RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 08-24-2021

Miner is the setter and she looked good
Campbell was outstanding. Probably MB 1
Vicini looked good probably MB2
Leilah Smith played 2 1/2 sets then iced her knee and didn’t play the last set abd a half. Watching her play the knee she injured last sept or so is holding her back
Francis was present not suited up not injured Hambly said he couldn’t answer why that it’s personal. Guessing has been sick. Remember missed team photos on the 16th

The back row of olgilive, Beaven and Lougeay looked great. Very impressive. Confirmed to me by a former Stanford multi All American

Kipp is Right side Francis will be Left. If any doubt that’s how they introduced themselves That surprised us. On Francis absence the left side had Baird and Berty Baird is a big hitter as is Kipp. Berty looked good but not close as a hitter to Baird

Kipp hit very hard but maybe blocked too much. Fidalak out with her shoulder recovering from surgery

No chalk talks this year with Covid.

Palo Alto John Bar. Please add

That was an excellent summary.  I agree with every point you made.

Having said that here is my assessment for this young team's non-conference schedule.  They win the first two matches and lose the next six matches.  Inexperience and limited time playing together will be going up against veteran, talented teams.

If they win just one of the matches against the six powerhouse non-conference teams, I will be pleasantly surprised.  If Francis comes back at full strength during conference play it should be a big help.  They are one front row player short of having a decent offense.

I agree with what you said.  Defense and passing looked good.  Campbell in top form.

Could use more termination from the pin hitters.  I am still optimistic.  Especially if Sami Francis is back soon (fingers crossed).

Maybe Francis will be held out until the Nebraska match, so they don't have any scouting video on her.  (ha ha)

The first two matches are against Villanova and Temple.  I don't know what motivated Hambly to schedule these two teams.  The Philadelphia area is not known as a prep hotbed for volleyball so I don't think it was for recruiting purposes.

I tried to find some way to watch these matches with free streaming but there is none.  I'm going to buy a one month subscription to ESPN+ for the Temple game.  I checked KZSU radio. They seem to longer be broadcasting Stanford sports.

The Disney bundle is $13.99 for Hulu (with ads), Disney+, and Espn+. Just thought I would throw that out there.

I would be surprised if we lose all six.  We have a ton of talent and i would be surprised if we can't pull off an upset or two....

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - oldalum - 08-24-2021

thanks all for the comments on the scrimmage. I'm guessing we haven't had enough practice and game time in the past 12 months to be game-ready enough to beat any of the upcoming non-conference heavyweights, but I'd be very happy if we did.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 08-24-2021

I would be very very surprised at only 2 non Conference wins

Things could have been worse than what Stanford WVB went through the past two years.

https://volleyballmag.com/ncaa-volleyball-ivy-league-082521/

"First and foremost, Ivy League coaches will be dealing with rosters that have undergone more than the usual turnover. Besides losing the annual crop of seniors, teams also are dealing with losing the 2019 junior class, who would have been seniors in 2020, to graduation.

Per Ivy League rules, students are allowed to spend only eight semesters earning their undergrad degrees. That includes athletes.  The “free year” the NCAA granted athletes because of disruptions caused by the pandemic does not apply."

From Photos from Temple today appears no Leilah Smith or Sami Francis.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 08-25-2021

Here is a link to the photos.  My guess is L. Smith and Francis did not make the trip.

If photo #2 is the starting team it looks like Beaven is OH2. There have been all kinds of guesses about who fills the OH2 position. I would rather see a really good passer in the mold of McClure than a tall, inconsistent passer if those are the only two options.

First home match at Maples next Tuesday 31st against powerhouse Florida.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - pefloresjr - 08-25-2021

I've tried to do a complete reset on my expectations this year.  I'm really thrilled that we are able to field a full team.  I think it will take much of the season to gain the experience and intuitive unity needed to compete at a really high level.  It may even take until we get another infusion of talent next year to get to that level.  This year, as long as I'm seeing improvement, I will be happy.  Looking forward to putting on my mask and getting back into Maples.  Speaking of masks, anyone know where I can find some Stanford masks?  I've checked around and can't find any.

Cheers,
Pete F.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BACardinal - 09-27-2021

I don't know much about volleyball recruiting except for what I read on this board so is there anyone besides Mendelson (24) that is a possible recruit? Names are kind of hard to read so I added the jersey number.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 09-28-2021

I know of no 2022s except our commit Rubin
Younger Keefe and Millie Muir to Duke
We will have more room in 2023
Mendelson is a brobdingnagian basketball prospect also.
I’ll be back on 2023s in addition to Mendelson but one is a Turkey pin hitter maybe Krat. Or close

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - CompSci87 - 09-28-2021

I'm guessing that last sentence was meant to be about Turkish pin hitter Ipar Kurt. Various posts on Volleytalk have said she's interested in Stanford.

Thanks yes on Kurt

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 09-28-2021

I heard 6'3", 2023 OH Julia Blyashov (#19) is rumored to be a Stanford recruit.  BobK, you can correct me if there has been an update on her.  She has gotten minimal playing time in the U18 tournament.  The semi-finals against Italy is scheduled for 6:00 pm PT today.

Kurt is following all the Stanford players on Instagram.  I haven't heard anything that Hambly is recruiting her.

At the scrimmage Hambly said there should be more depth and a stronger team in 2022 and 2023.  I don't see it.  I'm not aware of any ranked backrow prep players rumored to be coming to Stanford.

The immediate question; BobK have you heard anything about the status of Oglivie.
