Third time around is the big thing now.  Smoltz put it quite well - when he was a starter he didn’t come out of the shoot throwing everything he had. Today pitchers do.  So hitters have seen everything once through the order. At most twice.  Smoltz is too kind to say what he really meant - in his era, they pitched.  Today most just throw. 

Again, math.  And baseball becoming nothing but a power game.

Evolution of pitching has been interesting.  They're called "pitchers" and it's "pitching" because in the early days of baseball, it was like pitching horseshoes.  You couldn't throw it overhand to the batter, and you weren't allowed to snap your wrist.  Balls weren't called for the first 19 years or so...anyway, the story of the evolution of pitching:

I don't know Smyly's history - was he with the Braves before the Giants?

1 year at $11M seems very reasonable for a pretty good (to good) starting pitcher, which I think Smyly is.  Did the Giants offer him anything along those lines?

Phillies.  If he stays healthy and pitches like he did in ‘20, the Braves got a bargain.  Heath big issue.  Don’t know if Giants made similar offer.  I think they should have.

Not an Alex Wood fan, btw.

I can do almost nothing with my left hand Bobbbb plus rotator cuff impingement June of ‘19. Still blaze from the right side but would need six weeks of buildup. Have there been any 74 year old pitchers?

I played for Con Dempsey at Giannini JHS in 1959 before I entered SI the next year. Signed by the Pirates, hurt, signed with the Phillies and never regained form. Taught for many years. Pitcher of the Year in the PCL after starring at USF. Laid back coach later worked for the SF team in the Examiner All Star game. Nice man.

Von was an interesting case.  He didn't have arm problems, he altered his delivery and got Steve Blass disease.  Couldn't hit the plate.  Turned into a third baseman, hit 14 home runs in the minors, but couldn't make the parent club.  Tough.

Trevor Bauer.  Only wants a one year deal.  NL-best 1.73 ERA.

Taijuan Walker.  4-3, 28 yrs old, 1.16 WHIP in 11 starts.

Charlie Morton.  2019 Cy Young finalist, all-star in 2018 and 2019, mediocre 2020 season, was 3-1 with very strong postseason in 2020.

Mike Minor, all star and #8 in 2019 Cy Young voting, not good in 2020, but had good WHIP of 1.248.

He is definitely a “Farhan kinda guy” - coming off injuries, big-time upside, reasonable cost, and, of course, left-handed.  He is a Gausman/Smyly type of pitcher.  Pay him a few million, watch him flourish and flip him in July for high value prospects.

Note: Zaidi traded for him when he was working for the Dodgers.
