I'm a singer but my first love was baseball, and out of high school I was offered to sign with the Phillies (I played CF and hit .464 my senior year in HS), but then I got drafted into the Army. After getting out of the service I changed my name and a couple years later I had the #1 record on the BillBoard charts.
Who am I?

I remembered from a different trivia contest a year or two ago. But I did think Conway Twitty played in the minors.
