Sampedro and Swedick both make par on 18 and Sampedro wins her match 1 up!
And Ortengren wins 17 to take her match 2&1! That's two in the books for the good side.

2-1 Stanford as Xu loses 3&2.
Ganne is tied through 15, but Revuelta just needs to halve one of the last four holes to clinch the win.

A huuuuge win for Martin Sampedro. Her first ever NCAA match play win. She was officially 0-1 last year but was down in one match and all square in the other when Stanford clinched.
As she explained in her post-match interview, it's hard to get the ball close to the hole on approach shots. The course is pretty forgiving off the tee, but requires very precise shots around the green. The pins are tucked, the greens are firm, the wind is up. The players are used to taking dead aim at the hole, getting it close, having good birdie putts. Martin Sampedro played very steady with 16 pars and one very important birdie on 15.
Stanford's frosh have been terrific today!! Ortengren and Revuelta were rocks all morning. The veterans on the other hand played tighter.
I am a little concerned about Xu. She had a 2 up lead on the front 9, then bogeyed 4 of the next 6 holes and she never could catch up. Yesterday as she had a chance to contend for the individual championship, she dunked her tee shot on the par 3 16th in the water. It barely got half way to the hole. I think Coach Walker placed her 3rd in the lineup to protect her a bit.
But Stanford's experience and depth eventually won the day this morning. Looks like an ACC match up vs. FSU this afternoon.

What terrific finishing from Stanford today:
* Sampedro won 4 of her 5 final holes and halved the other;
* Ortengren won 2 of her 5 final holes and halved the other three;
* (whistles past talking about Xu)
* Ganne won 3 of her final 6 holes, lost 2, and halved the other;
* And Revuelta won 4 of her final 5 holes and halved the other.
So, in the three matches we won, we won 10 of our final 15 holes and halved the rest. That's insane.
So, in the quarters:
#1 Stanford def. #10 UVA 3.5-1.5
#4 Florida State def. #9 USC 3.5-1.5
#5 Oregon leads #6 Texas 4-1, with decent leads (3 up through 14; 2 up through 13; 2 up through 12; and 3 up through 12; the match they trail has Texas 4 up through 13)
#2 Arkansas is in a tight one with #11 Northwestern, as Arkansas has a couple of big leads (3 up with 3 to go and 4 up with 5 to go), Northwestern has a couple of narrower leads (2 up with 4 to go; 1 up with 6 to go), and one match is tied with 4 holes to go. Interestingly, the individual champion from Arkansas, Marin, is 1 down with 6 to go.

I would consider Xu to be our 5th golfer, despite her performance in stroke play. She came out of nowhere to finish 3rd in stroke play, but she's consistently been our 5th golfer all year and lost 8&6 in her ACC semis match (the worst possible loss is 10&8).

When I cut the cord I picked up YouTubeTV, which has Golf Channel. I was lucky enough to see the last few holes sealing the win. A couple of those UVA putts were so-o-o close, one in particular lipped out.

Stanford plays FSU this afternoon in the semis. Yes, Mirabel Ting (the top collegiate golfer this year) and Lottie Woad (the #1 amateur in the world). Getting a point from either of those matches would be very big for Stanford.
It is incredible to recognize that Stanford has now made the match play portion of the NCAA competition each of the last 10 years and has made the semifinals in 8 of those 10 years. An unparalleled run of success that is still going.

If I read this right then going in Florida St has an edge in two matches (Revuelta/#7 v Ting/#1, Ganne/#16 v Woad/#3) but Stanford has an edge in the other three (Sampedro/#9 v Williams/#114, Ortengren/#5 v Gazzoli/Unranked, and Xu/#29 v Fullbrook/#105)

FSU has the 2 top dogs, but we are just so much better top to bottom. Of course in match play, anything can happen. Really looking forward to Revuelta/Ting and Ganne/Woad! Go Card!
