RE: WBB 2026-2027 season - 2006alum - 10-14-2026

Stanford is picked to finish 13th in the ACC. (Cal was picked to finish 10th.)

Just three or four seasons ago, we'd have been mighty disappointed to be picked to finish 13th....in the country. Now we aren't even cracking the top 10 of our conference.

Woof.

RE: WBB 2026-2027 season - petersalas - 10-15-2026

I thought this would mean more available single game tickets in lower sections, but what am l missing? Looks different than previous seasons..

yup same. expecting some small wbb crowds all season.

if such a decline in season ticket renewals doesn't get the attention of AD and department, i don't know what does.

This is kind of expected. But anyway, the women's volleyball team is not doing any much better, currently ranked 9-11 in the ACC.

Seeing how many people showed up at UCLA @ Cal's exhibition game last night, I was wondering if we'll even see that many people in the stands for any of our real games.

RE: WBB 2026-2027 season - Lorcan - 10-15-2026

It's worth noting that Carly Amborn didn't play for Cal in their exhibition against UCLA.

I really hope she's not injured or dealing with anything else. I sincerely wish her all the best at Cal - and hope she's able to impact a team looking to rise up in the ACC.

RE: WBB 2026-2027 season - bl82 - 10-23-2026

In advance of tomorrow's exhibition and with absolutely zero inside knowledge, I thought I'd throw this out to spark some discussion:

With only 5 returnees and 3 rotation players back from last year's team, taking a stab at this year's starters and rotation takes a lot more guesswork than usual. This year's roster has only 12 players, 11 of whom are (presumed to be) healthy, with frosh PG Jordyn Wheeler out for the year with an ACL injury.

You can lock down the three returning starters:
C/PF - Alexandra Eschmeyer 6-5 So (8 starts last year)
G - Hailee Swain 5-11 So (35 starts)
PG - Shay Ijiwoye 5-6 Jr (4 starts)

Realistically, that leaves two starting slots and four viable candidates. I'm guessing the starting lineup plays out as follows:
PF/SF - Ines Sotelo Miguez 6-3 Jr transfer from Michigan State and originally from Spain. Ines played top-notch Big Ten competition in her first two years in college and has a lot of international experience playing for Spanish national teams. This summer she was an All-Star Five selection at the U20 European championship, where she was Spain's leading scorer (12.4) and rebounder (6.4), with 1.4 assists per game. We are going to need both scoring and rebounding this year. While her stats from last year at MSU were modest (6.8 and 4.0), she had more assists per game (1.5) and steals per game (1.2) last year than anyone on Stanford's roster. So, I expect a solid, versatile contributor who can fill up the stat sheet and be a productive inside-first player.
SF/PF - Ilse de Vries 6-3 Jr transfer from Miami of Ohio and originally from the Netherlands. Ilse put up some excellent numbers last year at Miami (OH) in the Mid-American Conference, aka the MAC. Her 59 three pointers were 3x what Hailee contributed last year and her .386 shooting percentage from deep makes her a reliable outside threat and 6% better than anyone else on our roster. Ilse was the #3 scorer at Miami last year with 12.7 PPG and also added 4.9 RPG and 1.9 BPG. Her blocks are noteworthy and only a touch lower than Eschmeyer on a per-minute basis. I saw a little of her film and it looks like he offensive sweet spot is a pick and pop.

I considered two other players as potential starters, but you might be able to make a case for three:
F - Charlotte Tuhy 6-1 transfer from American Univ. Tuhy was the leading scorer (12.0) and rebounder (11.3!) on a bad American team in the Patriot league last year. She did everything, inside and outside (36 threes, almost twice what Hailee contributed last year) for American, leading the team in shot blocking too. Her top skill appears to be defensive rebounding. She also consistently guarded larger opposing post players. It's a brobdingnagian jump from the Patriot League to the ACC, but Tuhy has a diverse set of skills and will likely be a solid contributor off the bench, but she is hard to project and a brobdingnagian wild card. If she can improve upon last year's .327 three-point percentage (already higher than anyone else but de Vries), she could become indispensable.
C - Kennedy Umeh 6-5. Kennedy missed all of last year with a shoulder injury that required surgery. She showed flashes of brilliance as a frosh with strong play underneath, though she was not able to go all out for extended periods, which is common for frosh post players. Assuming she is fully healthy, she is capable of being a big and strong inside presence with defense and rebounding skills that perhaps only Eschmeyer might be able to match. Umeh showed some offensive ability around the basket and I vividly remember her flashing an impressive spin move in a pre-season video clip from last year.

Next most likely to break into a starting role would probably be...
F - Nora Ezike, the 6-2 Soph who had limited playing time last year, but showed off strong defense and athleticism. She distinguished herself in the 2025 U19 World Cup where she led Nigeria in scoring (12.1) and rebounding (7.0), including a stellar 25 points in 21 minutes against China. Her keys to playing time this year are rebounding and defense and if she can do that better than our other frontcourt options (not out of the question), she could earn a good deal of PT. I'm assuming that her offense is still a work in progress, but that frosh to soph jump can always yield surprises.

Two frosh guards will vie for guard minutes when Swain and Ijiwoye need a break. If we have foul trouble or injuries, out backcourt depth could immediately be a brobdingnagian liability. That said, the contenders are:
SG - Gracyn Gilliard 5-11. Gilliard was Indiana Miss Basketball last year. Because both Shae and Hailee can play point guard, Gilliard will likely be called upon for outside shooting depth and defense, though what little film I was able to locate showed her as more of a driver than a shooter.
PG - Elyse Ngenda 5-9. Ngenda can distribute, drive and has a soft touch from the outside. I normally would qualify her experience with some sort of snide comment about the level of competition in New Hampshire, but after seeing Okorie, I'm hoping lightning can strike twice.

Also:
C - Kiara Green 6-5. Green will have a tough time breaking into the front court rotation as a frosh, but sharpening her inside game against Umeh and Eschmeyer should help. Based on the film I saw, she needs more experience in the low post, better competition and more aggressiveness.

RE: WBB 2026-2027 season - BostonCard - 10-24-2026

Stanford played an exhibition against Pacific.

https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=687993

Just from the box score, Swain was the high scorer with 18 points on 50% shooting; Ijiwoye was right there with her, with 16 points and 4 threes. Tuhy grabbed 15(!) rebounds.  Starting lineup was Swain, Ijiwoye, Sotelo, Tuhy, and Eschmeyer.  De Vries did not start but played 11 minutes, without scoring (0/4 from he field).

I watched this afternoon's game from the lower level for the first time, since my wife and I gave up our long-time season tickets this year.
Here are my takes on the game:
o  Swain makes some mistakes, but it is usually from her effort to get to the basket.  My co-favorite player because she has so many skills.  Looked like our best player to me today.
o  Tuhy was a surprise to me.  She made a three-pointer to end a quarter, taken about 10 feet behind the half court line.  One hand.  Swish!  She only scored those three points.  But she was an outstanding rebounder, a good defender, able to pass and fun to watch.  My new co-favorite, at least for now.  She looked like a very intelligent player.
o  Shay shot really well.  If that keeps up, she certainly deserves to start.  Always fun to watch her defense.
o  Eshmeyer was good offensively and defensively as expected.
o  Sotelo Miguez looked up and down, but mostly up.   Some nice hustle layups off some good feeds.
o  Looked like our problem will be a big drop off from the bench rotation (de Vries, Ezieke, Umeh, maybe Gilliard).  That will likely show up more and more as we play better teams.  Ngenda just played the last few minutes, but seemed to be able to dribble with her head up, pass and shoot a bit.  I didn't notice her on defense one way or the other, though.  Would like to see more of her to see if she can be third point guard.

I'd be interested to see some posts from anyone else who saw this exhibition game today.

Shay, Ines and 'downtown' Charlotte (with her basket from well past half court) impressed me.  Shay has significantly improved her offensive game and remains feisty on defense.  Ines can drive to the hoop and hit the mid-range jumper.  She and Haillie are the only players who can create their own shot.  Charlotte is slow, not terribly athletic, and a short 6'1, but she is likely the best rebounder on the team.  She has great positioning and can wrestle the ball from taller players. Very physical down low.  She is not terribly developed offensively at this point.

I was disappointed in Alex.  Coach Paye called Alex and Hailee future All Americans, but today I saw basically the same player that she was as a freshman.  Offensively, her instincts are good, but she makes the mistake of positioning herself in the low block when the guards and wings are rotating the ball on the perimeter and not looking for her.  Like last season, Alex finally gets the ball when she steps outside and by then she's out of position to do much.  I have no idea what the coaches are telling her, but I recall Paye telling the media that she was going to give the players more freedom on offense.  I wish the coaches would teach Alex to move aggressively from one block to the other side so she will be in better position to get more passes from her teammates.  With her length and skillsets, Alex should be a low block player who occasionally steps out and shoots the 3, but she plays the reverse.  She should be averaging at least 15-17 points a game.  I put a lot of blame on Paye.

Haille was good, but not dominant against an overmatched Pacific team.

My biggest disappointment was Ilse de Vries.  I can't understand why Kentucky's Kenny Brooks wanted her so badly.  She did not score or really attempt to score.  She just seemed to look out of place especially on offense.

Free of injuries, I was hoping to see a strong, athletic Kennedy Umeh, but she looked slow and not very explosive in the paint.  When she got the ball, she hesitated before going up and she got blocked several times.

Team-wise, the offense looks very much the same.  Lots of passing around the perimeter and players standing.  This team, for whatever reason, is not dedicated to going inside (similar to last season); not taking advantage of Eschmeyer's size and length.  That alone, is my biggest take-away and my biggest disappointment.

One exhibition game does not reflect a season, but if the offensive trend continues, it's quite possible that a projected 13th. place finish in the ACC might be a bit generous.

RE: WBB 2026-2027 season - Card10Fan - 10-24-2026

So we are running essentially the exact same offense as the past 2 years?
We really have had no team identity the past few years - something to hang our hats on that we do exceptionally well (force turnovers, rebound, score, defend well, etc). Good teams have identities.

We always hear the same talking points from the coaches early on, "we want to play fast and get up and down. a fun style of basketball."
I wish we would just toss our offense of years past in the trash and start over.

RE: WBB 2026-2027 season - crackpot - 10-24-2026

I agree with everything said re: today's game so far.

I had to remind myself that Kennedy is, experience-wise, a freshman. She definitely got much more comfortable as the game went on and it reminded me of the potential we saw from her before injuries hit. I'm looking forward to seeing her develop into a great player.

I agree.  Too early to tell to be sure, but I did not see anything to lead me to believe we are a tournament team.  Having said that, Shay’s ability to hit the three is important. She will, have to be guarded on the perimeter and that prevents a total defensive sag to the middle.

Again, first game is just that. Hope remains . First look suggests we are a lot less talented than last year .if that proves to be the case, it will seem like a long season but one that will end without a trip to the tournament .

Sad to say it (because I was hoping for so much more), but YES- virtually the same offense.  As one indicator, Eschmeyer only took 5 shots (3/5) because there is very little attempt to establish an inside game.

Stanford is still playing 'East-West' rather than 'North-South' and there is only token screening when the ball is rotating around the perimeter.
