There's a few ex-Giants on that Braves team, six of them by my count.  The Panda had a rough year, at .178/.302/.342/.644. in 73 ABs with 25 strikeouts.  Adam Duvall hit 16 HRs in 199 ABs for Atlanta, 38 overall and led the league in RBIs with 113.  Ehire Adrianza went .247/.327/.401/.728. in 109 games.  Steven Vogt got into 26 games (.167 avg).  Drew Smyly went a career (and Atlanta staff) best .733 winning percentage with an 11-4 record.  Will Smith had 37 saves in 71 games.

Interesting that the 107 win (Giants) and 106 win (Dodgers) didn't get into the World Series, but the 88-win Braves did. In the regular season, Braves went 3-3 against the Giants and 2-4 against the Dodgers...of course, they went 4-2 against the Dodgers in the NLCS.

Actually the margin at the Commonwealth Games was 0.8 seconds, still a great race where Bannister came back from a fifteen yard deficit.

There is a great book called "The Perfect Mile" which recounts the race between Bannister, Landy and Wes Santee to be the first man to run under four minutes, and their various battles. Highly recommended whether you are a track fan or not.

Wasn’t Cal in the final top-25 that year under Tedford when they went to the Holiday bowl?  They finished second in the PAC-10 to USC, who went on to play in the national title, and the Bears were pissy that they didn’t fall into the Rose Bowl (Texas was picked), and then they proved the Rose Bowl right by laying an egg in the Holiday Bowl.  They were in the top-5 heading into the bowl game; hard to believe they wouldn’t have finished in the top-25.

Yep.  The last time Cal was ranked in the final AP poll was 2006.  They finished #14.

I think it tells us there is a lot more going than bad football.  It speaks to how dysfunctional the program is from top to bottom.  

By the way, here are the next five on the drought list:

Kansas, Illinois, Boston College - last ranked in the final poll in 2007
Pitt and Texas Tech - last ranked in the final poll in 2009

Gil McDougald and Mickey Mantle both broke in with the Yankees in 1951; McDougald won rookie of the year.

McDougald hit 306/396/488, Mantle hit 267/349/443 in fewer games. Of course Mantle was only 19 years old.

I thought it was Swen Nater, who never started but played behind Bill Walton at UCLA.  Supposedly Nater was terrible at first, but playing against Walton every day he really improved.  Never started at UCLA, was the 16th overall selection after having played against Walton in practice for four years.  Walton, to his credit, said Nater was the toughest guy he played against in college.

Looked up the answer.  Not Nater.

I like this answer more than the actual answer. There have been plenty of high schoolers who went directly to the NBA but Swen Nater's career was remarkable:

1. Raised in an orphanage in the Netherlands, reunited with his mother as part of a television show at age nine.
2. Didn't play high school basketball; not being able to afford shoes may have been a factor in being cut during tryouts.
3. Averaged 3 points and 3 rebounds as a senior at UCLA.
4. Drafted by both the ABA and NBA, became ABA rookie of the year.
5. Played four years in the ABA and eight years in the NBA. Finished with cumulative averages of 12 ppg and 12 rpg, leading the ABA and NBA in rebounding one season each.

Unlikely to see another career like this one.

P.S. He only played two seasons at UCLA and he'd been a Community College All America before that so he probably wasn't terrible, but practicing against Walton every day surely served him very well even though his court time in games was limited.
