RE: Stanford Baseball - JJJ - 03-25-2022

As far as I'm concerned, Esky can stay as long as he wants. Teams have rough patches. Hopefully this one ends today for us.

RE: Stanford Baseball - Spiny_Norman - 03-25-2022

This has been an especially rough patch for the relief corps. Stanford has been tied or has led in the late innings in each of its last 5 losses. But a mix of bad pitching and bad defense has turned Ws into Ls.

Game 1 vs. Oregon - Ducks score 1 in the 8th, 1 in the 9th, win 4-3
Game 2 vs. Oregon - Ducks score 6 in the 8th, 2 in the 9th, win 16-13
Game 1 vs. Arizona - Wildcats score 2 in the 8th, win 3-2
Game 2 vs. Arizona - Wildcats score 5 in the 8th, win 6-5
Game 3 vs. Arizona - Wildcats score 6 in the 7th, 1 in the 8th, win 10-3

Even in Stanford's lone win over the past 2 weekends, they gave up 1 in the 7th, 1 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th to Oregon, but Stanford held on for a 10-6 win.

It really challenges a team's resilience to come back after a stretch like that.

At what point will folks re-examine the assumption that Esquer was a great hire?

There is still a TON of ball to be played this year, so there's no reason to overreact.  Right now on a down slope, but hopefully the winning (or at least playing well) will return soon.

But I'll be interested to see where the program is in 1-2 years - then we'll have a much better picture of coaching front.

Give me a BREAK, with this talk about the coaching hire. Wasn't it just last year that this program was in the CWS??? YES, this team is playing bad, but I think it has a lot to do with how Brock Jones is playing. Someone else needs to step up and take that supporting role. Jones is not playing up to the standards set by all his press, and the team is reacting to it! What else is Jones' doing to help this team out?

I am sure with Jones' speed, he has the green light on the base paths. Is Jones using the fact that he is being walked so many times, to steal that base and put himself in scoring position? It's not all about the longball, it is other areas of the game that he should be utilizing to help this team! Damn, they put that shift on him, and he is taking strikes on the outer third of the plate. How about hitting against the shift, or laying one down to get on?

This program has won a Pac title, hosted 2 regionals, and gone to the CWS in the last 4 years, and this was a questionable hire??? What makes Garko so great. If Garko wanted to be a college HC, he would have stayed at UOP to show he could turn a program around and make it a contender, he bailed because it seems like he did not want to put in the work. Esquer was coaching in this conference before, so what makes everyone think that Garko could have come in here and do a better job?

Streaks like this happen in baseball, this team obviously has not made it easy on themselves. Good that WSU coming to town this weekend, and hopefully they can pull their heads out and play better ball. A series win will be good, and sweep would be better. This conference beats up on each other, so anything can happen. Oregon, they did not put that team away when they should have, they let that one get away from them. U of A, the same outcome, had the lead and then pissed it away. If they were getting boat raced every series, that would be a different story.

I would say U of A is sending a message to Jay Johnson for leaving!

RELAX!

The only "question" about the hire, at least in this thread, was the assumption that it was a great one.  No one said it was a mediocre, let alone bad, one.

But let's keep your post and other in this thread and see how they age.

RE: Stanford Baseball - Ballbuster - 03-25-2022

The story tonight is the pitching!!!! Not only does the pitching give up the lead, but give up 7 runs with 2 outs!!!!

RE: Stanford Baseball - BobK - 03-26-2022

Great comeback win tonight and wonderful to see Bruno get the win

Great news!  Maybe that will be the spark that gets this team back on track.

RE: Stanford Baseball - Madera86 - 03-26-2022

Jones just crushed a pitch to put Stanford up 7-0.

He is struggling with his batting average, and he leads the team in strikeouts, but he is second in on base percentage and has reached base in every game so far. He also leads the team in walks with 20.

RE: Stanford Baseball - BobK - 03-26-2022

Stanford wins 7-1. Great pitching plus three HRs.

RE: Stanford Baseball - JJJ - 03-27-2022

Loaded lineup with Barrera playing 2B, VMart DH, Bowser batting 8th!

RE: Stanford Baseball - Madera86 - 03-27-2022

Interesting symmetry: we score 8 runs in the fifth on two outs and four hits. Looks to me like we were patient at the plate as opposed to the previous inning when we seemed to jump on the first pitch.

Let's hope the symmetry compared to the first game ends there.

RE: Stanford Baseball - BobK - 03-27-2022

A sweep 8-3 today.

Oh, man, helped by 4 WSU E’s, wild pitches, etc.

Somewhere Duffy and Dot are laughing about the little purse acting like a belt buckle on the Stanford kids. LOL, we didn't have any signs at State.

RE: Stanford Baseball - Spiny_Norman - 04-01-2022

Meanwhile on the diamond, Stanford is playing a series vs. #3 Oregon St in Corvallis. In game 1, Stanford has struck out 19(!!) times in 9 innings and only has 3 hits. But they have kept Oregon State from scoring. Game is 0-0 going to the 10th. Stats here - https://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=396137

Jones 5K.  1-0 Stanford bottom 10. Quinn Mathews in to pitch.

And Stanford wins! Interesting decision to give the ball to Mathews. But he retired the side 1-2-3.

1-0 is the final in 10.

Happy with a Stanford win in any sport despite the platinum sombrero and using Quinn today. A positive!

Team needs a closer. Let’s see how Uber does today.

Uber is pronounced “you-ber” according to the guys on tv.  Leadoff triple, then proceeded to strike out the side!
