Elite QB status is reserved for Super Bowl winners.  It is all about winning.

Otherwise, you find yourself in the “great numbers but show me the Lombardi your team won” category (Hi, Dan Marino).

IMO, there are only three elite QB’s currently in the league - Rodgers, Stafford and Mahomes.  There a number of guys who could bump up but still have something to prove - that they can lead their team to a championship.

I've always considered this argument specious. Relying on 21 other guys to vault you into elite territory doesn't seem to have a lot of validity.

Agreed. Performance in big games matters, but football is a team sport. Dan Marino is better then Joe Flacco and Trent Dilfer.

Likewise I would take Purdy over Rodgers and Stafford to win games this year.

If I were to rank QBs to win me a game right now it would go:
Mahomes
Herbert
Allen
Purdy
Tua
Jackson
Hurts

I never suggested winning a Super Bowl propels a QB to elite status.  I did suggest that to be considered for elite status, a Super Bowl ring must be in your possession (among other requirements).

Also, I would take any QB in the game over Rodgers this year given the fact that Rodgers will be in the cast for the rest of the season.

Stafford over Purdy this year?  Hmmm….

As for your list, flip Allen and Herbert and we agree (excluding Mahomes, I think Allen is the best QB in the NFL)….

Obviously meant rogers pre-injury, based on recent performance.

As for Stafford vs. Purdy: It is as simple as 5 INTs vs. 0 INTs (so far this year). Turnovers lose games. Niners are going to be better then most of the teams they play, and the easiest way to lose games to inferior competition is to beat yourself.

re: Rodgers - yeah, I figured that, I probably should have added a ;) to the end of the comment.  My apologies.   Would I have taken a healthy Rodgers over Purdy this year?  Yes.  I wouldn’t take anyone, other than Mahomes, over a healthy Rodgers.  He has been an elite, clutch NFL for well over a decade.  It will be interesting to see if can make a comeback.  I certainly would not bet against it.

RE: 2023 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 10-03-2023

Niners 30 Steelers 7
Niners 30 Rams 23
Giants 12 Niners 30
Cardinals 16 Niners 35

Cowboys 40 Giants 0
Jets 10 Cowboys 30
Cowboys 16 Cardinals 28
Patriots 3 Cowboys 38

Common opponents for Niners and Cowboys:
Niners 2-0 and outscored 65-28
Cowboys 1-1 and outscored 68-16

Combined record of Niners and Cowboys opponents:
Niners: 6-6
Cowboys: 3-9

The Niners have also beaten the Rams and Cardinals, who are both better than any team the Cowboys have beaten, and the Niners beat the Cardinals handily.

Cowboys have feasted on turnovers by bad offenses. The Niners have 1 giveaway, have gone 3 games without any, and are the #2 offense in the NFL, #3 in scoring, with the #1 rated passer in the NFL.

The best offense the Cowboys have played is the #12 Cardinals to whom they lost by 12. The Niners have beaten the #4 offense in the Rams. and the Cowboys 3 wins have come against 3/5 of the lowest scoring offenses in the NFL.

The Niners are -3.5 over Cowboys. If the Niners are a Super Bowl contender they will win by 10+ points.

The Eagles are the real competition.

Concerned about this one.  Dallas has an excellent defense. They will exploit the Niners weakness - which is the right side O-line.  Parsons and Lawrence are as  good a combo as you will see.

Offensively they can run the ball.  You always hope for Prescott to make the big mistake.  And he often complies.  But he also can be very good.

Niners have been terrific.  But the competition to date has been fairly weak.  And all the McC talk makes me nervous.

Spread is 3.5. Which is essentially a pick-em game on a neutral field. Cowboys may get an extra point or two cause of their following. But not sure in that.

I see a close, low scoring game.

Cowboys lost to an Arizona team the Niners beat by 19.

Cowboys have otherwise beat the Giants, Jets, and Patriots, who aren't good.

The Niners have also beat the Rams who are good.

I will go out on a limb and say the Niners will score 27+ points. Why?

- Brock Purdy is better now than he was last year; he said what he needs to improve from his playoff game against Cowboys this week, and it tracks to what he has clearly improved on this year.

- Christian McCaffrey is fully integrated into the Niners offense and he is incredible.

- The Niners are a much better Red Zone team in 2023 than 2022 as a result. They were 52% TD rate last year. They are at 67% TD rate this year.

RE: 2023 Niners thread - Mick - 10-06-2023

Both Niners and Dallas are 3-1 against the spread this year. The Niners are 2-0 against the spread at home. Dallas is 1-1 against the spread on the road when they are favorites. They haven't been road underdogs yet.

Cowboys lost to the 49ers last year 19-12. They dared Purdy to beat them through the air. Neither Mitchell (starter) nor McCaffrey nor Samuel did well. Juczscyk rushed once for eight yards. Before that, the 49ers beat the Cowboys 23-17 in the NFC wild card game. They were ahead 23-7 going into the 4th quarter and let up on the gas.

All four teams that the Cowboys have faced are 1-3, including the Cardinals who lost every game but beat Dallas by 12 at home.

Niner opponents are 2-2 (Steelers, Rams) and 1-3, (Cardinals, Giants). I don't think the 49ers have had a particularly difficult time against any of those teams. On the down side, they have let up on the gas a bit on defense a few times.

Purdy is a year better. McCaffrey is more integrated into the offense. Niners are 4-0.

The 49ers want a first round bye. They're motivated and relatively healthy.

I think the Niners win by 10+. This will be a statement win. Purdy will have a big day. Hope the defense steps up. My prediction is 30-17.

As noted, the key matchup is Dallas DL v. 49ers OL. This is the test we have been waiting for.  Can McKivitz and Burford play at a level (v. a superior opponent) necessary to give Purdy time to make plays?

Also, can SF stop the Dallas run game?

And, of course, Dallas has the intangibles on their side.  They have been knocked out of the playoffs by the 49ers that last two years.  They desperately want to turn the table this season.

Dallas 20 SF 17.

Just starting the fourth and the Niners score again. 35-10. Should be more, as they left points on the field with some mistakes in the first half. They look really good, or the Cowboys overrated. Thinking a little of both. . ..

Good game. The Cowboys play a lot of Cover 1 (63% of their defense, safety plays close to the line), basically to key on McCaffrey. That leaves routes open over the middle for Aiyuk, Kittle, Samuel.

Purdy was 17/24 for 252 yards, 4 TDs, a new career high. QBR, 83.6, passer rating, 144.4. BTW, going into this weekend, Purdy led the NFL in both QBR and passer rating (115.1).

Niners are at Cleveland next Sunday, game time 10 a.m. pacific. Little bit of a trap game, maybe...Browns were off this weekend, Niners are traveling three time zones, body clock issues. At least the Browns aren't very good, currently 2-2 with losses to Pittsburgh and Baltimore, wins over Cincy and Tennessee.

A superior effort by SF.  My pregame analysis was as off the mark as possible.  Another reason why I never bet on sports….

Well, I didn't think it would be that much of a margin, but I felt confident the Niners would win comfortably. Of course, I don't bet on sports either. If I made a giant bet on the Niners -3.5 I would have made a lot of money, but I'm convinced if I did, they would not have covered. I know it's crazy to think that way, but much like a coach of a team, I hate losing more than I like winning, so I don't want to even entertain it happening.

Anyway, being in CT, I get to see the Giants, Jets, and Patriots every week. The Giants and Patriots are arguably the two worst teams in the NFL. The Jets are better than those two, but they are not a great team by any means. And Dallas lost to a 1-4 Cardinals team the Niners beat by 19. I knew the Dallas D was fraudulent because I've seen these Northeast teams play a lot. That includes the Saints - who aren't great themselves - blasting the Patriots 34-0. I mean even yesterday, yes the Jets won, but the Broncos D, and offense, are both awful. Hell, so too is there special teams. So the truth is, the Cowboys played one good team, and as a someone on a YouTube comments section said, "baby seal hunted" them.

I knew going into this season the Niners had the most talent they've ever had, but having talent isn't as important as putting it together and realizing its potential. As someone who has seen all 5 Niners Super Bowl winners I was not overly impressed with the team through the first 4 games. I thought they were the top team in the NFL after Week 4, but not a dominant team.

The 42-10 woodshed beating of "America's Team" (don't hear that too much any more do you), demonstrated what all that talent absolutely can do. FHOF Brock Purdy's tiny cap hit has broken the NFL and positioned the Niners to be the greatest team in if not NFL history, certainly their own. My season prediction was 13-4, but this team has the ability to go 17-0. Obviously, it won't likely happen, but that's how good this Niners team is and can be.

But it gets better. They get pass rusher Randy Gregory next week, and the teams with the two best available pass rushers on expiring contracts are 1-4 (Vikings' Danielle Hunter) and 0-5 (Panthers' Brian Burns), teams that are going to trade them.

No team in the NFL is better positioned and more willing to trade more to get one of them, and OMG do I want Danielle Hunter who is tied for #2 in NFL in sacks with 6. I'd trade a first and 2nd rd pick to get him, and would not be outbid.

49ers talent is terrific.  But this is not the most talent they have ever had. Look at the ‘84 roster….. Not to mention ‘88-89. But this may be their most talented post-cap roster.

Game reminded me of the ‘81 shellacking of Dallas. The one in which “the real Cowboys” weren’t there. Leading to Bill Walsh’s great line “ I guess they have two teams…..”. That and the Pittsburgh game put that team on the radar.

Great start. They look fantastic.  But you don’t win a Championship in Oct.  Stay healthy.

Brock was fantastic last night.  Only one pass I wish he didn’t throw and that’s the pass short middle that almost got McCaffrey killed.  CMac took a beating.  Cowboys obviously keyed on stopping him. (BTW- last two weeks he’s been the recipient of a vicious face mask. The hold and pull type. ) But…. Pick your poison.  Good to see Kittle show his stuff.  Chiefs can have Kelce.  I’ll take Kittle.

Hats off to McKivitz. Didn’t notice him…..

In the summer, Pro Football Focus named McKivitz to their 2023 All-Breakout team, noting that he didn't allow a single sack or clean hit or have a penalty in 2022. Last night, McKivitz and the rest of the line had a very good day against Parsons, to the point that it caused Parsons to question himself.

Good idea. And I'd like to see them get a backup tackle for Trent Williams who can one day start. TW is 35...

The Cowboys said publicly before the game that they would key on McCaffrey, and their Cover 1 defense is suited to that, though it left the middle open repeatedly. And Kittle did have a great game, three TDs. That was a particularly nasty face mask on CMC...the Cowboy player should sit for a game because of that.

Kinda forgot how sweet it is to follow an awesomely entertaining football team.

RE: 2023 Niners thread - Mick - 10-09-2023

Niners now have +99 points, best in the NFL by a wide margin, the Bills are next at +79. Eagles are at +37, and have had some very close wins. The Niners play the Eagles in their 12th game on the road.

Purdy's season passer rating is now 123.1, best in the NFL. He also has the best QBR at 83.7. Purdy and CJ Stroud are the last two starting NFL QBs who haven't thrown an INT. McCaffrey still leads the league in rushing with 510 yards. And Kittle is T5 in the NFL in TDs...all from the three he caught last night.

Bring on the Browns!

I've indicated 11 lPro Bowl projections, and even made HOF projections that don't include Purdy
I'd argue Ward deserves Pro Bowl consideration, plus Gipson Jr. and Armstead are really good, and maybe one more OL might sneak in there. If the Niners get 11, it will be the most they've ever had, and I could go up to 14 super talented guys.
If Purdy doesn't make HOF, there are 5 HOF players on the 2023 team. If he does, there are 6.

This is why I make the case the 2023 is the most talented team the Niners have ever had. Even without a HOF QB, he's playing at a HOF level, and the Niners have 5 HOF players not including the QB.

As David Lombardi said, this Niners teams has better stats than the '94 team, and to me, it's because it is more talented. It's not just the number of talented players, it's how good the good ones are.

It is kind of remarkable as a fan to have had four amazing teams since 1980 and they don't include the 1981, 1988, 2013 or 2019 Super Bowl teams.

But I think what this exercise shows is how much talent is needed to just be in a Super Bowl.

1981 - 2 HOF players (Montana and Lott)
1988 - 4 HOF players (Montana, Rice, Lott, Haley)
2013 - 1 HOF player (Gore), Willis should be, maybe Joe Staley
2019 - 0 so far, but maybe Staley, Kittle, Bosa, Warner (should have won this one for sure!)

The 2023 Niners are absolutely loaded and based on past history, should be in and win the Super Bowl this season.
