I guess Papa John doesn't really read the Stanford Magazine.  ;)

I suspect that a few other schools might also do the if we were a country thing, but I knew some entity affiliated with Stanford had made this type of claim for Stanford several times over the last few decades.

The vs. China claims from the past are rather depressing now.
I can only imagine the Stanford Magazine won't be making that particular comparison again.

Thanks for doing the legwork, DC 86. I'm disappointed that Stanford Magazine and/or Athletics would be the source of such misinformation. But yes, I agree with your sentiments.

I mean, the bottom line is that Stanford isn't actually a country, so while the whole thing is a bit silly, accusations of misinformation are a bit much.  I imagine Stanford does similar things with stuff like "Nobel Prize Winners", patents granted, etc, just as you often hear stuff like "If California were a country, it's GDP would rank 5th in the world, ahead of India but behind Germany".

There is a lot of kvetching over what is, in essence, just a silly brag.

Australia made a game of it by going on an 8-2 run, but too little, too late.  Klineman/Ross win it on a serve into the net.

Congrats to Stanford's Alix Klineman (and April Ross too, even though she went to USC)!

That's 20 medals for Stanford athletes, with more coming in water polo and maybe indoor volleyball.

Yeah, it was better when Misty May was Kerri Walsh' partner and I didn't have to wash my hands after rooting for them.  Still, I think Ross has been a great influence for Klineman, and her experience (she was Walsh' partner in 2016) really helped.  The two (Ross and Klineman) are really a good fit for each other, and I hope that have a multi-Olympic run like Walsh/May did.

It’s a great feat for April Ross to get another gold, but you almost have to think that this was her last rodeo at 39 to snag another gold. On some level, there is only three years till Paris, but definitely.....hard to see Walsh Jennings or Ross going for another go round next Olympics.

I don't find the California GDP statement misleading - or certainly not as misleading as the "If Stanford were a country it would have X medals, ahead of . . ."  But then again, it's possible I'm missing something.

I don’t give a damn whether it’s misleading, silly, or an outright lie.  Every four (or five) years, the world gets to join in unabashed nationalist homerism mixed with an emotional celebration of good sportsmanship like sharing gold medals.  I wish we could hear All Right Now played to the tears of Stanford fans around the world in honor of our athletes’ accomplishments.  Go Card!

FWIW, my understanding is that Ross is pretty clearly targeting another run in 2024.

Alix is probably somewhat less likely.  Not sure she enjoys the grind that is the beach volleyball tour.....

Walsh is close to my age already; she would be 46 in 3 years.  By the time Paris rolls around we are going to be talking about her first son's recruitment.  Now, she did win a bronze five years ago at 38 so maybe you could see Ross give it a go.

Klineman is a spring chicken compared to them, and will only be 35 by the next Olympics.

in 2016 Stanford Athletes won 27 medals

to date this Olympics they have won 20

Additions coming from

- W volleyball (Foluke Akinradewo)
- WWP (Aria Fischer, Makenzie Fischer, Jamie Neushul, Melissa Seidemann, Maggie Steffens)

which brings the total to 26 medal won by Stanford Athletes

unclear if there are any more to be had, Bob any medal chances in the remaining events?

Not Bob, but Albane has a slight chance at medaling in golf (four shots out of third place after three rounds) and Jake Riley is a competing in the marathon, albeit a longshot. Earlier today Mackenzie Little finished 8th in the javelin and Grant Fisher was 9th in the 5k.
