My favorite virus story so far on March 6...
An Ontario man tested positive for Covid-19 after returning to Canada from Las Vegas. The presumption is he got it in Las Vegas, where there have been zero reported cases.
The odds of a guy traveling back to Canada, and getting it from the one person in Las Vegas who had it are quite minuscule, suggesting some serious community spread going on in Vegas with nobody knowing about it. I know they changed their slogan, but it looks like in fact what happens in Vegas absolutely does not stay in Vegas!

Indeed, last week I went on a medical mission to Honduras (no known covid cases), and the first patient on my second day complained of cough, fever, and weight loss. A chest X-ray showed what I expected, a right upper lobe pneumonia, and a few hours later his sputum came back AFB positive (that means he had tuberculosis for every non-physician here). TB kills 1.5 million people a year worldwide, which is 5,000 times as many people as have been killed by Covid-19, and 10 million people became ill with TB (100 times as many as have become infected with Covid-19). This doesn't even include the 100's of million of people who have a latent TB infection (TB that the body has managed to fight off but which can reactivate in the future). The good news is that TB is treatable, and just yesterday a paper in the New England Journal of Medicine was published that showed a three drug combination can treat highly drug resistant TB with about a 90% success rate.

Yup, the good news and bad news with kids is that the disease doesn't hit them very hard at all. The bad news is that they become carriers that are symptom-less or almost symptom-less. That means they can easily spread it to their homes and more vulnerable people.

UW just called off all in-person classes through rest of semester. Just online now.
I don't think the NCAA Tournament is gonna happen. The cases will be soaring next week as testing comes on line and local health leaders are not going to want large gatherings happening.

One more reason to be proud of our alma mater - Stanford has developed its own in-house COVID-19 test. Turnaround time is 3 times the speed of the CDC's test. Strange setting to say this about, but GO CARDINAL.

On my PC, it has been very prominent all day. The fact that there are attendance limits is in big letters at the top of the page. The only problem is the next page with the text of the announcements has the details below the first announcement on 3/3.

Apparently they are still planning to have the staff, which includes akiddoc junior, come to work. Stupidity. Campus should be shut down.
