That's great to hear.  There's so much Somfai can do for the team this year.  She could be a real mismatch for our opponents at the 3.

Can't wait for the exhibition tomorrow night (though it looks like it will only be radio sadly).

Excited to see Somfai and Agara playing together at the 3/4.   The can both shoot the 3, drive or post up so there is a lot of flexibility to take advantage of defensive matchups.  Could be Eschmeyer at the 5 or Umeh posting up, setting screens and positioning for rebounds.

I expect Kate to start Mary Ashley Stevenson, Lepolo, Clardy and Somfai, but I'm hopeful we'll see significant minutes from Swain and Eschmeyer.  Will Kate choose to follow her mentor and pull the freshmen as soon as they make a mistake, OR, will she let them play and learn on the court?
Stevenson is close to, or she's reached her ceiling; same with Lepolo and if Kate (choosing experience over potential), continues to start those two, I don't see us doing much better in the ACC than last season.  Swain can be a brobdingnagian difference maker and challenge the opponent's defense.  Once Eschmeyer gets minutes and touches, we'll have a better presence in the post.  Along with Nunu (an all-ACC performer) and a much improved Clardy, our future rests with the freshmen.  We cannot afford to lose Somfai, Swain and/or Eschmeyer in the portal, so they need to be heavily in the mix in every game.

RE: WBB 2025-2026 season - 81alum - 10-29-2025

Looking forward to seeing some Cardboarders at the game tonight!  While I haven't yet been able to summon enough enthusiasm to repeat my hours-long research and write-ups, I will be at the games hoping to shake myself out of the college sports doldrums I have been in.  Whether or not that happens, I always enjoy seeing friends during halftime!

Expecting Kate to start the veterans -- Lepolo, Clardy, Agara, Stevenson, Ogden and hopefully substitute liberally. Excited to see how the freshmen look.

I was not that impressed with the offensive ball movement at the scrimmage -- too much pass, then hold, looking for an open player. Exception was Somfai who looked to shoot/drive first before passing.

I DO believe that this young team will improve each game over the season, and that the coaching staff will figure out the best way to make the pieces work together.

Can this possibly be right? My scan of the schedule shows one game with Cal. Please tell me my ancient eyes have failed me again.

Swain looking good! Our leading scorer so far.

Just checked the score..we are not exactly dominating at least thus far. Anyone watching that can provide some updates? Glad to hear Swain and Somfai got the start.

Almost halfway through the 3rd and we've forced 7 turnovers. It feels like with Swain, Clardy, Lepolo, and Iijwoye we should be disrupting teams on the perimeter much more than that.

What happened to our 3 point shooting?  We are 2-13 near the end of the 3rd Q.

Agara and Somfai are both on track for double doubles.  FT shooting has been excellent in this game so far (18-19).

The radio announcer seems to be mis-pronouncing Somfai's name.  He is saying Shum-fay-ee.  Who knows the proper pronunciation?

This is from AI, can't vouch for the accuracy. The stadium announcer seems to pronounce it slightly differently each time...

The correct pronunciation of "Somfai," as in Stanford women's basketball player Lara Somfai, follows Hungarian conventions. It is pronounced as "SHOM-fy," where the first syllable rhymes with "home" and the second syllable is pronounced like "fee" but with a short "i" sound, resulting in "fy" ([shom-fy]). This is consistent with Hungarian phonetics, where "S" is pronounced "sh" and "ai" yields an "eye" sound, commonly anglicized to "fy" for easy reference.Additional NotesPronunciation breakdown: SHOM-fy ."Somfai" is a Hungarian surname, and such surnames are typically stressed on the first syllable.Stanford communications and basketball coverage may sometimes anglicize the pronunciation slightly for ease, but "SHOM-fy" is closest to the authentic pronunciation.

RE: WBB 2025-2026 season - martyup - 10-29-2025

Thanks Amy.  I think announcers are going to butcher her name all season.

Final score 85 to 50.  We out rebounded them 60 to 30.  Our 3 point shooting percentage was a dismal 16.7%.

Go to Somfai and click on the little ear symbol as Lara pronounces it for us

Maybe we can blame the baskets. For some unknown reason the freestanding baskets were in use instead of the ones that swing down from the ceiling.  :-/

The AI butchered that, contradicting itself repeatedly about how the vowels in the second syllable.are pronounced.
