Utah just beat Arizona 80-79. Made 2 free throws after an Ariz foul with 1 second to go when Az up by 1,, dumb unforced error that cost Az the game

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - 81alum - 01-15-2023

Utah defeats Arizona by 1 point, 80-79, in the most exciting game of the year.

Utah was ahead 78-75 with 11 seconds left, but allowed Arizona to score two quick baskets after they could not inbound the ball.

With Arizona ahead 79-78, and 1.3 seconds left, Utah got to to Pili who was fouled, and sank both free throws for the win.

Three of the Arizona starters and 1 of the Utah starters fouled out.  It seems the Arizona pressure defense does not work so well when the refs call it close.

Arizona drops both games on the mountain trip.  We get to make that trip on the last weekend of regular Pac 12 play.

Meanwhile Cal is giving UCLA a game...leading deep in the third quarter.

Azzi Fudd for UConn reinjured her right knee and will miss  time. They did not give a timeline and I read she doesn’t have a tear. She’s been injury prone and UConn has Tennessee and South Carolina games upcoming.

But will they have enough players?

Fudd played on Jan 11 (20 min) and Jan 15 (12 min), but not on Jan 17, where only 7 players are in the box score.
Hmm... The game on Jan. 17 was rescheduled from Jan. 19, but I don't see the reason.
The postponed Jan. 8 game is scheduled for Jan 23.

Also, if you are interested....

Explanation on the UConn vs Seton Hall game date change: https://www.theuconnblog.com/2023/1/10/23548740/uconn-huskies-womens-basketball-vs-depaul-rescheduled-for-jan-23-seton-hall-game-moved

Azzi Fudd sustained the knee injury the first time in the Dec 4 game versus Notre Dame.  She returned to the court Jan 11 against St. Johns.  She reinjured the knee in UConn's next game Jan 15 against Georgetown when she collided with another player.  The team announced today that Fudd will miss at least the next two weeks.

Really a tough break for Azzi and UConn.  She began receiving mentions as a player of the year candidate once she got going earlier this season.

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - DaBears17 - 01-20-2023

They have 7 mostly healthy players.  Caroline Ducharme and Ayanna Patterson are in concussion protocol.

Ducharme has a history of “head injuries”.  She seemed to have a stiff neck before the concussion since the beginning of the season.

Edwards was questionable for the game they postponed and the Big East allows teams to postpone games due to having less than 7 players available without restricting it to be Covid related.

Geno said today Ducharme and Fudd are out for tomorrow. Patterson is a game time decision.

Sounds like Fudd does not need surgery, but needs to stay off the knee for at least two weeks.

Washington 27 to 18 over UCLA halftime

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - martyup - 01-20-2023

Stanford is ranked #4 and has beat two top 10 teams and took #1 SC to overtime.  They also have beat teams ranked #15, #21,  and #23.

LSU is ranked #3 has only one top 25 win, against #24.

tOSU is rank #2, but has only one top 10 win, against #5 TN before they were exposed.  TN is not in the top 25 today.  tOSU also has wins against teams ranked #14, #15, and #16.

I like our chances against LSU and tOSU.

Apparently they have an early entry/commit from 6-4 Egyptian F Jana El Alvy and she will join the team very shortly.

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - DaBears17 - 01-22-2023

There have been rumors she would early enroll since she committed. Would they burn a year of her eligibility just to get another body?  She was homeschooled, so maybe this is just to get acclimated to college in the US and start learning the UConn system?

We’ll have to see.  Maybe have her practice and if they only have 7 or 8 healthy bodies in mid Feb have her play?

You're thinking as if the eligibility being burned is important to the school/coach.  What makes one think she's good enough that next year's top recruit isn't going to bump her from her spot.

When looked at from the school's (coach's) perspective, when up against it, why not bring someone in early that might help you this year.  It isn't as if the school has to give her a scholarship for 4 years.   Probably one could also point out to her, "Hey kid, you're going to warm the bench next year.  Maybe you should transfer?" and avoid the unpleasantness of dropping her scholarship even if she is still a student and wants to play.

Isn't that what the pro football teams do, hire someone for a few games while.someone else is injured?

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - 81alum - 01-22-2023

Well, MT, I sense your tongue is popping out your cheek there.  And of course, as college sports become more like pro sports, they lose any particular advantage they once enjoyed over pro sports.  The golden goose is cooking in a hot oven.

From UConn's web site:

Quote:El Alfy is not expected to participate during the 2022-23 season but can practice and travel with the team.

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - OCcardinal - 01-23-2023

Stanford is back up to #3 in the latest AP poll. We are the only team with as many as 5 AP top-25 wins.

LSU's undefeated season so far has earned them 4th in the current poll, but they haven't played any current-top 25 teams.  Plus, South Carolina is the only top-25 team on their remaining  schedule (though if Tennessee can beat UConn and/or LSU this week they should end up back in the top 25 again).

UConn's streak of (home) wins vs Texas, NC State, Duke and Iowa looked a lot more impressive earlier in the season. But they could end up with zero top 15 wins if Iowa doesn't fare well against Ohio State, Indiana and Maryland in their upcoming games. There's even an outside chance UConn could end up with no wins over any top 25 teams in the final AP regular season poll, but we'll see.

AP Rank Team (Top 25 teams defeated)
1 South Carolina (3,8,10)
2 Ohio State (13, 22)
3 Stanford (8,9,17,19,25)
4 LSU (none)
5 UConn (10,16,20,24)
6 Indiana (10,15,22 twice)
7 Notre Dame (5,12)
8 UCLA (none)
9 Utah (14,25)
T-10 Iowa (13,18)
T-10 Maryland (5,7)

Both UCLA and Utah have a shot at ranked wins this weekend. The LA schools play at the mountain schools on Friday and Sunday.

At the half, Iowa leading Ohio State 43-34 after a crazy high-scoring Q1.

Given that they are playing one another, one will definitely have a ranked win, and two possible for UCLA since they are also playing Colorado.
