RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - MSG1716 - 09-03-2024

Yesterday was fun.  Not only watching us win and play significantly better than against Minn, but also watching Texas lose badly in the fifth set.

I have been writing since the end of last season that this team would be good and could be better than last year.  My primary reason was because I felt the last few years, Stanford has not been mentally tough.  Their stars didn't come through in the 5th set against USD and they gave up against Texas last year in the last set (like Wisconsin did against Texas on Sunday).  The one pin that played mentally tough and gritty (great word as I once had a dog named Grit) was Rubin, and she's got two years left.  I was hoping that Kurt, Jordan and Blyashov would be gritty as well.  The first two seemed calm under pressure all weekend.  I loved that we played tough when the teams hit 20 in most sets, and came back in a few of them.  That's what a winning team does.

Offense v Defense and 6-rotation players. Hambly ideally would like 3 6-rotation players as he did last year.  He likes have the extra offensive options out of the back court, rather than just 2 or 3 offensive options.  Keeps the defense guessing more.  BUT that requires decent back court skills from those 6-rotation players.  Rubin is solid.  She did have 4 or 5 service return errors and was keyed on my Wisconsin, but does as well in the back court as our DS do.  Kurt and Harvey have started the season weaker in the backcourt, so Hambly first went pretty quickly replacing Kurt w/ Beaven in the back row, and later Cawa (our likely libero next year) for Harvey.  It worked well against Wisconsin.  I'm sure we all noticed longer rallies when we have a better back row and fewer offensive options.  Blyashov is supposed to be a solid 6-position player.  See when she gets healthy and see if she gets put into the starting line-up.

I liked that a lot of freshman got action, Cawa as a DS, Yu as a serving specialist, and obviously Andrew as the starting MB.  I love the verbal leadership from Rubin (at nearly every timeout) and also Francis, as well as the core stability of Miner and Oglivie.  This WILL BE an exciting and fun year to watch Stanford VB whether we make it to the Final Four or not.  I'd say it's a coin flip between Pitt, Louisville and us on who will win the ACC with most people predicting Pitt or Louisville.  Can't wait to see every match I can, and looking forward to our home opener against Texas on the 15th.  Hope we are undefeated heading into those final 3 tough OOC matches of UT, Nebraska and Kentucky.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - paloalto - 09-03-2024

Nice summary MSG.   I think using more DS this year is perhaps the best decision by Hambly.   Apparently Cawa and Beaven are above Pringle in the DS pecking order.

Stanford is #1 in the Massey Rating (although it gets more accurate as the season goes on).

#4 Louisville vs #7 Penn State today at 4:30pm PT on Big Ten Network.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Hieronymus - 09-03-2024

This match seemed like a good model for how the team can win this year. Serve tough, play great defense and pass better than the opponent. Then hit well just enough and get just enough blocking to pull it out. It isn’t going to be easy to do that every night though - not a lot of margin for error.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - cardfan77 - 09-03-2024

I’d like to see Pringle over Beaven.

I quoted you because you made the statement about Oglivie not being on the court at the end of the match, which was not true.

I don't want to speak for Paloalto, but his question may have been a reaction to my comment, which was that Oglivie was not on the court when we made our run at the end of the first set from 21-24 to 26-24, which I believe was true.  Yu was serving because it was the portion of the rotation where the Libero has to sit out in order to only serve from one position.  She would have come back in had Wisconsin side-outed (or sided out?)

Anyway, I didn't mean to imply there was anything wrong with Oglivie or that she was injured or held out.  I just had noted we had several defensive gems in that run, which was all the more remarkable for the fact that it happened when Oglivie had to rotate out.

Penn State destroyed #4 Louisville.  Louisville was embarrassed.

I'm watching SMU vs #2 Nebraska on ACC Network.  SMU is currently up 2-0.

SMU wins 3-0.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - cardfan77 - 09-03-2024

Nebraska and Louisville both were swept 3-0.

I expected Penn St. vs Louisville to a tight match and could go either way. I expected a 3-0 win maybe 3-1 win for Nebraska. Nebraska had no business losing to SMU. Nebraska is so loaded with talents. They should have won the NC last year and they should have won this game. It’s like Cook does not know what to do with all the talent he has. He only brought in Landfair when it was 23-17 in the 3rd set.

I never understood Landfair’s decision to transfer to Nebraska. Probably $$$$

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BostonCard - 09-03-2024

The number 1, 2, 4, and 6 teams from the poll were all beaten.  No idea where we will be on the next poll, but probably 2 or 3.

EDIT: We do have a match tomorrow against Marquette, so the above may have been a bit presumptuous, for which I will take 50 lashes with a wet noodle.

SMU looked really good, kind of like us.   Serve, pass, good setter and scrappiness.  It’ll be a very tough match for us at SMU.

Exactly what I was thinking BosCard.  If SMU comes up with some big NIL in the future for WVB, they are going to be a problem.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - cardfan77 - 09-03-2024

SMU has 8 transfers. 7 out of 8 are graduate students. It’s just a matter of time until the coach gets poached by a bigger program.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - fullmetal - 09-03-2024

I think this is the final year for the super-covid-seniors, so there could be less roster experience inflation going forward next season.

Considering sports where NIL dollars may exceed post-college pro dollars, might we see talented players redshirt early to have that 4th year ("grad school") after they get bigger, stronger, and more experienced and go play for some school that collects a bunch of them and pays them a lot?

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 09-04-2024

This is the last season for Fall and Winter sports for the Covid year. It’s done for Spring Sports now

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - MSG1716 - 09-04-2024

I wouldn't worry about polls pre-season particularly with a developing younger team (half our team).  What matters is improvement and development.  We were better against Wisconsin than Minnesota.  What will matter for end of year seeding is RPI (which will be great) and beating Pitt & Louisville to win the conference.  The winner of the ACC should be a #1 seed.

DS.  I was a little surprised too to see Cawa over Pringle as the second DS after Beaven.  Guess Pringle is being recruited over.  I trust Hambly to pick his best players.  I wouldn't be shocked it Yu ends up the serving specialist over Pringle as the year goes on.  She has done well in her limited action.  I know Hambly follows closely the percentage of service points won by each player.  It's not aces.  For instance, Kipp led the team in aces but wasn't top 5 as "best server".  It's all about points won.  Great serving is getting the opponent out of system making it a 50-50 or better that we win the point.  Stanford was great at that as a team last weekend.  Hambly, as we all know, does not care about service errors.  To him, it's a little like strike outs in baseball today.  An out is an out and what matters is your on base percentage.

What I've noticed most about the first few weeks of the season is that teams with hard to return serves are the teams winning.  That and blocks.  SMU won at the service line.  We won at the service line.  I will keep quoting WI Coach Kelly Sheffield that Stanford serving is "narly".  Hope it stays that way.  We need to improve our blocking which I'm confident will happen with more playing time together.  I think Andrew will be a top defensive player and our new OHs will get better and better with more action.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 09-04-2024

Kirsch when she is healthy could be our best DS

That's interesting, I didn't know it was season-specific.  I do think for full-year sports, it's still in effect.

If you mean Koko Kirsch, how would you know that?  She played minimally in four sets last year with no digs and then got a medical redshirt after the season.   To my knowledge she was not nationally ranked coming out of high school.   She is an unknown to me.

I would be interested to know how a player with a small amount of garbage time thus far might be Stanford's best DS.

Stanford at Marquette today at 5:00pm PT live-streamed on Flosports ($30.00/month).  If anyone watches this match, a report would be appreciated.

Last season Marquette was 21-11 with no wins against ranked teams.

Good point on Koko.  You're right!
