Put differently, there is no disincentive to be in the portal if you've got your degree. The worst that can happen is that you hear about your other options, and the NIL collective ponies up more money to entice you to stay here.
I'm not exactly clear on how the portal works, but I assume that at other schools, the disincentive is that you risk losing your spot. Another inbound transfer might take it. This is clearly not a risk to any football student-athlete at Stanford in 2023.
What is the over/under on the number of scholarship players that we will have on the roster in 2023?

Are you sure? There are reasons to believe the head coach would want to play guys that would be around next year. The head coach may also not take kindly to guys he doesn't know and has no relationship with throwing his program under the bus (by their actions) and then later saying they didn't mean it. I wouldn't take it as a given that all would be forgiven because we need the bodies. If a statement needs to be made, here would be the golden opportunity.

Why not take Taylor at face value, especially given the way he delivered the message? It's clear from the videos that he wanted them back.
And it's rational. We will struggle to field a team of competent scholarship players at multiple position groups in 2023. The young guys are going to get plenty of reps, no matter how many outbound transfers come back (and it's not looking like many.)
I think Taylor correctly assessed that he should try to re-recruit these guys back into the program because he might pick up better players than through the inbound transfer process, which remains completely unproven at Stanford. It's probably not working out, but it was a smart move.
Clearly, many of our transfers are good enough for other decent programs to want them, and some have multiple years of eligibility remaining. Two of our starting OL's are joining the #2 ranked team in the country.

Taylor has no choice but to roll out the red carpet and welcome any and all players back. It's easy for other incoming coaches, such as Riley or Sanders, to count on getting 20, 30 transfers if needed. How many will Taylor be able to land, even if the admin starts to revise its stance on grad transfers? Given the hemorrhaging, it'll soon be about bodies, if it isn't already. Enough guys to field the necessary practice squads, for instance. I've said it before: I hope they're looking at incoming transfer options among the Ivies and Northwesterns/Dukes/Vanderbilts/Rices.
As much as I loathe this new transfer policy, I don't blame the players for leaving one bit, especially the grad transfers with a Stanford degree in hand (or soon to be). Even if I liked my time on the Farm and the new coach, I'd jump in a heartbeat for a free grad school experience and a chance to play for a winning team in a new environment. I might do that even if Stanford were fit to have a decent season next year.

It’s up to the administration. The old Stanford football model has been cremated. Either adapt or just make football a coed club sport.
Right now the team is unwatchable. Even Cactus’ winless squad was more exciting.

Oh you misguided one. Cactus Jack threw it more than any other college team. Most of the defeats were not blowouts. In the 1960 season the penultimate game was very exciting, played in a down pour before about 5,000. Norman scored on a keeper around right end but Dean Hinshaw was caught for holding and OSC won.
The ‘62 BG, Curtice’s last, was great with Chris Jessen throwing an end around TD pass to Bob Howard. And if Clark Weaver wasn’t hurt early in ‘63 Ralston would have had a far better QB to work with than Dick Berg.
I could offer more evidence but that’s enough. Don’t want to overtax your near-Octogenarian mind.

My first game ever, went with my Dad. Norman had 401 passing yds and was something like 34-39. Chris Burford was open all day. But Cal won on an 80-yd pass from Randy (Gold?) to Gael Barsotti. Down on the field afterward, I got Barsotti to sign my program. My Dad, a Cal grad, was happy.

Cool, back to the transfer portal.
It's very clear we are actively looking at transfers. I have no idea what the process is to get them in, but pretty much all our assistants are following both grad and undergrad transfers from other schools. This has never happened before.

He probably would be better of committing to Bloomberg. He is going to need a real job somewhere and right now the NFL isn't looking good.
