After one inning Utah up 1-0.   It could have been worse.   Runner thrown out trying to steal second with runner held on third.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - BobK - 04-14-2023

1-1 now top of 5

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - terry - 04-14-2023

Stanford is lucky to have allowed just one run so far. Utah has 9 hits and a walk in the first four innings, but just one run.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - Softball Fan - 04-14-2023

After 12 hits Krause comes in to relieve Vawter in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Stanford is in trouble.  Vawter struggled all game long; maybe should have been relieved before things started getting out of hand.

After five innings Utah up 4-1.  Costly error by third baseman Emily Jones.  This may be too much of a deficit to overcome.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - d4cohn - 04-14-2023

Card lost the first one of a tough three game road set 4-1 in very cold SLC.
Stanford will look to bounce back tomorrow in Game #2.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - BobK - 04-15-2023

Canady is the starting pitcher.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - Softball Fan - 04-15-2023

First inning another Stanford error got the Cardinal into some trouble but Canady ends the inning with three straight strikeouts.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - d4cohn - 04-15-2023

Stanford with a great all around showing today, leading 3-0 heading to T6. Card in solid position
to even the series and would force an absolutely massive contest tomorrow.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - BobK - 04-15-2023

Just like that it’s 3-3. Come on Card

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - d4cohn - 04-15-2023

It appears that I woofed it. :( Card blow a 3-0 lead in final two innings, losing
both the game and the series. Cardinal face a must-win tomorrow against a tough
opponent.

I was watching a SEC game on ESPN.  The announcers were complimentary of Stanford ranked at #5 in the country.  Well, after losing three in a row to Utah there has to be questions about Stanford pitching.  It's good but is it good enough to compete in the World Series of softball.  With Canady on a short leash limited to a low pitch count there really are only two pitchers right now.

Sad trip this far. BYU tomorrow for Stanford

The tough thing about being a top ranked team, as one sees from the jubilant celebrations from Utah, you get everyone's best effort. Utah is a very good offensive team and playing at altitude, the ball travels, leading to more scoring. I actually think stranding 9 runners today was the issue. We had runners on the corners with only 1 out up 1 in T7; plating that runner from third would have been a brobdingnagian boost.

Our team is still a pretty young team, so it seems like we are still getting experience closing out close games on the road, with a motivated crowd and team.

The series at home against UW to close out regular season play becomes very big; I think we still get a top 8 seed, in part because I think we will win that series at home against UW, but I wouldn't be surprised if our seeding belied our RPI ranking, because if I being objective (and temporarily take my fan hat off), I think getting swept on the road at Utah and UCLA, losing to Duke, losing to OU, we haven't pulled off many top-end wins (other than the road wins at UGA). And by top-end I mean wins against top 8, if not top 16 competition. There is something to be said for winning the games you are supposed to win and avoiding bad losses, which we have done a spectacular job of doing.

But I worry whether a lack of top-end of top-end wins will lead to a top 16 seed as opposed to top 8.

Stanford beat BYU 1-0 today. Canady started and itched to 17 batters a very good sign

Bob always has creative things to say.

Emily Jones was the starting 3B all season.  Made a costly error in the first game against Utah and hasn't been in the lineup since then.  Ouch.

Team on a roller coaster.  Swept by UCLA.  Sweeps Arizona.  Swept by Utah.  Next up three game series against Cal.

Good to see the team pick up a tough road win today at BYU, which after our own experiences this weekend, or even 40-4 Clemson losing at 16-28 NC State that has already seen its HC and most of its coaching staff fired mid season, is not a given.

Baseline goal for this weekend at home against Cal has to be at least a series win. I really think we can get a sweep, as Cal's pitching against UW looked really poor.

Stanford does continue to get help from other top 8 competitors losing. In addition to the terrible loss Clemson suffered (and they needed extra innings to avoid the series loss to NC State), LSU lost its series at Auburn, and UW got run-ruled in Corvallis to 12-25-1 Oregon State 11-1.

Three teams that are surging right now (albeit against weaker competition) is Florida State, Duke and now Northwestern.

Stanford is 16-0 at home.  Cal series at home so hopefully the trend continues.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - BobK - 04-17-2023

Canady is itching back to the full 7 innings
