I was talking to Longstreet around a campfire. “Let’s drug the Old Man and he’ll wake up and forget all about the charge.”

Nice. . . .

Jim Hadnot was one of the great Bay Area basketball players at Mack. He played one year for the Oakland Oaks.

The regiment was known as the Black Hats. I Corps was commanded by John Reynolds who was called the best Union soldier by Michael Shara. Reynolds was killed by a sniper almost as soon as his corps took the field after John Buford's cavalry division took on the Heath Division and held the ground on Missionary Ridge. Doubleday reorganized the Corps on its retreat through the town and the taking of high ground on Cemetery Ridge. He was relieved by Army Commander George Meade. John Newton took his place as Corps commander.

Winfield Scott Hancock commanded Second Corps and was instrumental in the defense of the center of the Union line. He was severely wounded but soon returned to the army.
