Walk-on true frosh WR Jason Thompson(!!!!!!!!) returned punts once Filkins went out.

Thanks for the info.  Hey, the guy had 3 stars with an 86 rating.  He was MVP of his league. We did well to get him without a scholarship, and maybe he’ll earn one when all is said and done.

One good thing - Stanford punches above its weight with walk-ons.  Quite possibly, two of them are starting this Saturday at RB and PR, along with a third that was a former walk-on (Tremayne).

I’ll be rooting for that kid Thompson, if we see him again. #26 for those keeping track.

--------

UPDATE: Are you sure he's actually a walk-on?  With that rating, all the other offers, and this article written on NSD?: https://247sports.com/college/stanford/Article/Jason-Thompson-Stanford-football-recruiting-National-Signing-Day-Early-Harvard-Westlake-178515724/

I'll be pulling for him either way.

Craziest thing about Caleb Robinson, is he wasn't even recruited to play football at Stanford. Got into the school on his own, then emailed Coach Shaw once he was admitted.

RE: 2022 Stanford Football Personnel - Langdude - 10-31-2022

Friends:

My apologies for not posting the last few games, and for neglecting the chart. Work has demanded a lot of attention, and I had to triage activities! The chart is now updated with Harris's departure and Leigber's position switch. I will also update injures and starters as I proceed through the last three games.

Irish

Walk-On Union Watch. Four non-scholarship players got PT against Notre Dame. No statistics were recorded in the game unless noted. In addition...
Frosh Force. Five true freshmen played against the Leprechauns. None recorded any statistics unless noted.
Bench Bunch. The following non-injured non-frosh scholarship players did not appear against the Irish.
M*A*S*H Unit. The following players did not appear against USB due to injury. I am basing this on both official reports and reporting done by Cardboarders. Please do correct me if I am wrong.

Walk-On Union Watch. Only two non-scholarship players got PT against ASU. No statistics were recorded in the game unless noted.
  • Safety Patrick Fields, 5th year, was one of three starting safeties, and had two tackles.
  • RB Caleb Robinson, jr., had the best game of his career, coming in for an injured Casey Filkins. He had five carries for 28 yards, and two catches for 16 yards.
In addition...
  • WR Brycen Tremayne, a 5th year former walk-on, had five catches for 60 yards.
  • P Ryan Sanborn, a senior former walk-on, had a good game, with three punts for a 43.7-yard average. His longest punt was 51 yards, two were downed inside the opponent's 20 yard-line, and none went for touchbacks.
  • ILB Spencer Jorgensen, a senior former walk-on, had a tackle.

Frosh Force. Three true freshmen played against ASU. None recorded any statistics unless noted. Interestingly, neither Mudia Reuben nor Sam Roush played.
  • DL Jaxson Moi had another productive game, with three tackles (including a three-yard TFL) and a PBU. He has played every game this season.
  • QB Ashton Daniels ran once for a yard as our wildcat QB.
  • Edge Ernest Cooper made his collegiate debut, and what a debut it was! Five tackles including a four-yard sack, a solo TFL, and a shared TFL with Lance Keneley. Stud.

Bench Bunch. The following non-injured non-frosh scholarship players did not appear against the Devil Dogs.
  • Quarterback
    • Ari Patu, so.
  • Running Back
    • none
  • Fullback
    • none
  • Tight End
    • Bradley Archer, sr. Injured?
  • Wide Receiver
    • Jayson Raines, so.
    • Bryce Farrell, jr.
      Colby Bowman, sr.

  • Offensive Tackle
    • Jack Leyrer, so. Injured?
  • Offensive Guard
    • none
  • Center
    • Drake Metcalf, jr. Injured?
  • Defensive Line
    • Zach Buckey, so.
    • Austin Uke, so.
  • Edge
    • Aaron Armitage, so.
  • Inside Linebacker
    • Ese Dubre, so.
  • Cornerback
    • Brandon Jones, jr.
    • STM, sr. Injured?
    • Nicolas Toomer, sr.
  • Safety
    • Jaden Slocum, so.
    • Caleb Ellis, so.
    • Mitch Leigber, so.
    • Omari Porter, jr.
  • Special Teams
    • P Connor Weselman, so.

Lots of corrections:

- STM had a few (awful) snaps on defense.

- Aaron Armitage was hurt.

- I believe Jack Leyrer is still hurt.

- If Spencer Jorgensen having a tackle (he only played on STs, and had that tackle on a kick return) counts, then Austin Uke and Omari Porter playing on FG Block, Bradley Archer playing on FG kick and KO return, and Mitch Leigber / Caleb Ellis / walk-on Jason Kaul all playing KO cover should also count. Scotty Edwards also worked his way onto KO cover, and walk-on Jason Thompson was the punt returner at the end of the game.
   - If only playing STs DOES NOT count, then Jorgensen does not count and neither do any of these other guys.

- Speaking of Bradley Archer above, he is not hurt and has been straight-up passed by Roush at TE.

- CJ Hawkins may not have recorded any statistics, but he had a few snaps on offense. First all season, I believe.

- Mudia Reuben and Sam Roush both played a significant number of offensive snaps (17 and 19 respectively), as they have all season, and I have no idea how that wasn't reflected in the participation report.

Yep, a bunch of guys played but only a few Can Play.

RE: 2022 Stanford Football Personnel - Langdude - 11-01-2022

Thanks, SMF. Appreciated as always.

You were speaking of the ASU game and not the UCLA game, correct?

The participation report for the ASU game is indeed shockingly short.

They did. I had erroneously not deleted that sentence from the ASU game personnel report after Sam's correction, and it survived into the UCLA report when I cut-and-pasted the section headers. Now fixed.

Metcalf is healthy.

Buckey had 4 snaps in garbage time.

Dubre played STs.

I believe Slocum was hurt/didn't make the trip.

RE: 2022 Stanford Football Personnel - BostonCard - 11-19-2022

What happened to Wyrick?  Last year, as a true freshman, he did some good things as nickel back.  This year, he’s not playing.  Doghouse? Regression? Overrecruited?

He was on the sideline with a headset and clipboard, and wearing at least the top of his uni, but I couldn't tell whether he was in sweats (i.e. injured) or not.

Notably, he played in 4 games earlier this season (and graded solidly) before getting hurt in some capacity, so I believe he may or may not be healthy at this point and we're now redshirting him. He has a shirt available due to playing as a true frosh last year, and it's not worth burning that potential extra year for a couple meaningless end-of-season games. It's not regression or being overrecruited, unless you count Fields coming in and McGill returning healthy (recall he wasn't last year) as "being overrecruited."

Re-stuck this thread, but only until Langdude makes the 2023 version (which I think is after the second signing period).
