And in this weeks moments of gallows humor….
Hey at least we aren’t Iowa St with so far 10 players transferring including Crooks of course, or Tennessee with exactly 1 player on the roster. Yes 1. Do you forfeit a season? Play with 1 scholarship player and 14 walk ons? Ok obviously they will add transfers, but folks this isn’t sustainable.
And correction - as of 4 hours ago Tennessee has exactly as many rostered players as my fictional basketball team, meaning none. O. Nada. Nobody.

And as I corrected above Tennessee now has exactly nobody.
Do as the juju gods require moderators.

Thank you! First thing my brain did when I saw that message was Homer Simpson saying "at least we aren't Iowa St
so far...".

I don't want to tempt the woofing gods but agree with the point that Stanford is not alone in this problem. We used to think that Stanford might be immune because of our recruits and their interest in academics but we face the same problem that a lot of other schools face. On the Boneyard, there is a list of schools and the number of transfers out. At the top is Pitt with 13, then Iowa State with 10 and Penn State, Oklahoma State, Georgia and Arkansas all with 9. Then there are 13 more schools before you get to the cohort with 5 transfers out which includes Stanford.

My better half just pointed out that this will probably be the worst summer ever in the careers of college coaches.

BostonCard - 04-06-2026
I think there are a few separate things going on. The first is the effect of the transfer portal on women’s basketball generally, which I think has been bad for the sport. I think it sucks that teams like Iowa State and Tennessee have to rebuild essentially from scratch, and will have a de novo roster. As a fan, you are left with either taking the jacketree approach (forget the name in front of the jersey and just root for the team, regardless of who is playing for it), or lose interest.
If that were the only issue, I think that would generally be a bad thing for Stanford for the reason that recruiting inbound transfers is just going to be harder at Stanford, even if you make significant compromises on what admissions is willing to do, which has already happened (see, for example, the post-bac graduate program and a willingness to expedite evaluations of transfers). I don’t think it is a coincidence that Stanford is struggling in all the high profile sports (football, mens and women’s basketball, baseball) at the same time, and this is even affecting some non-high profile sports (Cannady transferring out of the softball team, the struggles this year with tennis, hell, the wrestling team is dealing with a deluge of outbound transfers right after its best season ever and has noted that other teams have a substantially larger budget), and we’ve seen transfers out of both the men’s and women’s swimming teams.
On top of that, there seems to be some specific allegations against Coach Paye or the rest of the coaching staff. At this point, I don’t think any of us are in a position to adjudicate whether they are true or not, but I did note that a couple of the portal announcements were decidedly cold towards the staff; “I have informed the coaches of my intention to transfer” (I think was the way Amborn phrased it), without even a perfunctory thanks or polite generic statement about the staff if for no other reason than to ensure you don’t burn bridges on your way out. Maybe it is all disgruntled and/or entitled players, but I think there is enough cause for suspicion that someone in the athletics department needs to investigate the allegations and determine whether a) they are true and b) whether they go so far as to be a fireable offense.
We may have a limited ability to influence the external environment (certainly would qualify as a threat in the SWOT diagram), but we certainly owe it to our players to foster a positive internal environment and do everything we can make sure that we aren’t exacerbating the situation.

Courtney Ogden is in the portal, leaving with one-year eligibility left. Players voting with their feet.

Let's go Donahoe? What are we exactly waiting for. That is getting ridiculous. We might not have enough players to field a team at this rate.

It’s sounding like it’s the players or the coach.. I think with leadership changes, we don’t lose these players. Hopefully they can hold off on committing to other programs and that there’s some quick resolution to this and we can bring everyone back and keep others from joining this growing list.

He's waited too long. He should've pulled the trigger on KP at the end of the season and maybe even have skipped the WBIT. We might lose everyone. I'm sure Chloe, Alex, and Hailee are being courted by many programs right now.

I think many of us fans who actually care about this program swirling down the toilet right now have already done so. But for those who haven't done it.

Exactly. We may not have known about the culture issues but someone in charge of Paye, her boss, should have known and done something about it right away. It is way too late now. There is simply no way to stop the implosion. With the way Stanford has used the portal can they even field a team next year? No matter what that team will be terrible. Paye can't stay at this point. I don't know how you find a credible coach at this point but letting her come back to preside over a decimated team is not the way either. Find the assistant who was not part of the toxic culture, if there is one, and have that person lead the team for a year. They get valuable experience as a head coach and the program gets a year to sort out the mess and figure out who to hire and how to proceed. Would that work? No idea. But get Paye out now.

insane as anyone there 3 years can probably just add a few courses this quarter or during the summer and graduate. AD needs to take immediate action. Unbelievable.

I believe the quote was Paye and "some assistants" so at least three people need to go, including Paye.
I had come up with a million scenarios as to why I was seeing what I was seeing, but nope. It's over, done, cooked. These players deserve better. And perhaps some of the staff.

Or we hire Lindy from UNLV. That is if Donahoe ever fires Paye. Virginia announced their new HC today. Coaching searches can move fast.

This is Donahoe's first test and he is failing it. Being a boss means that sometimes you have to make hard decisions. This is one of them. He's not in that executive role just to be a glad-handler and caretaker.

Lindy or Charmin?
Depending on where she lives, Charmin may not have to move to take the Stanford job.
