Stratford is no longer enrolled at Stanford. https://profiles.stanford.edu/randolph-stratford?releaseVersion=7.18.0

RE: 5th Year Decision Thread - Phogge - 02-01-2020

Doesn't jones have to count given that he is (still?) playing baseball?

Hasn't everything been said again and again. Why not cool it until we see who shows up for spring ball unless we have the Invisible Man sign on Wednesday.

Hmmm. Wow.

RE: 5th Year Decision Thread - OutsiderFan - 02-01-2020

So the scholarship count now is 84 without Stratford after all.

Now at least one portal guy can return even without Butler or Parson departing.

RE: 5th Year Decision Thread - PVTree - 02-01-2020

In case it is not known, Jet Toner is/wants to come back for his 5th year.

I will be very happy if I see him kick again.  That was a brutal injury.

If Stratford is still included, everyone in the 2020 class included, and nobody in the portal included, Stanford is at 85 scholarships.

The only final year guys it really doesn't make sense to bring back for a 5th year are Butler and Parson. There is no need for 11 CBs and 9 Safeties. Better roster balance would subtract these two and replace them with Swann and Williams.

Stanford will have a pretty deep 2020 team if these guys return as the logic seems to dictate.

Succinct and well-put, OF. Thanks for this. Also of note, assuming the roster stays pat as is (i.e. counting Parson), we'll have 5 walk-ons-turned-scholarships on the team, but that includes starting P Ryan Sanborn so it's really more like 4. 80-81 bonafide scholarship players is MUCH, MUCH better than we've done recently. Of course the class balance is still a little whack (skews young), but that's a separate concern and of course bodes well for the future.

As Bob said, we can't "not ask Stratford back" yet as he'll be a junior. We ought to count him as a member of the team until he isn't.

Though I don't see Swann or Williams returning (not based on any inside information beyond gut feel), I also agree with your hypothetical in terms of balancing the roster. That's why staff is going after 3+ DL in the '21 class (but really should've done so in '20...2 is treading water, but it should've been 3).

Overall, the roster balance actually seems quite close to ideal. To me, your 2 DB --> 2 DL conversion, swapping a WR for a QB, and swapping a FB for another OL (counting Stratford that would make 15, i.e. 3 deep) would fully balance the roster in terms of sheer position numbers.

Yeah, having 84 or 85 guys on scholarship is much better than we have had, but we should really be aiming for one or two of those guys to be former walk-one, not four or five.  And yeah, the lack of defensive linemen is an ongoing issue.  To be fair, this is generally a tough nut for Stanford to crack, as admissible defensive linemen are not exactly plentiful.  But I really wish that adequate depth didn’t depend on redshirt seniors coming back.  Hope the class of 2021 is as bountiful as you project.

I never did understand why we wanted to move Fox to OLB.

IMO the distinction here should be if said former walk-ons are legitimate contributors (Brycen Tremayne caught 3 TDs, returned a blocked punt for a TD, and played a ton of STs for example...so he may as well be a scholarship WR), or if they just earned a scholarship due to other reasons/lack of other options (not gonna name names but you get the point).

Fox came in at 6'4" 240. I don't think it felt realistic for him to add 45 pounds. Plus he already showed flashes of being able to effectively rush the passer off the edge, which was (and still is) sorely needed on this defense.

Note that he's now listed at 252, which is a near-ideal weight for an OLB in a nickel-base defense. The NFL "EDGE" position is full of guys weighing anywhere from 250-265.

Back to the topic, Eboh has a CB to UCLA.

RE: 5th Year Decision Thread - BostonCard - 02-02-2020

Bigins had already predicted eboh to UCLA; Huffman joined him, though I feel those two are highly correlated (but also pretty accurate).

Donald Stewart to Wake Forest. They need WRs and it’s a good school on his home coast. Another good choice.

RE: 5th Year Decision Thread - winflop - 02-05-2020

I think there are six guys left who haven't made a decision:
- Swann
- Williams
- Trinh
- Eboh
- Speights
- Richardson

Among those, I only see Swann & Williams having a material impact on next season.

Agreed, though if by some miracle Speights returns AND displays the skills he showcased on his high school tape, then he would have a material impact. I was feeling confident that he would be a star at Stanford. I guess he never really had to learn how to read his blocks in high school.

He's a tough SOB, good ST player, very good pass blocker, and above all a fantastic teammate. Runs downhill well but isn't that patient behind his blocks and doesn't really have the wiggle. I can see him starting/getting more PT at a RB-needy program or a G5, somewhere that runs more of an old-school smashmouth offense (i.e. doesn't throw to their RBs much). UVA just lost 2 RBs to the portal and Wake loses their senior starting RB, so those could be attractive, or if he wants to be closer to home in TX there's always Bloomgren, SMU, UTEP/UTSA, and possibly Texas Tech.

Eboh has 2 recent CBs to UCLA, and most of the CBs have been accurate. Williams has a very very old CB (a month and a half ago, shortly after he entered the portal) to SMU.

I think we're also waiting to see if a couple guys are asked back for their 5th years as well, though that's more relevant to "2020 personnel" than "5th year decisions" (i.e. grad transfers) I suppose.

On the other hand, he is an excellent pass blocker. Unfortunately, every sentient being in the stadium knew it was a pass play when he came in.

RE: 5th Year Decision Thread - CompSci87 - 02-05-2020

What's a CB in this context? Obviously not "cornerback".

247sports has a "Crystal Ball" where experts predict where someone will end up.

I haven't seen any optimism concerning Swann or Williams around here all winter. As time goes by and the portal list shrinks, is it okay to have at least a sliver of hope? I don't want to jinx it...

RE: 5th Year Decision Thread - Langdude - 02-05-2020

We need four scholarship spots. With, I'm guessing, Treyjohn Butler and J.J. Parson moving on (I have no inside information on that), that would mean that we would only need two of those in the portal to transfer (not counting Anthony Trinh, who is a walk-on), and only one if Dorian Maddox moved on as well (I think of Dorian Maddox is a contributor, however). But it may be that two or three are in the portal because they were not going to be coming back for a fifth year anyway.

Personally I think all the portal guys aren't returning. Speights and Eboh are both gone for sure. Not as sure on Williams and Swann but my gut feel is not good.
