Betts will have to become a better perimeter defender if she is going to play major minutes. Otherwise teams are going to switch guards on to her and drive right by.

I don’t post often but I feel like a few of us need to take a DEEP BREATH. It’s a new day. Our beloved team is subject to the same forces as every other team. We aren’t entitled to a bubble of basketball bliss. I choose to embrace the program despite all the noise. The kids who stay have chosen to stay. They work hard. They represent the school well. I’m with them - despite changes to the sport you can love or hate. The kids who left - they’re gone. Bye. I believe all the noise will have our coaches and players focused and pulling as one next year - something they seemed to lack last year. It won’t be pretty. We’re underdogs. Embrace the suck. Let’s GO.

Assuming she left for NIL reasons instead of happiness is again probably unfounded and ignorant .
Maybe look more to the coaching staff and treatment of players and Unkept promises and try to understand how hard a decision it probably was for a kid to leave Stanford after just one season.
Seems like it just wasn’t just her who felt that way either.
To think the allure of being at Stanford trumps everything else is just ludicrous

Remember at one point, we thought we had the inside track for the top 2 players in the 2022 class. We had Betts committed and were confident about Rice. Now, UCLA has flipped the script and will have both top recruits. Last time that happened was Uconn in 2012 (where top 2 players went to the same college) with Moriah Jeffersen and Breanna Stewart. That duo ended up 4/4 in winning national titles.
I’d much rather see Betts at UCLA than Notre Dame. UCLA has never made a Final 4 so this would be Coach Closes most talented roster. Although I still wouldn’t put her in the exceptional coach column.
Totally unfounded and ignorant.

So much for all the talk about playing for a Black coach. I guess Dawn did not want her. Instead, she can look forward in her junior and senior years to jetting to places like Champagne and Iowa City.
Lauren or her parents, what’s the end goal here? Why hide behind several usernames? Seems kind of mental at this point. If you are going to stay “anonymous” (but not really) without disclosing your problems with the coaches (and throwing several players under the bus that have seemingly only been outwardly kind to you/your daughter), then I am perplexed at your end goals?
Here is my end goal as a bitter alum. I hope your departure pushes Tara into retirement asap and the Athletic Dept then scraps any plans of Kate being transitioned into that job, and they hire a really talented bball coach from the WNBA ranks. If it gets Muir fired, all the better. You leaving accelerates that goal in my mind so best of luck (although not too much against Stanford and teams I like).
As for UCLA, eh, Cori’s staff is better (but I think very little of Stanford’s current staff) but let’s see how you manage sitting through all those “not you, not me, but us” self-flagellation exercises day in and day out that only result in Cori crying, the players crying, the Bruins mascot crying and early exits in the tournaments that matter (and Cori blaming you over her tears) and then report back. Talented roster. No doubt. Heavy post rotation. Heavy. Cori is better at substituting than Tara (but everyone in Division 1 bball is), but there are still only so many minutes available and a lot of post to keep happy.
Edited to add: If they add another All-American on the perimeter, then I will revise my statement above of course(lol). But it’s between Kim and Geno next year (assuming Paige is healthy) and everyone else is playing for 3rd place.

Boom. Betts going to a place where the coach talks openly about NIL deals and finding opportunities for her players. Totally a fit, especially given her preexisting relationship with Coach Close. It's not a coincidence that UCLA is winning the recruiting game. Close is also playing things really smart. I loved her quote in the NYT article: "Does Charisma want to make more money and stay in college and get massages, fly charter, have everything paid for, have a nutritionist and her own trainers that are paid for? Or does she want to have none of those things and fly Southwest?" She puts forth the image that if you come to UCLA, we'll make sure you get paid and treated like a star. And you'll ALSO get a great education and play on a national championship contender. Unfortunately, this is what the top players have come to expect. This is what Stanford needs to do. We can offer all that. We have no chance if we continue to recruit only on the value of the diploma. We have to get the players paid PLUS the diploma. Then we can win the recruiting battles.

Lauren or parents or Stanfanforever or thetreerulesall or whatever the latest username, if you want to really be heard, posting on this board is a total waste of your time.
Here are the emails to Muir and the Athletic Committee, let it all out to them. Unload the chopper (as the kids say). You can tell them all the “insider” knowledge that we are just too ignorant to know about.
athleticdirector@stanford.edu
boardoffice@stanford.edu (To Athletic Committee)
Leave your mark. Ensure there are no future disillusioned Laurens that feel like they need to forego a Stanford degree and move to a public university (with a crowded post rotation) to be truly happy (though Los Angeles is a great place to live if you have a lot of money).
Also, those who want to make changes in Nil, email Muir and the Board about that too and make sure to mention you think it’s time to transition a new visionary leader for WBB that understands how to compete in today’s post-Nil/transfer portal world.

Last, you should check out what Dominique Onu had to say about Cori that caused Dominique to leave UCLA during the season and move to USC. Check her TikToc and YouTube channel. Slip into her DMs. I mean, that is what a smart person would have done before they signed another LOI, right? Get a complete picture - the good and the bad - and then make a reasoned decision, not an emotional one. The grass is NOT always greener. I don’t particularly like Tara but she is not clever enough to be some evil mastermind that makes false promises to lure unsuspecting #1 players to Stanford and not play them. Betts was the first in recent memory and it was only because there was a logjam at the post position of Top 10 and Top 20 McDonalds AA post players. And Tara mentioned during the season that she wasn’t handling it well (giving people minutes on the court) and that she was the problem. I mean, nothing changed but do you think any other Top 10 coach would make such an admission? Usually a top player does not start right away but by mid-season they are either starting or playing a lot. See Chiney Ogwumike, and Chiney was a unanimous #1 player, and then #1 draft pick in WNBA. Didn’t start but played and by the next year, Tara would have played her 50 minutes a game except there are only 40 minutes in a game. Did Haley start? I wasn’t watching that year too closely. Probably only because Dijonai was injured or something like that and it wasn’t at the 4, her best position, and then she got injured. That is how Tara operates - never evolving. Hannah went from barely playing 3 years behind the Hulls to playing 40 minutes/game. Tara is very predictable.
Cori is way more clever than Tara (which admittedly, doesn’t take much) and is more of a mastermind. She will have you convinced come November that the reason you probably won’t be starting there either (or playing more than 15 min/game) is (1) your fault, and (2) Tara’s fault for not playing you more your freshman year and how her current players are much more experienced than you so should start before you. And you will believe her. Because let’s face it, from what I can tell, you will be no match for Cori.
Edited to add: If I were you, I would have chosen Notre Dame for a variety of reasons but especially the “depth” chart. We will see how it all turns out in due time. I am emotional too and would have wanted to go head to head with Stanford for the next 3 years just to show them they should have started me. But I try not to make emotional decisions and after a good night’s sleep I would have quickly concluded ND was the better option for starter minutes plus they play A LOT more zone defense in one year than UCLA will play in the next 3 years. I think that defensive scheme would be more beneficial and ensure lots of playing time plus ND just has such a fluid, lovely offensive scheme, and better track record getting “starters” to the WNBA.

SF Chronicle today had a story that claimed two sources told them Betts transferred due to playing time, which is consistent with the tweets from her mother, so I think it is very clear by now that playing time was the major issue, no matter what excuses get tossed out. What did she expect coming onto a team with so many very good and experienced posts including one All-American? I think she should have played more at the end of the season but her minutes were not egregiously low given the post depth. Next year she would have played a lot more, probably starts. No coach can honestly promise playing time or starting. A recruiting ranking means nothing. You don't get to jump the line because you were ranked highly.

I got a kick out of the poster who said we are having a meltdown. Sure Okay. But please note you will find negative comments in any thread (even though most are positive) and will probably choose to focus on the negative. Notably, however, they focus on the “logjam” and who will be on the outside looking in and speculating who will transfer out because there aren’t enough minutes to go around. I’d already forgotten about Antsy. And I wouldn’t be too sure Christeen will be on the outside looking in with Antsy.

I wonder if playing time refers to expected playing time for last year and this upcoming year: perhaps expectation was Brink slides to 4 so Betts at 5 but Brink wasn’t hitting mid range and 3 point shots so that did not work out — which shut down the deal.

I think Brink’s mid range by the end of the year was pretty good. The full context is that you had two All-Americans (Brink and Jones) who had recently led the team to a national championship two years ago. Both were definitely going to see a lot of playing time. However, both did not shoot the ball well from 3 last year. So adding another non 3 point shooting post to Brink and Jones would have made the offensive spacing terrible. I was still open to seeing it because our offense even with that spacing wasn’t great. But next year with no Jones would have been very different. Brink could have flourished at the 4 with Betts at the 5. But now Betts will have to compete against Bessoir, Dugalic, Sontag, Iwuala and Muse for playing time. I bet a couple of those players transfer next year.

Or transfer this season. The portal is still open as far as I know. Dugalic didn’t want to play behind Sabally and Prince at Oregon but you think she will play behind Bessoir, Betts, Sontag, etc? I am thinking “nope” unless the Nil money is really good.
Pre-injury, Dugalic was as good as the Oregon Freshman post this year. Post-injury and under Cori’s “better you, better me” mind control BS for two years, who knows.

Seems a reach to think she wouldn't play next year. This playing time stuff...no one knows the main reasons that went into the decision except Lauren and her immediate family. What gets told to (or fabricated by) social media tweets and reporters, or even to friends, is untrustworthy information. Just as I don't trust the social media post from the mom about "representation matters". Which was it? It's lots of stuff, but not just playing time. The Betts family isn't blind. They know how stacked up everything was last year, and how thin Stanford is at the post going forward. It doesn't take a genius to figure out she'd be playing a ton next season, and she'd be the lead dog the years after that plus she'd end up with a Stanford degree. So...transfer becauses of LAST YEAR'S PLAYING TIME even though it's already behind her? I don't buy it. Plus, as others have pointed out she's now transferred into a school with MORE competition at the post. Doesn't make much sense. Still think there's way more to this story. Will be fascinating to see what develops for her and other big name transfers over the years.

I posted all along this past season I thought Tara was playing Betts about the right amount of time. Betts wasn't ready the beginning of the season for the speed of D1 WBB. In high school she could dominate against 5'10" post players based on height alone. I also thought all season she would be much improved sophomore year and was looking forward to her progress.
The area I feel Tara could be criticized on playing time is there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to it at times; particularly playing someone for two minutes and then taking them out. Prechtel is the player who might have reason to question playing time more than Betts or anyone else on the team.

Thank you. Glad someone else is finally on the Ashten was the only person with reason to complain train. I’ve been on the train all season. Ashten was drafted in the 3rd round based on 2 minutes of playing time a game (if that). Had she played starter minutes as she should have, she would have been a late 1st round pick. And she showed a lot of maturity, got two valuable Stanford degrees and still got drafted. That is the ultimate “f-u” IMO to Tara and her decisions. Ashten went from 6th player of the year to playing 0 minutes in a lot of games this year.
The irony is Ashten got screwed over to accommodate Betts and the pressure to make sure the #1 player had playing time. And by season end, Kiki even got less time to play Betts more next to Brink. And with all that, Tara still couldn’t keep Betts on the roster or even happy it seems.
And what lesson did Tara learn from all her poor decisions this year?
