Did I miss something? Has anyone ever documented he has an attitude problem? Seems somewhat of an introvert that enjoys his privacy. . . .
Not him a "bad attitude" but rather a re-calibration on what his market value would be. 6.5M guaranteed money looked pretty good after no trade offers and no obviously compelling free-agent prospects.

3 They know o-line sucks.

4. They knew someone, perhaps Seattle, would pick him up if they released him. Zero compensation . . . .

Have to disagree Phogge. I think it says nothing about Lance one way or the other. Given that nobody made a great offer (or maybe any offer, who knows?) for JG, this is the best deal the 49ers could get and the best deal JG could get. I suspect the Seattle interest for JG as a free agent turned out to not be as attractive as 6.5M guaranteed money and another bite of the apple next year when JG is at least healthy. Changes little if anything for the team going forward.

JG would have gotten zero from SF had he been released.  He passed a physical prior to training camp thus nullifying any monies owing from SF.  However, he would have received at least $7 million from another team had he been released by SF and signed elsewhere.

SF was boxed in because they couldn’t get a draft choice for him and because neither Sudfield or Purdy appear to be viable replacements should Lance get hurt.

Given the unlikelihood of Lance getting through a full season uninjured given the sieve-like OL, SF had to have a qualified back-up.

Good move by the Niners.

No compelling free agent prospects? Wouldn't that be tampering if another team contacted him or his agent while he was still under contract with the Niners?

If so, why did JG take the pay cut from 24 million to stay with the niners? He didn't have to do that. If he could get more elsewhere, why not force the issue and get released? My answer is that the niners money was guaranteed and no other team would give him that.

My somewhat out there hypothesis is that JG (feels weird typing that because those are my initials) has seen the competition up close and thinks he can do better.

Good move by the Niners.

Yes.  Correct on the release. I was wrong. Should have said less than cap hit.

Good move?  Yes and no.  Nice to have a qualified backup.  And the base is less than the cap hit if he was released. But no, cause it’s not so good to have Lance looking over his shoulder.

Let’s run a scenario.  Niners open with Bears. Let’s say Lance stinks. Bears (with a QB Niners could have probably gotten at 12 - or traded much less to move up a couple spots) beat them in a low scoring game (17-14 for example). Fans will be howling.  Question is how locker room reacts.

Lance has enough pressure.  This, imo, increases it.

The Niners, imo, have handled this poorly from the ‘2021 draft forward. To make the move they did, they should have been as certain as possible that Lance is going to be a star.  There is no such thing as “can’t miss”.  Elway was about as close as they come. Denver didn’t trade a whole lot more for Elway, than Niners did for Lance.

I agree that the pressure on Lance could increase if things do not go well for the niners. If the problem is the o-line, I think the locker room, if not the fans, will realize JG would not make it better. He wouldn't survive. If Lance makes a lot of mistakes, I agree the pressure will mount. I am not sure having JG there will make it mount faster, because fans would boo mistakes by an expensive #1 draft choice whether there was a qualified backup or not. However, having JG there isn't reassuring to Lance, I am certain :-).

I thought I read on this thread that Purdy looked great. Now who could have opined that with such conviction?

Anyway, I digress. You're correct; SF painted themselves into a corner. Pretty poor front office work, unless they're concerned that Lance isn't all that he's cracked up to be, contrary to plenty of arm chair GMs. . . .

Purdy is a long way from being a capable NFL QB.  He looked ok v. preseason reserves (most of whom will never play a down in the NFL) but it was evident that he was forcing his throws.

I suspect he's headed for the practice squad. I wonder if he's a 'tweener? Super strong and fast, too short and arms too short for anything on the OL except center. They mentioned fullback, but they have an all-pro at FB, and Hokit waiting in the wings. And of course, he's never played at the Power 5 level, playing at Mercer, so he has some experiential challenges.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Phogge - 09-01-2022

They cut Hokit, he signed elsewhere and then got cut again.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - BobK - 09-01-2022

Poe is on the practice squad
Sermon cut Willis back

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Mick - 09-01-2022

Here's the 49er practice squad of 13 players. They are allowed up to 16, and developmental players like Alfredo Gutierrez don't count against that cap, according to Grant Kohn:

DL Alex Barrett, #9,
S Tashaun Gipson Sr., 4th, has started 132 games in NFL
OL Alfredo Gutierrez, #13
S Tayler Hawkins, #10, intercepted a rpeseason pass.
CB Qwuantrezz Knight, #7, intriguing UDFA, can play nickel.
WR Tay Martin, #8 rookie free agent
LB Marcelino McCrary-Ball, #5, may make the team next year.
OL Jason Poe, best player on practice squad, according to Grant Cohn
WR Willie Snead IV, #6, past his prime
DL Akeem Spence, #12, 30 years old.
OL Keaton Sutherland, #11, only center on squad.
DL Kemoko Turay, second best with multiple NFL sacks
WR Malik Turner, third best

The Niners picked up Cleveland's OG Blake Hance, who started eight games last season. Hance scores out as one of the best run blockers in the league (70+ rating), and one of the worst pass blockers (35 or so).

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - old spanish trail - 09-01-2022

Best re run, worst re pass, Hance ought to fit right in. Maybe they think they can make him better re pass.
