Gates is indeed an amazing stat... grad student.

I see what you did there.

RE: Women’s volleyball wins the National Championship - ColoradoTree - 12-23-2019

A couple of things I've been pondering:

1. Losing Plummer/Gray/Hentz/Fitzmorris (not to mention Gates) would leave a cavernous hole at most programs, and indeed, we'll miss them terribly.
2. Somehow, someway, we'll still be really, really good next year and probably be in the mix come this time next year.

The senior class that just left certainly lived up to its #1 recruiting ranking. Next year's seniors were the #10 class in 2017 (McClure, Formico, and Wilson, as well as Blake Sharp, who I believe left indoor to focus on beach). Next year's juniors weren't in the top 10 due to the small class size (just two players, albeit contributors in Campbell and Fidelak). And next year's sophomores were, of course, last year's #1 class, a monster recruiting haul of three top 5 players, another top 10 player, with the 5th player being the 2018 high school player of the year.

Does anyone have a sense of how next year's class might be stacking up? Six scholarships is a lot to replace (if that's what the number is--I don't have a good handle on which players aren't on scholarship on the roster, but it's at least 5 between Plummer, Gray, Hentz, Fitzmorris, and Gates), and yet players may be hesitant to come here a year behind what could be another epic class, realizing that playing time will be at a premium. I don't think we signed anybody in the fall signing period, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

(WVB is a 12-scholarship headcount sport, right? So, assuming the 5 seniors who played a ton this year are all on scholarship (Plummer/Gray/Hentz/Fitzmorris, plus Gates) and the 5 in last year's #1 class are, too (Kipp, Baird, Berty, Vicini, and Xu), that leaves just two scholarships for the rest of the team, right? A team that includes three more former VolleyballMag.com Fab 50 recruits (Holly Campbell, Meghan McClure, Mackenzie Fidelak). Anyone know the current scholarship math for women's volleyball?)

Thanks CT.  Per volleyball, we are apparently favorites for two whales this cycle, but I know little about them.

One other thought about the classes of 2017/2018. In addition to being behind the monster 2016 class where playing time might be an issue, there’s the fact that they happened during a coaching transition.

We are replacing 4 scholarship players among the 6 we lose. C Keefe and Gates not on scholarship.

Next year we bring in 2 outstanding middles and an outstanding Libero.

Plus a walk-in setter and DS

2021 we are the favorite for a top setter and top front row player. Both could be top 10 players

M Keefe returns for a 5th year so 12 on scholarship

Kipp will be outstanding.

Gates isn't on scholarship?? How is that even possible? She's paying her own way? That's madness.

The team didn't have an unused scholarship open for her. She graduated from UCLA in three years, applied to grad schools as a regular student, got admitted, and only then contacted Hambly about joining the team. But even if it had been planned earlier, there wouldn't have been an extra one. Volleyball has 12 scholarships, and there were already 16 players on the roster before Gates joined.

2021 possibles and many think far more than just possible

Kami Miner 6-0 Setter
Sam Francis 6-3 Pin Hitter.

If you loved Baby Jordan at USC you'll love his daughter.

A reminder that this was the class that came in:

https://gostanford.com/news/2019/4/29/womens-volleyball-six-to-join-cardinal.aspx

For next year, I've heard that the incoming libero, Elena Oglivie is supposed to be really good.

I assume the 2021 setter of whom Bob speaks is Kami Miner.  I'm not sure who the OH is.
I think we are also in the mix for a 2021 middle blocker out of San Diego (Sami Francis).

Kami and Sami were the two names I was thinking about earlier.

LOL, you beat me to it.  I thought Sami was a MB, though.  Glad we were otherwise on the same page.

By the way, if you thought Jenna Gray was opportunistic with her attacks, we'll be in for a treat with Miner.  I've heard her described as a setter with an outside hitter's swing.

I’m not sure if Francis college position. So let’s say front row

Then for some trivia
2022 the daughter of the Raider OC
The daughter of parents with already three athletes at Stanford

Thanks, Bob.  Always a step ahead of me, lol.  I guess with Selina Xu on the team, and possibly Miner in 2021, there may not have been room for another setter, though of course Miner is not a sure thing.

BTW, not sure what the insider knowledge is, but still,  this post is confident in predicting Miner to Stanford:

Miner visited mid November and has posted photos of herself in Stanford gear.

Also, as others have mentioned, at this point in the process, if someone wanted to go somewhere other than Stanford, they could have committed by now; the lack of a verbal commitment means they are likely waiting on admissions.
