Great Stanford win! I was watching while at the Stanford range today. I saw Seay in there before she left for Gray Hawke - practice makes perfect! Big time miss by the Oregon assistant on the penalty for running over Zhang's ball. As others noted, it wouldn't have mattered, but finding that out likely didn't help her putting.
Can't wait to see Megha Ganne join this talented team....back to back!?! Let them enjoy this well deserved win with the target on their backs. Hat's off and Go Card!

I think that this is the toughest NCAA title to win. No other sport demands that teams compete for 6 straight days (including one double day of competition) over 2 different formats. And you are up against every other team in the tournament during stroke play before you go head-to-head in match play. The team that wins a women's or men's golf title is the toughest both physically and mentally. The NCAA championship tournament is a supreme test.
Stanford proved itself in every way over the last week. I'm just in awe of the way that they delivered. Think of how you feel standing over a 3 or 4 footer in your weekend golf game. Time and again, Stanford players during the match play knocked in those putts. They were so solid.
Two extra special highlights for me. Yesterday, with all of the pressure on her and danger on both sides of the 18th green, Brooke Seay delivered the shot of the tournament when she knocked her 2nd on the green on the par 5 and then lagged the eagle putt up close to win the hole, lock up her match and win the semifinal for Stanford. That was Tiger Woods-level of execution. Then today, after losing 3 straight holes and momentum swinging strong to Oregon, Aline Krauter knocked it stiff on the par 3 13th and rolled in the putt for a winning birdie.
I'm just so happy for this team. Congratulations to all of the players and especially to Coach Walker and Coach Sheils. Fantastic job all around.

I would say Oregon scored better than Stanford on the back nine, not outplayed. The aim for the team is to win, not win big.
The announcers talked a lot how Oregon was letting Stanford win the early holes with pars. Not much pressure on us in the front nine. And Seay and Krauter made just about every putt that mattered.

I was away at my university's graduation and returned home to this very good news. I've never been a golf fan before now, but I found this match play quite interesting and am elated at the outcome. This is a very nervy game.

Oregon played really nervous on the front nine. I think Stanford won somewhere around 15 holes making par, which is a pretty high number. Once they settled in on the back nine they played much better, and I'd argue they played better than Stanford down the stretch but it wasn't enough to overcome the leads that Zhang, Seay and especially Krauter built up on the front nine. Krauter was 6 up through 8 holes!

After the semis, the Oregon coach said they were going to celebrate their win. The Stanford coach said they were going to go to bed. Maybe that had something to do with the early lead and then being in a position to play safe on the back nine.

Yeah that got me too, especially when Coach Walker talked about it hopefully being her LPGA debut. Krauter is graduating and turning pro sometime after the Arnold Palmer Cup at the beginning of July. The exemption will benefit her far more than the rest of the team who will be amateurs.

What happened to Ye? Wasn't she top-20 in WAGR to start the season? All-American her first two years? Third-best scoring average in school history last year? Is she cooked or is there some reason her form dipped this year and we hope for a return to form?

Well, Krauter was 3-0 in match play for us, which will be hard for Ganne to beat. That being said, having another world class golfer up front will make it harder for opponents to get favorable match-ups.
I think the biggest thing next year will be Heck fully recovering from mono. She won the individual national title last year. She was 1-2 in match play this year (though the win against Georgia was critical, since Zhang lost her match). Zhang, and Ganne, and a full strength Heck, plus Seay (3-0 in match play) is one hell of roster!
All that being said, though, match play is capricious and we were only a couple holes away from losing in all three rounds.

Any chance that Zhang goes pro? The first non-basketball one-and-done I can remember was McEnroe, after he won the NCAAs his freshman year.

Anyone have thoughts on whether we see outgoing transfers? A strategic redshirt to give someone two years of eligibility as a grad transfer elsewhere? Zhang doesn't seem to be giving off any signals of turning pro anytime soon, but that sort of thing can change quickly when the dollar signs get larger and larger.

In their three matches, Seay was -6 and Krauter was even.
Kelly Xu, a two-time second team and one-time first team Rolex All American, also enters this fall.

Actually the first Stanford non-basketball one-and-done may have coincidentally been a female golfer: Mickey Wright.
No way to know who the first one-and-done was, but Wright was at Stanford for a single year before turning pro and becoming one of the greatest golfers of all time.

Earlier in this thread, somebody posted a link to an article that said Zhang was coming back. One thing that might take the pressure off is NIL money. If she can compete in the LPGA as an “amateur” and score sponsorships, the only difference between being a pro and being college eligible is being able to collect the prize money.
