You are correct, sir:

1B, 939
LF, 673
3B, 634
2B, 628
RF, 589

And he played 73 games in center field, a position in which he was clearly overmatched. Actually, the only position in which he didn't have negative Rtot was LF and RF, he had career +46 Rtot in LF/RF. His worst position was probably third base, career -34 Rtot, average -8 Rtot per season at 3B.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2024 - Mick - 04-28-2024

Arguably, if one were to select the best players by position in the history of the NY/SF Giants, one might end up with the following lineup (with career home runs):

Catcher -- Buster Posey, 158
First Baseman -- Willie McCovey, 521
Second Baseman -- Jeff Kent, 377
Shortstop -- Brandon Crawford, 146
Third Baseman -- Matt Williams, 378
Left Fielder -- Barry Bonds, 762
Right Fielder -- Mel Ott, 511
Center Fielder -- Willie Mays, 660
DH -- Orlando Cepeda, 379
Starting Pitcher -- Christy Mathewson

My question: Is this the best "franchise starting team" amongs all MLB franchises? The starters have 3,892 career regular season home runs amongst them. And Christy Mathewson has the 3rd most wins all-time among pitchers.

Could another franchise even come close? Yankees? A's? Red Sox? Cardinals? Dodgers?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2024 - BobK - 04-28-2024

If SF only
Juan Marichal
Bobby Bonds

RE: Sports trivia thread 2024 - Mick - 04-29-2024

I was thinking in terms of the combined team, best in history, for a franchise. So the Yankees might look like this:

C Berra, 358
1B Gehrig, 491
2B Lazzeri, 169
SS Jeter, 260
3B A-Rod, 351
LF Ruth, 714*
CF DiMaggio, 351
RF Mantle, 536
P Pettite, 60.9 WAR

* Yes, I know Ruth is traditionally thought of as a right fielder, but he played almost as many games in LF (1,128 to 1,047)

I would argue that the Giants' all-time time is superior to the Yankees all time team, for sure in terms of HRs (3,892 to 2,516), and I'd rather have Mathewson pitching over any Yankee.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2024 - terry - 04-29-2024

Interesting question!

Who would you pick as DH for the Yankees? Winfield, Judge, someone else?

A possible line-up for the Cardinals --

C  Yadier Molina
1B  Albert Pujols
2B  Rogers Hornsby
SS  Ozzie Smith
3B  Ken Boyer (or maybe Scott Rolen?)
LF  Lou Brock
CF  Stan Musial
RF  Enos Slaughter
DH  Joe Medwick, Johnny Mize, or Mark McGwire
P  Bob Gibson

I'm cheating a bit by putting Musial in center field. He did play 300+ games as a CF, but he played a lot more games at LF, RF , and 1B. If I have to pick a true center fielder, then it might be Curt Flood (or possibly Jim Edmonds), with Musial moving to RF and Slaughter moving to DH.

I looked this up as it was killing me that I couldn't come up with the name so I'm disqualified.  Definitely not someone I associate with the Giants!

This guy joins Randy Johnson, Joe Morgan, and Steve Carlton as Giants affiliated HOFers mostly associated with another team.  I'd forgotten his year with the Giants.

Nope.  Neither Hershiser nor Bedrosian are in the HOF and Snider was inducted in 1980.

On this day 30 years ago, I batted in my 31st RBI to set a major league record for April.  Who am I?

Hmmhhh.... Thought it might be Bonds in his 2nd season as a Giant but ... no.  So some other mid-90s slugger.  1994 was a strike season.
