our likely starters from left to right will be:

Hinton (or Leyrer)
Hornibrook
Nugent
Metcalf
Leyrer (or Hinton)


Shaw's explanation of all of this in the press conference was a bit like "who's on first,"  but I think I interpreted it correctly.  Bottom line - it's a bit of a mess, unfortunately.

Though Metcalf didn't even play last week... They may have to go with Berzins (a walk-on) at guard. Fisher Anderson, a freshman, has also seen PT.

Does anyone know if Miller, Metcalf, and/or Farrell were injured last week? Totally possible that Farrell was simply a DNP-CD, but surprised at Miller, and Metcalf has not played in a couple of games, which is odd.

Miller has been injured for two weeks.  He was injured on the third play of the Washington game.  It looked pretty bad - he was carted off.  However, Shaw has not suggested that it is season-ending.  He strangely announced that Miller was questionable for last Saturday's game, but he's below doubtful and not even on the depth chart for this Saturday's game.  Maybe it's a high ankle sprain and/or he experienced a setback.

Shaw was fairly definitive on Tuesday that Metcalf would be getting a start this Saturday.  He's had a great camp and prepared himself at both Center and Guard... yada yada.  The only scenario where he doesn't start is if Rogers can play, which sounded doubtful.  I know that Metcalf was dealing with a lower-leg / ankle issue because I saw him go down at the open practice, two weeks before the season started.  He spent about half an hour on the trainer's table.

Shaw was asked specifically about Farrell, and the answer was a euphemistic version of DNP-CD.  Not injured.

At this Saturday's game, Farrell was not in pads. But it's still not clear to me that he's hurt, and when last asked, Shaw said that Farrell remained ready to help if called upon. If he were healthy, wouldn't we now want him returning punts, with Filkins out?  Do we plan to have Barrow return both punts and kicks, while being our only remaining healthy scholarship RB?

Farrell may be looking to transfer after the season, or he may just be looking to retain eligibility.

It appears he might have been a backup option at punt returner, too. Will Barrow return both kicks and punts this Saturday? This week's depth chart still lists Filkins at PR, which is obviously wrong.

Thanks for the info.  Hey, the guy had 3 stars with an 86 rating.  He was MVP of his league. We did well to get him without a scholarship, and maybe he’ll earn one when all is said and done. 

One good thing - Stanford punches above its weight with walk-ons.  Quite possibly, two of them are starting this Saturday at RB and PR, along with a third that was a former walk-on (Tremayne).

I’ll be rooting for that kid Thompson, if we see him again. #26 for those keeping track.
