The Baylor coach is the type of coach where every foul against her team is a bad call. Although amazingly as soon as the game was over she accepted the outcome graciously which was surprising to me.

However, I generally agree. Refs are reluctant to call fouls on the last shot of a game. We have been victimized by that before too.

I understand why teams run down the clock at the end of a quarter/game. I think often they let the clock go too far down and then panic when an easy shot doesn't materialize. They run out of options, fling up a shot, and put their chances on a ref bailing them out with a foul call.

Carrington made a bad decision. She dribbled into a crowd with no real chance of getting off a good shot. Forcing up a lousy shot and hoping for a foul call is not a very good plan.

Agreed. By the rules, it was a foul, but Carrington should know that's not going to be called against UConn in the waning seconds of an Elite Eight match. Hell, it might not be called against anyone; the refs were letting a lot of contact go throughout the game.

Makes you wonder if subconsciously refs know that it may be better for the NCAA, in terms of having marquis names in FF, thus garnering more fan interest, to lean on the side of them when it's a close call. Augustus was the big name then, just as Bueckers is the big name today.

plus, dijonai went up vertical (not into the defender) and was knocked to the floor with a forceful bump to the body and a whack to the face. pretty clear in the photo.

The question is whether it was a wise decision by D to take that shot when running toward a triple team. I remember thinking before the play even got started that Baylor needed a clean jump shot since there would likely be no foul called regardless--given how much contact was being allowed in the game and given the situation. If a fan can figure that out.....

I think it was a foul but I also think that it was not a great play, going into a tall double team like that, and that given how the game was called that probably was not going to be called right there. It looked much less obvious in real time. Baylor was at their best when they could out-physical teams. They are, I guess now were, not a great outside shooting team. The refs gave them the style game they wanted and they took full advantage for much of the game. Losing Richards killed them. A shame given her situation with the injury and recovery. As for Carrington, it was a great and terrible game all at once. She imposed herself to the good but she ended up 7-22 I think it was, with lots of FTs for much of her scoring. Live by the refs, die by the refs. She will make a good pro because of how physical she can play. I bet she gets drafted. I hate Baylor with a passion so I was rooting for UConn, and I hate to do that so I am kinda grumpy about that game.

Baylor seemed to not have a set play in that end of game situation; it was a mess and DiJonai was just hoping for a desperation shot/foul call at the end of the game. I think this was where not having much of an outside game hurt them in that UConn wasn't worried about them passing it out to a perimeter shooter, so they could collapse and double team on any drive.

Agree Farm07. Baylor was really unorganized and undisciplined and had no idea what to do on that last play. In general, I'm not impressed with their style of basketball (just me). They win through strength and toughness, and this type of no-call game totally benefits them. UConn is way more skilled.
DC was put in a bad spot - nowhere to go with 5 secs left. She was hammered, but fouls weren't called throughout the game. Did y'all see Williams from UConn get hacked on that breakaway? Totally should have been an and-1. Agree with others that you're not going to get that call and they should've had a play called. Maybe spread it out for Moon to attack and dish? Anything would have been better than confusion.
Assuming we get there, I'm glad it's UConn that will be waiting. I think we can take 'em.

I'm curious what folks think of Carrington's decision-making on Baylor's second-to-last possession. I need to rewatch, but my recollection is that they were down 3 with a little over 30 sec remaining in the game, and at the time that Carrington drove to shoot, another Baylor player was open at the top of the arc. Announcers in the game said that Carrington made the right call, shooting in traffic, drawing the foul, and ultimately sinking both of her free throws to leave Baylor down by one. But I wonder if she would have been able to pass out and have her teammate hit the three for the tie. That decision, in hindsight, seems equally consequential to her actions in the game's final seconds.
